Oh no. It’s a new version of a well-established product that trades efficiency for convenience. But this time, it’s more than just being cool. It’s about cooling.
Seriously, either we need to get more awareness of how dumb single-hose portable A/C units are, or we need to just use window units whenever possible. While I know that there are times a portable unit is the only option (remember, I’m in that boat), it seems that only very high capacity, premium machines have the facility to use two hoses. Which is frankly stupid but then again that’s what I’m trying to tell you now.
How about some links? Ya link links? I’ve gathered some for you:

A diy project could be to make an enclosure with two compartments for the condenser on a standard ac. It might even be made from cardbooard. Put two hoses, a window adaptor, a good fan, voila. The intake for fresh outside cooling air would go to a compartment for the ac side and top vents, while the warm air exhaust would come from the fins. I think it might also be made with a plastic tarp, but the fan would need to be on the intake side in that case. If its a rigid box the fan could be on either side. I keep mentioning a fan since i dont know if the internal fan would orovide sufficient air flow by itself.

6:29 Does the power outlet on the rear of the AC work? Or are they just holes faking to be a power outlet?

I can't believe they don't make the exhaust hosing that comes with the unit out of a material that insulates heat better. What the heck! It's almost like they don't want these units to work off of the shelf.

Portable units work great for grid down after natural disaster events like a hurricane when a generator is the only source of electric as well as a temporary camping situation. Try 3 weeks without one in south Florida during the summer after a hurricane. For normal day-to-day use the only way to go is a central unit, at least it is here in Florida. Just my two cents.

I live in a small room with windows that slide open sideways instead of up and down. Until they make units taht fit in those welp portables you're stuck with. Edit: PS: My portable airconditioner helps to me sleep. It noise drones out everyone including dogs so I don't get startled a awake. XD

That's why i ducktaped the hose at the front cold air output and put the device outside on the balcony and let it blow cold air through the hose inside. And opened the condense water release permanently just let it leak on the balkony and a power-cord extender which runs together with the hose, so i can just turn power on or off from the inside. This gave me some sleep.

They do not blow cool air outside... just try and feel it and you will see. https://youtu.be/_-mBeYC2KGc?t=380 Try to phrase that part more clearly. These really are just for short term emergency use.

Single hose is great for flushing out air in basement apartments. Open one window for air intake, turn on AC on other side of basement (on a nice day) and flush all that humid air OUT.

Thank U for doing this because I have been looking for a unit for my short bus. I was tossed between a 8k portable and a 5k window. I was already worried about the 8k needing to much generator power but now knowing how inefficient they are i will build a case to go on the window unit. ☮️❤️🤗

They might work a bit better if you combine the portable AC with a ceiling fan that keeps pushing warmer air down to floor level where it gets sucked out by the AC?

You need what's called a CASEMENT MODEL A/C.. They used to be common, look on the web to see if anyone's selling them now. Even a clean 'vintage' unit would serve your purpose. Cheers!

I don’t understand the energy part, because I had a floor unit one time a portable one and it kept me cool. However, every night I would wake up because it would cut off automatically because it had a water tank, when the water tank got full I had to take it out of the unit and empty it out into the sink. For that reason I don’t like them, and also they do take up floorspace.

I tried extending the hose once on my portable A/C. Eventually, the hamster-wheel for the outgoing air gave way as its outer ring support on the far side of the fins detached. I suspect it was due to its inability to expel heat exhaust as efficiently. The plastic must have gotten way too hot. That's when I found out how much a pain it was to repair. BTW: For hose insulation, towels and binder clips work like a charm! And if you live in an apartment, try to get the outer hallway air (usually cooler) as your replenished air by sealing off cracks in windows.

Excellent!! But one more thing that makes portable AC worse.. they are three times more expensive! So not only does it cost you more to use it, for much less effective much less efficient cooling, you pay three times more for the damn thing! Then there is the noise on top of it all. I had one years ago. A fridgidaire. It was a big hassle to use and not only did you have that hot hose to vent outside you had to constantly drain out the water that would collect in the bottom of the machine by either a garden hose or the small rubber tube that required the pump to run. That eventually died so i had to use the garden hose by gravity run out of the back door which had to be open thus creating one more gap for hot outside air to enter. With one window unit i could cool a whole room and use fans to circulate the air from that cooler room through the rest of the house. Portable a/c is such an extravagant waste of money. I have a hard time believing someone can’t come up with a better design that not only has an efficient heat exchanger but doesn’t add heat or noise back into the living space. For what they charge for those things ( who’s only benefit is portability) they should be a better choice for cooling not just what you’re stuck with if you have no good windows to hang a unit out of. There’s my portable AC rant for the year.
