I'm watching your channel for the first time and I'm extremely impressed at the topics alone and the detail you dive into them. Don't take this the wrong way, but they were playing in the background on a smart tv because if I'm not doing 50 things I'm doing no things. This exact thing had me snap away from emails swinging. Unsubscribe, thumbs down, laptop passive aggression. Then I saw this. You're a good guy. I could have just kept this to myself but moderately famous people or not, people like hearing they did genuine good and fair things. Hopefully if for some reason you see this, you're doing good man and somehow keeping it PG only

I want my deuteragonist to do something he thinks is unforgivable so he runs away from his village and is now fine with getting his hands dirty. When a mission goes wrong he’s forced to return home and face his past. Does anyone think learning to forgive yourself is a strong enough theme?

I wonder what you would say about Sasuke's journey and then his redepemtion in the original Naruto series (Naruto + Shippuden without Boruto). I thought things with Sasuke made sense until after the final battle with Naruto. I don't know if that's what people see as the perfect end to Naruto or not, but personally I find it hard to swallow that Sasuke didn't have anything like a trial or a phase where he had to regain his own village's trust before going on his redemption journey. There's also things like Itachi's true mission and the way the elders played a part in it that Sasuke just forgives. Perhaps that forgiveness is a part of his redemption but I could not help but think Naruto ended with loose ends. Don't get me wrong. Naruto is a great anime (a little long but still great) but I felt that Sasuke's redemption could've been better shown than with just him journeying and staying away from the village. Is staying away from the village how he deals with the village playing a role in his clan's demise? I haven't read much of Boruto or watched too much of it either but I'm wonder in just the context of Naruto if Sasuke's redemption was .... for lack of a better word, shown correctly. Could someone explain their own thoughts on his redemption? (Without any anti- or pro- SasuSaku rant unless it's important to your discussion)

I never took Darth Vader's sacrifice as a completed redemption. I always saw it as a sad ending to one man's sad life. Throughout the original trilogy he is portrayed as more machine than man, both literally and in the way he acted cold and detached. His sacrifice in the end was just to show that he was still "human" after all and capable of emotion, not actual redemption. I know the ghostly image of him at the end might counter this in some way but it's still my interpretation.

Now, how about the opposite of a redemption arc? Showing a character falling from grace, to be redeemed? A damnification arc? I feel like we don’t think we see a lot of those (though, I might just not hear many stories). How can I corrupt a character so that I can redeem them?

I disagree that Vader's redemption wasn't compelling in Star Wars. Cause the thing is, Star Wars is a simpler story. Sure, it can be deep and meaningful, but it's also simple and straight forward. A black and white world (at least the 6 movies are). A simple good vs evil. Sure, death alone shouldn't be redemption in many stories, but in Star Wars, it does because it's such a straight forward and simple story. It has a straight forwardness of a fairy tale that influence it. For crying out loud, good guys have blue light sabers and bad guys have red. It's literally that straight forward (Anakin had a blue light saber in revenge of the Sith, but he lost it, symbolizing that he lost his good).

I think the case of Joel in Last of Us is really interesting. SPOILER WARNING. Basically we get introduced to his trauma early on and gain sympathy for him. Then we flash forward to him at his lowest, being a survivalist asshole who has given up on his humanity. Then he meets Ellie which ignites his fatherly side - and his humanity. But at the end of the story he is put in a position where choses between his personal relationship with Ellie and the future of humanity. Micro vs Macro. He choses one child to save instead of creating something that could save thousands, maybe millions and change the future of humanity. Is he a hero? A villain? Is he redeemed or was this the new crime that he needs redemption from? Because people had so very different views of this the sequel has been extremely controversial.

Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has some really great redemption arks that follow this formula especially the main character Rebecca. At the start of the show her stakes are wanting to be loved by someone, her world view is that no one loves her, and her view of self is that she is not worthy of love because there is something wrong with her. This is the reason why she does all of the horrible things she does in order to get Josh to date her, because if he loves her then that would prove to her that those other beliefs are wrong. But of course, over the course of the show that all of this gradually changes.

