The wheel actually landed a few neighborhoods away from me, bounced off someone's house and landed in their back yard. Luckily nobody was injured, and the damage to the building wasnt too bad.

so in auto racing we sometimes say "go drive the wheels off" -- but "fly the wheels off" is taking it to another level

They were lucky it was a small plane - photos indicate it was likely close to a car tire, certainly not bigger than a truck tire.

Chicago controllers are the best in the country. I've been in Chicago when they've had to send every airplane on approach around, had a dog running around on 22L, had an aircraft disabled holding short of 28R/N5 blocking half of their departures and all other kinds of nonsense. They never buckle under the pressure and they always keep everyone on frequency informed and calm. Other sectors will rattle off radio calls like they're auctioning off cattle at midnight with two airplanes on frequency.

I just got to work at O'Hare and as I was driving towards the terminals I saw them towing this PC12 with a few escorts. They had the left main on a little cart since the wheel was gone. Neat!

I don't understand how the tire came off,.. is it like a car? could someone just not have tighten it enough? or was there damage from a previous landing ?

@Supersonicf111f 19740186 PC12 doesn’t have a torque spec for the axle nut

Not sure about this aircraft, but when I was in the USAF, my aircraft had safety wire securing the nut to the axle after it was torqued to spec. Seems like someone forgot to torque the axle nut at a minimum.

Cameras... seem like every pilot has 2-4 go pros in the cabin, on the wings.. but no one has them under the aircraft so they can actually SEE if their gear is down and wheels are on. WHY?

Any idea why we can’t hear pilot read backs on the 28c approach freq? I have been having this issue on live atc for weeks.

@Chicago Airport Spotter interesting thank you. It’s weird because it’s worked for me without a hitch for a long time. Ord’s liveatc was totally out for a couple of days but thankfully it was fixed.

I've been hanging out at my local airport during Covid with a short-wave radio really close to an active runway (but technically off the property). My radio only picks up about 2/3 of communications from planes, and many of the missed ones have literally been holding short of the closest runway about 100yds away.

Airplanes' radio antennas, for the most part, are on the underside of the aircraft. The LiveATC receiver/recorders are located in an area not far off from the airport, but blocked by geographic features as well as interference from buildings. I can hear planes fine on my scanner as they are approaching the airport, but once they actually land, I lose them and can only hear the tower because I still have line of sight with the tower.

That's odd, I initially read it as 'Loses a tree'. That would be a strange thing for an aircraft to have.

One engine failure in Texas (pilot stalled short of emergency landing and was badly injured). Now a wheel falls of. Come one Pilatus PC-12 and Boutique Airlines, I had both of you in high esteems.

I think I am going to start driving to Albuquerque. I really loved the Boutique flight from Carlsbad NM to Albuquerque but now I'm getting nervous about it lol

I'm concerned that I have heard a number of issues with this airline of late. Maintenance and practice, plus having seen a few videos of people using them, the aircraft in general don't seem to be well taken care of.

So pleased everything came out well, that could have gone so badly! Last I was aware, wheels on airplanes are made to stay ON! Yikes!!! Great job tower telling him about sparks and stoping them as well as everyone else. I’m sure once they touched down, the pilots said ‘shite, that doesn’t feel right!’

I guess it's a bad sign when you need takeoff power and full rudder to finish your landing rollout.

The dangerous part here is the tire hitting someone. Landing without a tire is not That bad after all. Expensive yes, but not the in the top dangerous things when landing an aircraft.

losing a TIRE is not the same thing as losing a WHEEL, guys

Wheel assembly = tire + wheel And don't call it a rim. That's an incorrect term. Rims are what I shoot basketballs through.

Generally speaking wheels are what a tire is mounted upon... it ain’t rocket appliance.

@wgraham2410 I get that, but it's the Pilatus and 28C combo I didn't get - but I guess it was late in the evening so they may have been down to 1 runway

@VASAviation - Apparently so, I usually get stuck with either 27L or 27R - it's quite rare unless it's the crack of dawn to get 28C

They were all landing 28C until the incident happened

Swiss Air was behind Boutique. They were moved to 27L because Boutique was disabled on the runway. We didn't get him off 28C till well after midnight

Just finished ANA 777, then this came up. Then I realized both were same airport😓

This is why multiple levels of safety procedures exist. Everything worked. No one was hurt or killed. It's not a bad thing that both incidents happened at the same airport, just an unfortunate coincidence, but the system worked.

These radio transmissions are usually received by someone's radio scanner and fed to a site like Live ATC. They could be miles from the airport. So picking up a plane transmission from in the air is no problem. When they are on the ground, obstructions and terrain become a factor.
