Pixel 6 Review: the only smartphone you should buy

Abaddan
Abaddan

The pixel 6 is the only phone I've had that still keeps me gushing over it months after owning it. I've had it since as early as I could get one, about a week or so after launch. My only gripe is the fingerprint sensor but it's by no means a deal breaker. Absolutely love the pixel 6,it's really untouchable for the price.

I have the LG V60 and the fingerprint scanner on that always take a second or two. Never found it to be a big deal. And also it never had face unlock so switching to the Pixel 6 would not be a big deal

@lifulo My current phone, the S21 has both facial recognition and an in-screen fingerprint scanner, but I dislike facial recognition so much that I just deal with the fingerprint scanner. Facial recognition just takes to long, while a fingerprint scanner, even a sub-par one, can unlock a phone without even having to touch a button.

@Daniel DeVito if the fingerprint scanner sucks that much then we really need face recognition

Vor 2 Monate

@JLAW BROSKI The ONLY time I ever used facial recognition was with the very first phone I ever owned that had it. However, the novelty wore off almost immediately and I stopped using it and have been using fingerprints since.

I'm an Apple user these days but I picked up the Pixel 6 because it interested me. I've never had a Pixel before having used Sammy in my Android days. This is a really sweet phone! The quality of the build for the price is fantastic. It's smooth and quite good. The cameras are nice as well. I think people expect too much these days. For this price, these cameras are pretty nice and the OS works much better since the January update. I didn't experience any glitches before it, other than the fingerprint sensor not being that great and the occasional app freeze. Both have improved since the update. If I were to switch back to Android, this is the phone I'd use.

@Benjamin Jagun I'd say Pixel 7 Pro. I'm honestly considering getting a de-Googled phone next. I'm starting to hate Google's data capture, the recording audio a d everything you do. My 4a was uploading 12MBps of data to Google even when I had screen black doing basically nothing. And the fact they own 86% of the world search market and censor millions of URLs because something they said or had In them didn't adher to their values is disgusting to me. They also do the same as YouTube and control the feed which manipulates public opinion. What I'm stating is based off Google documents talking about their company values and how they can steer the public into their beliefs and values without them even knowing. It made me sick reading it. Several executives have left Google because of it.

I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max and a Samsung S20 FE and I’m getting the Pixel 6 tomorrow which will be my second Pixel phone (had a 2 XL and loved it), I’m even tempted to get the Pixel 7 next year when my other contract is due an upgrade but it’s out of the iPhone 14 Pro Max and the Pixel 7 though.

@Vicariously Famous There are times that I miss Android, but I completely switched over to Apple the last few years. After my last Windows machine crashed, I bought a Mac. Been happy since. Now all my stuff is Apple. The phone was the last. It seems my entire extended family uses iPhones and I was the last convert! LOL I also like that iPhones get iOS updates for 5-6 years. Looks like we have the same story only in reverse! Too funny, man! I like my Airpods Pro. They sound pretty good. I also use Anker soundcore liberty 3 pro's. They are pretty sweet!

I returned my P6 Pro after a week because of its curved screen. I just couldn't get used to it. The P6, on the other hand, is a delight to use. The January update seems to have improved the fingerprint scanner performance, which was disappointing at first. I still prefer the scanner on the back, like my 3XL. For now, however, I'm perfectly content with my P6. Nice review, mate!!

I am buying this as it's a phone series I always loved and I didn't want to import it and the previous versions weren't present in India. Plus, it's finally with my own money, so :) I wouldn't mind spending this much, just because I am a fanboy. Otherwise na, I was only gonna buy something for around 200$, 300 max, a Xiaomi prolly

@Robertas Mazuras we all have our preferences. I've tried iphones and it's just not for me. I don't like their iOS and absolutely hate the notch. However majority of the smartphone users are Android phones. But I don't really get the remark of buying new Chinese brand new phone. Iphones are made in China just like android.almost all smartphones are made in China due to cheaper labor and materials. Samsung is Korean and makes the screens for iphones and Android. Only thing apple has in the u.s. is the headquarters in California. So the Chinese remark is pretty senseless since the iPhone your typing on is made from China as well.

I've owned a lot of phones. My favorite used to be the Nexus 6P. That is, until I got my Pixel 6. The price is incredible for what you get, the phone while bigger than any other phone I've ever used I've gotten used to, i flatly hate curved screens so this flat screen is perfect, performance is fantastic, and the battery life does very well. Seriously have not been this happy with a phone in years.

I own this for a week now. All bugs are gone with the update and it's silky smooth even I always switch off 90Hz. Android 12 itself is buttery smooth and you feel no difference switching to 60hz (to save battery). At first I doubted their true skin color detection to be real but it is. I checked it side by side with iphone 13 pro max and found Pixel 6 really has a much better reproduction of skin color and handling highlights in the photos. I also compared it with Oneplus 10 pro (trial 30 days offer) where the camera overexposed lights when using front camera portrait mode...Pixel is indeed lovely in every aspects...

