In this video I'll show you how I restored my wife's grandfather's old axe. It was his favorite ax . I will also show you how to make an ax handle. I'll make the handle out of ash. Pleasant viewing.

That's a beautiful and very creative looking axe. The contrast between the wood and metal accents is great!
Vor Monatxrayaiz74
It's very satisfying to take old items and make something new and enhanced from them. Sometimes a simple 'facelift' is all that's required. Sometimes a little more. In this case, a memory of a family member is preserved for a few more decades, hopefully. The rework process is thorough and creative with the new handle accents and metal spline. I imagine this axe is quite a bit more durable now than previously. A good polish made it look highly finished. Great job on the tool and the time-lapse segments.

Breathing new life into something that it’s original creator, long passed away, would be proud of. I have a deep reverence for the craftsman who created tools and the tools themselves, that have lasted beyond a lifetime. There’s something special about holding something that’s survived not only time but the abuse that it’s taken during it’s lifetime. I think about who may have used the tool and for what purpose. Thanks for giving this tool time for the next generation to hopefully use and appreciate.🙏👍🇺🇸 Your skills are off the chart BTW.

If you ever make another, similar to this one, I think it would look great mounted on a handle of MESQUITE! In the us it’s mainly used for the aromatic smoke. Few know that it is a truly beautifully grained piece of wood. Just a simple carnauba wax, buffed to a high gloss. Stunning

I had to blow through most of the video due to lack of time. I have seen some nice restorations, but that is one of the best, if not the best I have seen. Everything from the cut of the axe head to the sculp of the handle is simply masterful. Wish I could restore one of my dad's tools. Your grandpa would be proud. That is a 'cutting edge' axe for the ages.

Wow - you used several techniques that I have never seen before anywhere else (combo wood/metal handle - partial depth inlays, and a very ingenious way to keep the ax head on). Beautiful results on the ax head and the handle. Thank you for making that video.

Beautiful job, aluminum inlays look gorgeous, the only con I find is the screw to secure the handle, would' ve looked a lot better with a flush bronce ribbet. Apart of that, this is by far one of the best jobs I've seen lately.

Красиво! Если повесить на стену и любоваться. Топорище,чем оно монолитней, тем крепче и безопасней!
Vor MonatVKTR CBRG

Really nice work. I would have loved to see the finishing process in detail (even if it means a longer video); it's the best part of it IMO! All of it, polishing of the head, sanding of handle, etc. I also assume you did some coating or even tempering of the iron head since it's not rusty, that would have been cool to see too :)

Vor MonatAlasdair Futon
I felt the same. A lot of the "rough" work was shown, and then it suddenly jumped to a much more fine finish. I imagine a metal inlay is mainly for looks? I'm guessing it'll not handle as well as a wood handle (stiffer, less damping) and over time the join will separate. Looks cool when new though...

Very nice workmanship and a credit to your grandfather. The only thing I would change as was taught by my father when using a slot head screw and now with Pozi/ Philips head screws to ensure the slot of the screw travels the length of the item as it will look better if you do than across as it is now but of cause that is for you to decide, just a thought from my late father from me to you.

Thank you for this video. One question, did you make the belt sander/grinder that you used in the beginning of the video? One comment. It seems that a craftsman at your level can rightly choose the tool to use. A file can give pleasure and control which power tools may not. Thanks again.

I've done a hatchet and one axe. Reshaped both profiles of the heads with a grinder and belt sander. Polished with some wet sanding and wax, that was the easy part. Fitting the handle was a chore. Nonetheless both turned out very nice however kinda plain. It's amazing what a person can do with limited tools! Anybody reading this comment know that you can do it also. Have courage!
