@Cycling Boss Exactly, perfect execution. WVA has been so consistent in the first 4 stages, it’s unbelievable. Although it seemed he wasn’t perfect in the 1st stage (but he still finished 2nd, beating the world champion) This stage does bag the question what others were expecting before that last climb. Riders such as MVDP were completely out of position while this seemed pretty predictable and riders such as he don’t have that many chances this TdF

Vor Monat
Cycling Boss

I love 2-5 minute punchy hills in the last 5-10km of a road bike race. Need more of these stage finishes. That was so fun to see TJV burn through 2 guys in all out efforts to set it all up for WvA. Played perfectly.

Was thinking the exact same. He was probably concentrating so hard in the group to not crash or touch wheels that he didn't notice. And the sprinters couldn't see what the front was up to on that final hill. I think blame the DS for not communicating.

Can we talk about van Aert's consistency? 1st E3, 2nd Paris-Roubaix, 3rd in Liege, two wins, two second places and a sixth place in eight Dauphiné stages, and one win and three second places in the first four Tour stages. And a few of those second places were photo finishes. Absolutely ridiculous.

The team planned this before the day even started. This wasn't WVA all by himself. In fact, it ended up being smart for his teammates to sit back so they could hang out at the head of the chase group and slowing it down as much as possible, helping him remain alone up front--so much so that they fooled Phillipsen into thinking he won, lol.

Vor Monat
Nicholas Loduca

Van Aert was just unbeatable today, so fun to watch. But was anyone else surprised he didn't wait slightly over the top to try and bring Jonas with him. I know he had Yates with him but it looked their there was a gap between them and everyone else so I was surprised they didn't take that chance to get something over Pogacar because I feel like any chance you might have to take time over him, you have to take...might just be me though

Vor Monat

@anonymous Nah, they wouldn't. Even if Jonas joined Wout, Jonas wouldn't have had the energy to either help or hang on.

Vor Monat

If he had tried to bring Jonas with him then Ineos, Bora and UAE would have put in a concerted effort to chase them down - the chances of Jonas getting a GC advantage would have been very small. So it was good tactics for Jumbo to let him go alone since it maximised the chances of a stage win and Roglic and Jonas didn't have to race..

@sandydenny lives He’ll lose the yellow in the mountains obviously. That’s for Roglic and Vingegaard. But you don’t lose the green because of mountain stages. Even in lower Category mountains with sprint points, he’s the best climber amongst the green jersey candidates like Jacobsen, Pedersen and Sagan.

I'd like Van Aert to change his focus to GC contending. I'm fairly convinced he could make it difficult for Pogacar if he lost weight and improved his climbing. Everything else he is already better or on par with Pogi.

Vor Monat
frank burn
frank burn

@Brian Goossens I don’t think Pagacar is that dominant. He got lucky the 1st year and Roglic abandoned last year. Let’s see what he does this year. If he wins , then yes , he’ll be dominant. But we’re not there yet.

Vor Monat
Brian Goossens
Brian Goossens

@K_Verstraete I'm aware but there's many successful examples in the past. Thomas, Wiggins come to mind, although they don't have anyone as dominant as Pogacar to fight against! If I was Wout I'd do it after winning Roubaix and Tour of Flanders as I'm sure he wants to win that first but you can't say he doesn't have serious potential for GC battle. It's up to him and his team in the end!

Vor Monat
K_Verstraete
K_Verstraete

He'd sacrifice his punching and sprinting abilities by focusing on climbing. That's just how our muscles work. It's possible it might still be enough to beat Pogi and all others. But considering his well-trained body now, he'd have to sacrifice a lot to be on par with Pogi in the mountain stages. You can't underestimate the physiological changes by losing 7-8 kgs and changing focus. It's a balance.

Vor Monat
Michael
Michael

@Randal H I agree with all your points. But then thinking out of the box makes it more challenging for other teams to judge. At some point they have to take WvA in yellow serious and wheel him in which might wear UAE down a bit (no easy task if he follows his protege tasks for Roglic and sticks to the leading groups). MvdP was difficult to judge for other teams as well which brought him some days in yellow and some prestigious victories the years before. Team Telekom in the good old days went for green and yellow alike. It merely failed because Ule was too conservative the first year and too careful with lets say silent training partners the years thereafter. Otherwise this double endeavour would have paid out. JV showed in this years Paris-Nizza a similar tactics. And then there are still Tadejs tires on wet...as you said. We will see... At least for us spectators it's a bonus to watch...

Vor Monat
Randal H
Randal H

@Michael We'll have to see I guess. All I know is that I the team of Armstrong never did such a thing, and I don't recall Froome's team doing it either, and both these riders were much more dominant in the tour than Roglic, and they both also had very strong teams. The rider in yellow is always the last back to the hotel, and it takes a toll. Pogacar is so strong, other teams need to be very focused to beat him. Plus, the team leader needs to be protected, and he isn't if his teammate is trying to win the stage. Just my opinion though🙂

Vor Monat

@eSport Highlights no need to gain some seconds. Someone will lose minutes in the mountains. And if it’s still close the last TT will separate them.