I spent quite some time deciding between the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, the Realme GT 2 Pro and a Samsung. I chose the Pixel 6 since the curved glass on the Pro is a no-go for me. The Samsung was too expensive, since the only one with a camera that can compete with the Pixel is the S22 Ultra, and that is twice the price of the 6. The Realme was really tempting because it has a nice design and top-level specs, but the camera and uncertain Software Support made me hesitate to buy one. Also...I have grown to love the extra Software Features the Pixel offers, like the background music identification...

I'm facing the same dilemma. I currently own a OnePlus 6T McLaren. It's been great, but is now over 3 years old and I'm looking for a replacement. I won't buy Samsung because of prior experience, so it's probably going to be Pixel. However, I'm probably going to wait for the U.S. release of the OnePlus 10 Pro and see what the real world reviews are of the software. Currently, my OnePlus has the cleanest Android, other than Google Pixel. No bloatware and, like you said, their charging speeds blow anything else out of the water. On my 3+ year old OnePlus I still get good battery life, 50% charge in about 10 minutes, and full 100% in 30. I'm mostly looking at a new phone for a better camera. It's the one area where OnePlus has traditionally come up short. However, they seem to be very competitive with the other top brands now.

I bought mine a couple of days ago to replace my 2 year old Pixel 3a. The 3a was fine but the RAM was too low and apps auto-closed which was annoying. The Pixel 6 solves this. Everything about the 6 is better apart from the fingerprint reader. I knew it was going to be bad and it is. It's slow and doesn't seem to recognise my thumb no matter what I do. I have increased the sensitivity in the display settings which helped somewhat. The rear mounted reader was a winner on previous models or even a power button reader as on a lot of Xiaomi's. Still, I got it at a knock down price and am very happy. Slippy as hell though - get a case!

@eamonob84 I don't think there is much difference but I'm not particularly sensitive to phone size. It fits in my pocket and it 'feels' more like the 3a in my pocket than a Xiaomi Poco x3 which I use as a second device. That's more to do with the weight though as the x3 is 200g+

This was a great accurate review. I have the pro cuz I'm old and blind. My only complaint is the selfie camera. I rarely do selfies but it should work for the situations I do need them to as I need it for work. The charging for me has improved with update but if you read further, it's the AI working for you. The back video was a bit grainy in certain lighting situations but also improved. I wish there was a HDR turn off for photos because SOMETIMES it's a bit much. Otherwise I love this phone. I just hate Google Photos organization lol.

I have had the Palm Pre, Blackberry 10, Samsung and all Pixel devices including the most recent Pixel 6. I literally switched to the iPhone 13 recently for two reasons. Connectivity and Bluetooth connection. I've always had some type of carrier disconnection with Pixel and put up with it but recent the 6 was too much. Bluetooth was the same here and there disconnect especially with AA. I took a chance into the Apple ecosystem and I have to be brutally honest that the connection situation is way better than Android for me. I love the Google ecosystem and have Google devices at home but man Car-play plays great in my car and connects great with my Sync system (Ford/Lincoln). Sync would drop connection with Android and recently the carrier connection issues with T-Mobile. I'm keeping my iPhone for this alone though I have a Pixel 4a as a back up just in case.

I was thinking which one to buy. The Pro was to expensive for me and it's not worth that almost 300€ price difference(here in Germany) to the regular 6 for the minor differences in terms of display and camera. Would it has been less of a price difference between these two, I propably would have gone for the Pro. I've chosen the Normal 6 and what I have also to mention is that I'm coming from a 8T and sometimes I'm still missing it, especially in terms of charging speed and it had the better display quality and 120Hz. What I can say for now is that I'm not really that satisfied with my Pixel 6, I'm facing some software issues since its launch and they can't fix it. Beside that it's a great device and it gives you that buttery smooth stock Android Pixel experience. Let's see if they can fix it with future updates. If they can't fix it, I will go back to OnePlus.

I switched my mind and bought a 6 Pro. I was waiting after the price was dropping for almost 100 Euros. I was sick of the Pixel 6, because I have only problems with it, especially the display was the worst one, I've ever experienced on a smartphone. After I made my experience with the Pro, I can really said that it is worth the price difference. Great display(could be a little bit more brighter), better haptics and so on.

I mean I'm still on my Pixel 3xl, which I bought a year after it came out (used, mind you), so I skipped the 4 and 5 already. I also wanted that telephoto lens "just in case" because I have a DSLR camera, and always wanted a telephoto lens, but that price STARTS at $700, JUST FOR A LENS. Unfortunate that everything i see in these reviews from laptops to phones they're ALWAYS more expensive here in Europe. (In the Netherlands the pixel 6 costs $870 worth of euros while the pixel 6 pro costs $1225 for the 128gb model and $1460 for the 256gb model)

My Pixel 3XL has 4gb of ram and it runs smooth, the software is done well. Only thing is the amount of apps that can run in the background (actively), such as FB refreshing when you leave the app and come back.