I feel like Vader's rdemption arc was rather poorly explained... Now he is my favourite character but that's not the reason I'm saying this. Vader has suffered a great deal during his time in the empire and he did face the consequence of his actions albeit as a force ghost. Sidious manipulated him to turn on the jedi and become his apprentice having set his eyes on young Ani during one of the Jedi trainings he was present at. Ani was pushed to the dark side out of fear of losing those close to him. While it's easy to say love is stronger than power (a remark I think u made in a different video), keeping in mind that unlike the readers Ani didn't know Sidious was planting dreams of Padme dying in his mind in order to turn him to the dark side (also keeping in mind that Jedi's dreams do tend to foreshadow some future events), so Sidious offering a way to save her would be an equivalent of someone refusing to take a medicine saying that love will save them from potentially dying (spoiler alert, it won't). Once he was turned he became Sidious's slave, he abused Vader both mentally and physically even going as far as to brand him a traitor for going on a personal mission and spearing a rebel with an uncany resemblance to the love of his life, blatantly admiting he manipulated Vader when confronted with the fact that he lied about Padme's death. We didn't need to see him face the consequence because by the time of his "redemption arc" he felt more like a tragic anti hero (enter clone wars) than a villain. I guess the fact that he is the main character, not Luke, helps with that as well. Furthermore he confronted Leia about his actions and asked her for forgivness once he became a force ghost. While one character isn't much compared to the endless number of his victims, in the short exchange they had u could see he genuinely regretted everything he did under the Emperor's orders. So yeah I think that's it.... otherwise a great video.. I watched ATLA when I was around 10-11ish so I get hyped everytime someone is talking about it in a video. My personal favourite was Zhao (dunno why, I do have a history of liking exclusively villains, which was obviously unintentional, but why Zhao is beyond me, neat character but still, I was pretty bumped when he died tho....). Aslo english is not my native language so I apologise for any mistakes I might have made. Anyone who actually read through all this and came to the end: Thanks and have a long and merry life :-)

You could do this in reverse, a "corruption arc" where a character's trifecta slowly changes for the worse due to a bag influence or a chance in circumstances, culminating in them abandoning something that made them moral or sympathetic

Vor 2 Monate

I'd like to talk about Iroh as a reversal of this trope. He has already completed his redemption arch and his "change", but we only learn this further in. Iroh shows how redemption affects you long term, how it is a continuous choice. About reconciliation and accountability. It mirrors Zuko's arch beautifully. Zuko is just starting his path of redemption, while Iroh has already completed it and shows what Zuko's future could look like. At the same time, Zuko is part of Iroh's reconciliation, his way of trying to do good and to give back. To make up for the mistakes of his past, specifically the son he could not save. This gives both characters more weight and Zuko's arch more impact. It also recontextualizes what we knew about Iroh. It makes the silly old man and all his seemingly whimsical actions much more important, because the viewer comes to see them as a deliberate choice, a rejection of his past self. I feel like this is not as often explored as the journey of change, how redemption affects your life long term, that it requires commitment and lifelong dedication. Pairing these two characters, who are at different points of the same path, is beautifully done.

How can you not mention Zuko when he has one of the best written redemption arcs of all time? When I think of bad redemption arcs, I think of Kipo And The Age Of Wonderbeasts. *SPOILERS* It's an excellent show, but Scarlamagne/Hugo's redemption arc has the exact same problem as Darth Vader. He just dies at the end for no real reason and his redemption didn't really feel earned. He didn't HAVE to die. He just sort of sacrifices himself because the writers wanted to kill him off. I always kind of figured they'd kill him off because his crimes were pretty dang severe for a kids show, but I wish they'd given him more hard decisions instead of just locking him in a cage. Kipo setting him free just magically turns his into a better person, and that's not true to his character. I feel like he had built up too much hatred and resentment for humans to be turned that easily. He had literally just tried to murder EVRYONE by dipping them in molten Gold! Also, why does no one at the beginning of the show ever mention that Kipo is fucking PURPLE? It's explained later, but if I met a purple human in a world where no other purple humans exist, I would automatically assume she was a mute. Benson is just like, "Whatever!"

