These videos are really informative and helpful but there were a few times that I felt that it was going too fast to understand and had to rewind. I did try slowing down the video to 0.75 speed but that becomes too sIow. I think it would be really helpful to slow down your speech a little bit, especially for those whose first language isn't English. Other than that, fantastic content.

My favourite historical empire is, because I'm Chinese, the Chinese Empire. And I know, there are a bazillion dynasties and times of troubles and WHATEVER but the cultural identity all the way from the mythological Xia Dynasty (~3000BCE, allegedly) to the colonial age Qing Dynasty has been CHINESE. The cultural identity of the people (not the ruling body) never shifted, people still spoke the same language and identified as the same people. And I believe this makes Imperial China a great case-study for empires, everything you can think of that would affect an empire, it has happened in China, and determining what happens in response to whatever happened is as simple as seeing how China responded and examining the inlaid facts. Now that's enough extreme cultural patriotism from me, my favourite fictional empire is either the Galactic Empire in Star Wars or the Begnion Empire in Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn. Okay they're more of the "love to hate" types for me but in all honesty, they did a GREAT job in cowing new territories and making their central people happy through the use of misinformation and well-hidden oppression. If not for those MEDDLESOME KIDS, both these empires would continue their reign of terror for quite some time.

Super late to the party, but the favourite historical empire is the Achaemenid Empire. Even just looking at its shape, it's very definitely "empire-shaped", and its structure adapted and refined the Neo-Assyrian model of governance and became the template of Empire forever after. Alexander left it pretty much in-place, and many of the practices were further adapted by the Romans through the Diadochi and Parthians. It established staples of Empire, with a professional core of the army, messenger posts, long road networks, and facilitated trade throughout the realm - from the Indus to Makedon. Theirs were the Kings of Kings, and theirs was the Empire of Empires.

When Alexander the Great was on his deathbed, his generals asked him who he'd leave the empire to. His reply was "To the strongest." This could be used in worldbuilding, In The Dragon Prince, Viren tries to get the other four kingdoms to fight the elves. In Andromeda, the Systems Commonwealth fell when the Nietzcheans rebelled. The first battle of the Nietchean Civil War led to its collapse. Gene Roddenberry used the ambush of Publius Quinctilius Varus by the Germanic tribes as the inspiration for the Neitechean Rebellion.

So, my interstellar human empire simply does not allow any of its citizens to leave. Anyone who is born within the Empire's borders lives their life within the Empire's borders and dies within the Empire's borders. This is achieved by establishing many outposts at the supposed borders, which purpose is to intercept both Empire's citizens and any intruders. In case of citizens they just turn them around, as for the intruders - they are sent to an interrogation as to why they are here, and if there isn't anything suspicious about it, they are sent back to where they came from. However, if there is indeed something suspicious about those unexpected and unwanted visitors, their vessel gets confiscated, and they themselves are taken hostage and imprisoned without any right to leave, cause at this point they would probably know too much to let them go. However, there isn't really any reason for the citizens to leave. Within the Empire they are provided with heathcare, education, workspace, law protection, easy means of travel and many other goodies. Well, at least for the core worlds, for the outskirts - maybe, but not always. And as a cherry-on-top there is propaganda - lots and lots of propaganda. It states that the outer world is unsafe for humans, that the so-called Xenos (all alien races, basically) hates Human race and wants to eradicate it whole. Only within the Empire's borders it's safe. Only the Empire can and will provide its citizens with safety and stability that Mankind needs. The power is in Unity - only together Humans are truly strong and powerful enough to resist the threats of the outer world. And somehow this Empire needs to last at least for a thousand years (a Millennium, if you will). Because its ultimate goal is to gather lots and lots of resources during this Millennium, build most massive fleet this Galaxy has ever seen, have generations upon generations of trained and obedient soldiers, for it at one faithful day to just come to their enemies and crush them once and for all, wiping all Xenos races and establishing the Great Human Empire across all of the Galaxy. (Only the highest of the highest know that plan, the actual citizens don't even suspect anything, they would think that it's all for safety measures, until the time comes)

I don’t have a true favorite empire though there are some I very much like. The Hittite empire was interesting in how they handled religion. When they met new cultures or concurred them they were interested in what God’s they worship and incorporated them into their culture. They fell during the Bronze Age collapse caused by drought, famine, and multiple uprisings. The Achaemenid empire was very well organized. It had a centralized, bureaucratic administration. There was a king with satraps under him. It had multicultural policies for building infrastructure such as roads and a postal system and the use of an official language across its many territories. They had civil services and a large professional army. It inspired similar systems in later empires. The territories had cultural and religions left intact when they joined or were conquered.

The World Government of One Piece is an example that does provide an economic reason for being a part of it! The island-filled world of One Piece is divided by natural barriers circling the globe into four main quadrants, the Blue Seas. Divided along the prime meridian by the sheer-faced mono-continent of the Red Line and along the equator by the sea of the Grand Line, which is flanked by the impassable Calm Belts. Except that there is a way to pass the Calm Belts, the WG has a monopoly on it and nearly all passages over the Red Line, where their leaders live, allowing them complete control of global trade. They also don't own but lean very heavily on the world's only global newspaper allowing them propaganda control as well.