I hear ya man. I've been with Samsung since the S6 but after I finish paying off my S20 in a couple of months I'm leaving. They charged $999 on release for the standard model and I was having major battery drain issues after a few weeks among other things. Then a year later when they released the S21 standard for $200 cheaper and also with a slightly bigger battery I was pissed off.

Honestly if this was 5 years ago the spec sheet on a phone would bother me, I've just got the 6 this week, I like how simple it is, I like how it doesn't quite look like a Samsung or a iphone, I like how it feels like a quality product for £599, my only issues is it feels super slippy to hold, I definitely recommend a case on this device, but you can't buy an all round better phone for it's price point

what your take on the mobile network standby draining the battery? Is it gonna be fixed in the next update? My system usage with it is between 35-50% over 24hrs, and it's been a bit of a problem. Not even using 5g, and turning off data whilst i'm on wifi.

I love your reviews. It's something in the voice that makes it seem relaxing and not pressuring anyone into buying anything. Good style! That being said I'm torn between the pixel 6 and the s21fe (considering they're at the same price right now). Which would you pick? I'd love to have the pixel camera but worried about the rest of the device longer-term. Thanks!

Google are often great when it come to photography and they listen to common sense rather than what folk that may not know how optics and photography work, like a wide angle lens is often rather soft on the sides and thore lenses can also create other optical artifacts that lower the image quality.

Such a shame that all of you seem to have a problem with curved edges when a phone with curved edges just looks better and if you use a case there's no problems with accidental touches and if you're spending $800 on a phone don't you want to protect it in a case? Seems like common sense to me but hey it's just my humble opinion. I don't particularly like flat screens and yes it does have a decent refresh rate if they didn't have any glitches going on with apps and whatnot and that may have something to do with quirks and the tensor chip where what Google added to Samsung's chip just doesn't speak well in communicate well between the two chipsets there's the Google half of the Chip and there's the Samsung half and maybe they just don't speak well to each other

The design jump is very weird. I consider the Pixel 5 to be the *"Peak"* Pixel Design on the display part. The curved corners and the flat display with the thin and evenly sized bezels that goes around the screen was *"Muwah!"* It was futuristic and had alot of character. Characters that the Galaxy S22 and S22 plus took. One of the best things that made the Pixel 5's screen look way too good to be true was the camera hole being placed at the corner of the screen making it less obtrusive. I found the center placed hole camera to be worse than a notch due to it being a hole in the middle of the screen, blocking content that should be visible. Unlike a notch where you just don't see it, the hole in the middle is just way too much because of the highlight that goes around it when playing games, watching content on landscape, etc.

I switched from a cheap Chinese phone (nice in that I could carry two batteries) to a Pixel 3 (great camera and real Android) then last autumn to a Pixel 6. I jumped into that early because in the UK you got a free pair of Bose SC 700 headphones thrown in if you pre-ordered it. It was clearly an excellent phone from the start but it had issues which for some reason you could forgive. Google has fixed most of the software problems by now and partly fixed hardware ones in software. The fingerprint reader is still a bit problematic until you work out which part of your thumb to use. I also find the orientation detector takes time to settle down which makes using Star Walk slower. It's still a great phone which I really enjoy using.

I made the same step like you, going from a 8T to the Pixel 6. Mine have still some bugs in terms of software and the only things I'm missing from my 8T is the overall better display quality with the 120Hz and the 65W charging. Once you've experienced that, you don't want to experience something different than that. You have to get used to that slow charging from the Pixel. But overall it's a good device. But if they won't fix it with software updates in the future I will go back the OP8T. Good luck with yours.

@Tony Talks it's been a bit of a frustrating experience overall. In addition to the bugs, I traded in my pixel 4a 5G with a perfect screen and was supposed to receive $165 in credit. They said the screen had damage (not true) and only refunded $100. If I were to buy again, I'd probably go with the pixel 5.

@1221Ralph they need to be careful who they do business with. I'd write Google directly and show them the evidence of other people having similar experiences and maybe they'll do something about it. @1221Ralph that's strange that that would happen. I've only had good experiences with Google. Hopefully the screen didn't crack in route in the mail but you probably packed it really well. It only takes one bad Apple. It was possible it's just one individual that made that decision.

@Grafyxx i would suggest staying away from OnePlus if you are looking for clean experience since it's basically an Oppo phone now. Even the OnePlus 10 Pro launched in China straight up says Color OS on the first boot. If you like OPPO and their awesome record of breaking promises, OnePlus may be a good idea. But if not, i would suggest to avoid it. Having owned 4 OnePlus devices, I had always liked it's clean and smooth experience. But it's gone down the drain since OP7 Pro.