Riku in the Kingdom Hearts series is I feel a great redemption storyline because we see the fall, the introspection and then the efforts to fix his mistakes. His desire to protect his friends leads him to fall under the dark influence of Maleficent and Ansem, the latter actually possessing him and banishing him to the Realm of Darkness for his ambition. With the help of Mickey in Chain of Memories he begins to fight his regret and self-doubt, beginning his walk on the path to dawn and spends a year striving to restore Sora even at the cost of his physical appearance. Even after he’s purged of Ansem’s influence and appearance at the end of Kingdom Hearts 2 and the good guys are happy to have him back Riku still feels like he’s not worthy and undergoes the Mark of Mastery exam to prove to himself he’s worthy of the Keyblade, and is able to reconcile the darkness and light within him to an unprecedented degree that even the series Big Bad cannot corrupt him anymore.

One redemption arc I like is Soren from Dragon Prince, no surprise that writers on ATLA also worked on that. He works as a foil to series protagonist Callum in regards to paternal relationships (Viren is downright manipulative towards Soren while Harrow genuinely loves Callum even though he is Callum’s stepfather), and while he’s not outright a villain he’s still working with the antagonistic forces of he series, namely his father Viren and his sister Claudia. When he breaks his back and sees the toll that healing it takes on his sister, who is firmly into dark magic by this point, his trust in his family starts to lapse and eventually he breaks off entirely to join the protagonists in defending Zym from the forces his father leads. He has a great conversation with Callum where he confesses to envying the father son relationship Callum had with Harrow, that he wasn’t able to have with Viren, opening up and acknowledging both the cause and the fact he’s developed beyond the yearning, as well as apologising for how he’s acted against the group in the past.

some other redemption arcs: Cecil from Final Fantasy 4. A dark knight pawn, starts questioning the choices of the king, chooses to protect Rydia and start defending people against his former allies. Gets a visual shift when he literally sheds his darkness to become a paladin Hendrick from Dragon Quest 11 (act 2, not act 3 Hendrick - there's a difference). One of the 2 main servants of the king, allows certain evils to be done while not allowing others (believes lies that the hero brings the darkness, does stop the villagers from the hero's home to be spared even though their village was burned down), but when confronted with the fact that his king was under control of the villain and his ally was working for the villain he changes himself, being humbled. He aids the rebellion, protecting citizens and no longer wearing his standard armor but cheap clothes. He begrudgingly works with the hero, eventually overcoming that prejudice as well. Then act 3 undoes that. Or at the least it severely undercuts itself

How could you talk about death in this video without discussing the Red Dead Redemption series? In regards to the second game, SPOILERS Arthur Morgan started off thinking of John Marston as not worth saving, since he abandoned the gang for a year prior to the game. At the end of the game, Arthur gives his last few moments to give John and his family time to escape from the Pinkerton. That perfectly fits the usage of symmetry.

The thing about Vader is that his motivation never changes. His main motivation is to stop people from needlessly dying. As a Jedi, this is by being a Jedi. When he falls it is to save Padme AND end a galaxy-wide civil war by getting rid of the Jedi AND Palpatine. In the original trilogy by working as an enforcer so that the galaxy has peace and order to finally killing the Emperor to save the galaxy from his Tyranny. He goes from Hero > Anti-hero > Villain > Hero whilst his motivation never changes.

Your mention of death by redemption got me thinking of Suzaku in code geass R2. His entire character arc fits kinda beautifully into that concept mostly because he's alive by the end and yet you still feel like death by redemption is relevant because that's how Suzaku thought in the begining. He arguably still thinks that until the very end where he realises being left to LIVE! as a symbol without an identity IS his redemption.

13:35 Yeah I have only seen one failed redemption arc, and I really didn't see the point. The main character was a girl who had severe sadistic tendencies, and as a result attacked her sister several times. She eventually lived alone, and kept to those ways, but was gradually lessening her severity. Eventually she meets someone she loves, and this person helps her to suppress her sadism, and it's the first person she feels bad even having the thought of harming them. However one of her earlier victims decides to take revenge, and first ruined her reputation with the person she cared about, making them fear her. This caused her to become unstable. Next that person set up a camera and told her where her sister was (since for quite some time her younger sister had been impossible for her to find) leading her to attack her full force, and get recorded. This evidence led her to get arrested and thrown in Juvie. Except this is an issue because then she continues to thrive as a sadistic monster. Meanwhile the person who loved her is now back to being a loner, and now believes everything they experienced with her to be a lie. Thats it, that's the end. Was this supposed to be a "Haha, Karma B####" moment? Just a frigging pointless waste of time, and I regret ever reading it.