Interesting thoughts for fleshing out my setting's nations. Namely, the Reunified City-States of Quinn-Hram (formerly the empire of Quinn-Hram). As implied by the name and name change, Quinn-Hram fell apart but has rebuilt. It is a setting where recovery of advanced sci-fi tech can suddenly catapult individuals leagues ahead of everyone else in one specific aspect or another. This led to a lot of petty warlords declaring the independence of their city-states and then trying to rule by brute force alone. Which led to the citizens still being loyal to Quinn-Hram and not these new despots. Making these wannabe empires short-lived before rejoining Quinn-Hram. (Although the temporary success of these city-states encouraged further rebellions, and Quinn-Hram juggles a good dozen opportunists only nominally loyal.) Raises the question of the Oslint Prinicipalities, which successfully remained free - although now most of its land was not former Quinn-Hram, but Kato Collective. Sounds to me like one of the other warlords tried to take proto-Oslint, and Oslint defended itself better than Quinn-Hram defended Oslint. That is why Oslint remains independent - Quinn-Hram is clearly stretched thin, and it's better on its own. Sounds like Oslint has better (more widely available) communication, transport, and/or scouting abilities.

Something I think people forget is that most empires were not entirely directly controlled from the capital For example Britain created dominions allowing its settler colonies to govern themselves. Allowing the uk to have more man power and reduce expenses in maintaining their empire. Also consider protectorates, essentially a state will be allowed self government with things such as their own monarch, however these protectorates are represented and defended by the protecter. Britain also employed this frequently in various nations such as Tonga, Zanzibar and the various Indian princely states

[I've made a comment similar to this somewhere else but don't remember where, so apologies if this appears to be a repeat.] What about writing a government structure where the central government doesn't have a fixed location but travels among the provinces and is hosted by various local governments. Something similar to this was done in medieval Europe where the seat of government was wherever the king was. To my knowledge this was mostly done with absolute monarchies where their word was the law and they needed to travel to maintain the rule of law and render verdicts. The challenge would be for a larger parliamentary apparatus to travel of rotate on a circuit. The large advantage is that more people wouldn't think of their government as a far away city that unfairly exerts power over people a continent away, but as an apparatus to administrate law and social programs that is both consistent nation wide and relevant to your locale. If the governing body is routinely drawn from all corners of the nation and long distance travel for representatives is routine, then the effect is mostly for persons from one geographic extreme or the other to take turns travelling long distance. Another advantage is that power doesn't concentrate in one province and it doesn't end up being the only one that matters to national politics. Not every town would be expected to be able to house such an assembly, but the provincial capitols would be expected to.

One thing i noticed about 40k is how the Imperium falls apart because The High lords of Terra can't communicate effectively enough to the Imperium at large where to mobilize troops, and when troops do arrive it often too late. Also its the high lords of Terra being to Naïve and refusing to listen to Inquisitor Kryptman when he tells them about the Tyranids, as such when they do see the threat it is too late, and when the later hive fleets attack the underbelly of the imperium, communication is too slow to from a cohesive defence.

It’s less about making being in the Empire preferable to being independent, it’s about making independence not worth the bloodshed and suffering of rebelling. Bc if you actually made it preferable to be in the empire that would mean giving them equal rights which would make them either citizens or allies and it wouldn’t be an empire anymore (and yes I’m counting things like denying access to necessary resources as a form of violence used to coerce people into submission)

I’m currently trying to write what is more akin to a city state, but a lot of these things still apply, especially the whole “cultural connection”. Thing, as it is a low-fantasy world, mostly being supernatural entities beyond the control of humans, there are some impossible things, like the immortal king in my setting. The main connection is that he essentially United and has saved the people in what is now his land, multiple times. Although originally he was a brutal dictator who uhh... literally came in, killed a bunch of people and then just sorta took the throne, he shifted to a more self governing system, where he still has power, and still makes big laws, he gives his people a fair amount of control in their laws and lives. And by him protecting his people I don’t mean him telling his soldiers to go fight for him, I mean he leads the charge. So there’s that, as well as the fact the people of my setting are very, very superstitious. It all takes place in a population of under 20,000 people, but then again, it’s in a post-apocalyptic world.

They give me so much useful information incredibly fast, I love how deep you go into the backstory and behind the scenes because that makes a great story, I also love making things as realistic as possible even in fantasy sci-fi settings so everything that isn't made up feels more real and more believable. I love how you do so much in-depth research into all of these topics and present it in an easy way to the average person in an overview of all the most important bits. Empires allowing self-governance is a great point to bring up. I’ll use the Hebrews as an example, since they’ve been conquered a lot. They were extremely cool with Alexander since he let them do their own thing, but when his empire split, they couldn’t take the more overbearing authority and rebelled under Maccabaeus. They also had a love-hate relationship with Rome; Rome occasionally allowed self-governance in ecclesiastical matters, but instated their own province rulers.

Or like in my story you could have it that the ruler happens to be an all powerful god that could literally destroy someone with just a thought. It’s kind of hard to rebel when you are fighting an immortal with nearly limitless powers. I said nearly because he does have one weakness and that’s his inability to creat. He’s a good who’s main powers focus on death and killing, so he’s not really the type to build things, he’s had to rely on his siblings, or his worshipers to build things for him

Ok, you’re clearly a smart guy, and you read a lot of books, but to say that there are no examples of trade and justice being a key issue in a book series that builds an empire is ignoring a HUGE book series called the Wheel of Time. Written by Robert Jordan, and later by Brandon Sanderson (after Jordan died). Is it a little rudimentary? Sure. But honestly that has more to do with pacing than anything else, even the most dedicated reader can only take so much taxation, trade, and tariff talk. Anyway, I just wanted to maybe let you in on the wheel of time is you’ve not read it. Great videos. 👍
