Learn the basics of photography in 10 minutes! Obviously, there's much more to photography, but if you can grasp ISO, aperture, and shutter speed, you can take incredible images and be able to troubleshoot when you're not getting incredible images.

That's not really the purpose of the Pareto Principle...it's supposed to mean that 80% of the effect comes from 20% of the cause. For example, 80% of the light put off by stars is made by 20% of the stars. 80% of the books in circulation come from 20% of the authors. etc

Yes your photo editing software and how to use them to completely turn a okay picture to an amazing picture because it's no longer needed to be in an amazing area and right place right time... I really learned a lot from your video. Thank you for being so concise and organized in your presentation.I know nothing about photography and now I feel I have a place to start from. I would love to take a picture of a hummingbird in flight or drinking nectar from a flower at dusk ,when they come out to feed!. How fast would the shutter speed have to be? Would the ISO at dusk be higher and also would the the F. Stop be lower to decrease depth of field or higher?

Vor 10 Tage
David Manning
David Manning

So stoked this video was helpful Catherine! To capture a hummingbird is for sure tricky. To capture a hummingbird at dusk is even trickier! You'll want your shutter speed fast so that you can capture the hummingbird, your aperture fairly wide open, and because you're shooting at dusk, you'll probably need to have your ISO fairly high. Use the chart at the end of this video to guide you, but try starting at 1/500th, f/3.2, ISO 3200 and see if you can catch that little guy. It won't freeze his wings in the photo, but you might get his body frozen with slightly blurred wings👍

AS someone who only shoots film (other then work 'crap' still only shoots film) I really wonder why everyone has a hard time learning Digital--->you have nothing to waste if you make a mistake! (other then time). I mean go out and play. You have three things to worry about, your aperture, your shutter speed and you ISO or as I call it 'film speed'. It's easy peas and to be fare if you make a mistake its sometimes the best thing ever! I'd say 15% of my mistakes end up better then when I'm in complete control. Mistakes can also be were the art lies. P.s If you're interested in learning film get a toy camera, a point n shoot, or a pinhole and go play. Make weird long exposures and use B.W film with colour filters, to play with contrast and tone. Its so fun. I have a roll of SFX200 by Ilford and a dense red filter. It's going to turn Blues into Blacks and Greens into whites. It's so high contrast its almost like shooting with infrared film. Never done it before might hate it. But I'm super excited. That's photography to me being interested in play and learning. F>U>C>K learning via YouTube (No offence David) It's outside in the dirt with your follow human animals that you'll learn the Gold!

Totally Emile, but ISO actually came from the Greek work meaning 'equal'. The organization later took on the letters for their acronym, but that's not where it came from 👍

ISO - Sensitivity to light. - More ISO = more light (but also more grains and noise) - outdoor - ISO100 - Shade - ISO200 - Indoor - ISO400-800 Aperture - Size of opening in the lens. - smaller the number 👉🏼 bigger the hole (more light) - CONTROLS DEPTH OF FIELD. - smaller the f/stop lower the depth of field. - Only one person - low f/stop (f/2) - more person - f/3.5 f/4 etc., - For everything to be in focus (in landscape imgs) go to f/16 or f/20 Shutter speed - Amount of time the shutter is open. - 1/100, 1/250, 1/8000 of a second etc., - slower shutter speed 👉🏼 1", 2", 30" seconds. - CONTROLS MOTION BLUR. - Slow shutter speeds - used when on tripods. - Faster shutter speed used for sports etc. - For portrait - 1/250, 1/500 (ppl look sharp) - slow shutter speed (1/100) Works best for low light situations as well. - SLOW SHUTTER SPEED = MORE MOTION BLUR (More light) - When subject is moving - 1/800 - FASTER SHUTTER SPEED = LESS MOTION BLUR. Setting: 1. Set ISO first based on scene light (ISO100 OR 200 for outdoors) 2. Decide how much depth of field you want (focus only 1 person or focus the next nearby person (2) etc.,) More Aperture = more depth of focus. 3. How much motion blur I want to avoid? 4. You take a TEST shot of the scene and the pic is too DARK . 1. Slow shutter speed down until you don't see a motion blur. 2. Lower Aperture to LET MORE LIGHT until the subject is in focus. 3. Raise your ISO. You take a TEST shot of the scene and the pic is too BRIGHT. 1. Reduce ISO. 2. Raise shuttter speed. 3. VERY LAST, Raise the Aperture (Remember you' ll have larger circle IN FOCUS)

I disliked this video because several things you said are right but wrong. F stop also depends on the distance from the subject. that shot you showed you could easily even go with f1.4 and have background sharp as well as you didn't calculate the distance to F. I have 5 national geographics awards. Your video is very inaccurate also you set your f-stop 1st to determine what DOF you are going to want, Then decide at what shutter speed youd want, THEN the iso. Your video is honestly not good

@David Manning amaizing ..and as of shutter speed dial ,how do i decide about it ? Does low shutter speed means more light? ( but less speed?)

Vor 11 Tage
David Manning
David Manning

NYC street lights are for sure considered 'low light'. You'll need a high ISO (high number) and wide open aperture (low number) to get enough light to capture scenes. It would also be great to have a tripod so that you can use a slower shutter speed. Use that chart at the end👍