On in particular that I would like to mention is Laxus Dreyar from Fairy Tail. While not as incredibly complex as Zuko case, he still managed to not only redeem in the manga/anime but also in the eyes of the viewer/reader. The first time we see him he is a certified A-hole in all sense of the word. Refusing to help the guild in a critical moment and then actively attempting to take it by force, and who knows how far he would have gone if he had not been stoped. But after he gets defeated and excommunicated, right before he leaves you can definetly se the regret in his eyes. You can pinpoint that as the exact moment his redemption ark began. The first thing you se of him after the Fantasya ark is him arriving at the last moment to save Natsu from Hades. Next was him being accepted again in the guild and you see him helping in great amount during the Grand magic games and Tartaros. He still blames himself for what he did, and constantly calling himself out on it. But his two big moments where definetly the fight against his father's guild and the moment he consumed a toxic magic particle that would have killed all his friend and possibly a lot more people. And most recently in the 100 year quest(Sorry for the spoiler btw), on his battle with Erza she reveals that Natsu looks up to him and that if anything happened to her, she would have nothing to worry about cuz the guild would be fine under his watch. He definetly has a certified good redemption ark on my book. And is more than I can say for certain others (*Looks at Sasuke and Bakugo with disapproval*)

A surprisingly good redemption sequence takes place in, of all things, the second My Little Pony Equestria Girls movie, "Rainbow Rocks!". At the end of the first movie, the villain acquired great magical power, it overwhelmed her and sent her on a violent rampage that the heroes stopped. Defeated, she starts crying and begs for forgiveness and the heroes decide to leave her unpunished because she is no longer a threat. This struck a lot of audience members as awfully shallow and hasty, which it was (though there had been some arguable hints, such as when the character admitted her threat to hurt a dog was a bluff). Then the second movie comes around, and the first movie's villain is a part of the main cast, rather than quietly fading into the background. And the emotional core of the story is the fact that even though she's legitimately turned good, NO ONE OUTSIDE OF THE MAIN CHARACTERS TRUSTS HER AN INCH. Even the main characters keep accidentally throwing shade her way ("This can't be any harder than that time we beat- uh, sorry, no offense." "It's FINE."). So the entire movie is about this character having to keep moving forward in the face of legitimate and rational suspicion and actually earning acceptance and trust from the people she hurt before. It's much better than it has any right to be.

But he continued on because he thought there was no going back now that's why he rejected Luke back on Endor, he didn't think there was redemption for him, he knows he's done really bad things and his voice to Luke sounded like hints of regret, he really wanted to go with luke but again, he thought there was nothing for him in the redemption department. But your partially right, if it wasn't Luke being electrocuted by Palpatine vader would've just stood there and let it happen, he was by all means a broken man and I don't mean physically. In canon it's known that after his physical death, Vader now reborn again as Anakin sifted through the void as a consciousness, until obi-wan helped him contain his consciousness. Right then and there, Anakin deeply apologized for his actions during and before the empire era. So in a spiritual sense, 'Vader' found redemption. Publicly? No, no one even knew Vader was really, they just saw him as palpatine and Tarkin's attack dog basically. A majority of Darth Vader's Development comes from the Sequels and comics, especially the comics and it makes Vader's death hit more satisfying. Give those comics a

I feel like, on the Theon point, redemption=death in its most egregious form didn't really apply to him, because he'd kind of already been redeemed by that point, and he died not as part of his redemption, but as someone who had already proven himself. The redemption part of his character arc had mostly been wrapped by that point, and his redeemed self was the one who died, in a moment of characterisation that showed off his newer selflessness/dedication.

For Anakin’s redemption, it works because when he was Darth Vader, he was just a broken man in a shell. The armor in a way represents a coffin basking him in his own hell. He’s being kept alive by machinery, so when Anakin dies, he’s brought to peace,

The failure better not be too bad. I stopped reading a very good series because I couldn't stand the schizophrenic "protagonist" anymore. After 1200 pages a return to square one was unacceptable (CONDITIONS!!!!).

Wonderful video. You need to lower the volume on transitions though. Random eardrum-shattering drones in between light whispers is frustrating.
