I'm not as extreme as Jocko, but I am usually up at 6am. Then its immediately into 30 min of HIIT, followed by 30 min of personal / quiet time. The key is not the extreme early start, it's the discipline of the routine that gets your day started, allows you time for yourself, before the rest of the world is awake.

I'm a huge Jocko fan, listen to his pod, reading his book, etc. I saw this video 4 years ago when it came out, had no idea who Jocko was, then found him again on my own about a year later. For anyone that is in need of some assistance, I learned about this in my college class. The reason why you are tired when you get up is because of at which point in your sleep schedule you actually wake up. You sleep is divided into different parts. I won’t go into the extreme details, but it boils down to deep sleep and light sleep. If you wake up during light sleep, you will feel refreshed and ready to go. If you wake up in deep sleep however, your body will want to go back to sleep. It’s not about the time on the clock, it’s about the time in ur mind.
Vor 3 years
Chris Penfield +3
@Garrett Melling True, another thing I learned about that is to not drink coffee for an hour and a half after you wake up. Neuroscientist Andrew Huberman explains how we need to give our adenosene time time to be processed. He has a YouTube channel (his name) but I don't remember which video it is. He has a few of them on caffeine. He's not against coffee he just says we need to drink it at the optimum time.

Ever since I've started waking up at 6 AM and developed a morning routine I've noticed I get more done during my day. I start work at 2 PM and I end work at 10 PM. Getting up early really helps squeeze in everything I have to do before I leave for work. I usually have between 1 and 2 cups of tea every morning.
Vor year
Ashley Moon +1
I think the key is the brain. When you have somthing to look forward to...its easier to get up. Also you are still somewhat in theta brainwave mode and that's when you are the smartest and creative. Having that alone time in the morning is so important for me and I dont leave rushing out the door which sets your whole day up with anxiety. I used to be that way and now I get up early and demand peace and alone time just to do stuff that makes me happy. Do a braindump of creative ideas or anything. I don't do anything work related until work.

Well it’s not just about adjusting your wake up time, it’s also about choosing what time to go to sleep. Obviously only getting 5 hrs of sleep isn’t good but in order to avoid that while waking up earlier is to pick a earlier night hour, 9/10 pm.

Everyone has a different circadian rhythm and that includes what time you go to bed, how often you sleep, and how many times you sleep(some people sleep 4 hours 2x a day). Personally, I have a ton of energy when I get 5-6 hours of sleep but if I sleep 8+ I’ll sit on the couch and be depressed all day, so I choose less sleep. My partner is the complete opposite and requires 10+ hours of sleep a day (Edit: spelling)

I've been waking up at 3-4 am naturally, without much effort and it's been really nice. I've been forcing myself to not take naps so that I have to pass out early enough from exhaustion. I'm about to pass out soon, 8-9pm, I can tell. I think drinking coffee early in the morning has also helped secure this particular sleep cycle. I think I'm turning into my ENTJ Naval officer father. Lol. If your sleep cycle is off, just push yourself to not sleep till the time you want to go to sleep, and it seems to set the cycle, at least that's how I got here initially, but I'm thinking the coffee/early morning ritual is also reinforcing the habit.

Waking up early is a real + because of the quiet time. No distractions. But don't ever sleep less than 7 hours. Try 8. Because the time that takes you to fall asleep and the random wake-ups in the night take you maybe 30-40 minutes of sleep. Matthew Walker speaks better about sleep than anyone.

I like the free time argument. That's a reason why I love working late. At 2 am nobody calls. But I wonder, they say, discipline can get drained by making decisions and using discipline. Ain't I using up my discipline by forcing myself out of bed against my will and then feeling like shit and making every following decision even harder because I feel like shit doing anything? At 2 pm I'm not useful anymore. Sometimes I think this "every successful person gets up at 4 am" mantra is real bs that does not apply to everybody, otherwise some people would not be perfectly happy and productive being up until 3 or 4 and sleeping until 10-12. To me it also seems like false grandiosity because what is always ingrained: While everybody else sleeps (is lazy) I AM UP HERE BEING PRODUCTIVE. I mean - why is it so important what the rest of the world does? Just take care of your shit. Whenever. The trick is not waking up at 4 am but thinking you're God and so much better by doing so.

Vor 2 MonateGarrett Melling +19
For anyone that is in need of some assistance, I learned about this in my college class. The reason why you are tired when you get up is because of at which point in your sleep schedule you actually wake up. You sleep is divided into different parts. I won’t go into the extreme details, but it boils down to deep sleep and light sleep. If you wake up during light sleep, you will feel refreshed and ready to go. If you wake up in deep sleep however, your body will want to go back to sleep. It’s not about the time on the clock, it’s about the time in ur mind.
Vor 3 yearsChris Penfield +3

Vor yearAshley Moon +1
I think the key is the brain. When you have somthing to look forward to...its easier to get up. Also you are still somewhat in theta brainwave mode and that's when you are the smartest and creative. Having that alone time in the morning is so important for me and I dont leave rushing out the door which sets your whole day up with anxiety. I used to be that way and now I get up early and demand peace and alone time just to do stuff that makes me happy. Do a braindump of creative ideas or anything. I don't do anything work related until work.

My partner is the complete opposite and requires 10+ hours of sleep a day

One key aspect was at the end of the video: PURPOSE. Some times you wake up early but then can find yourself wandering aimlessly with your time (ultimately back into bed). Define your purpose, and your purpose will define your days

The SEALS I knew were just a unique breed. Highly intelligent, even intellectual. The ones I knew slept, kinda. It’d be nothing for them to go on a ten mile run before dawn, work, work out again, squeeze in a college course, hit the rack around midnight or one, and start the whole routine all over again.

I wake up at 5 am every day because my work starts at 7 am and it's about an hour drive away. I don't really have any choice not to wake up early, but at least it means I have some free time after work. My work isn't always this far away, but waking up at 5 means I generally don't need to change my wake up time for when work is farther away and gives me some time to be productive in the morning before work when it's closer.

I find if I start my day with a short (15-20min) jog, I have much more energy throughout the day. For those looking for motivation, try making yourself do this one thing. Don't push yourself too hard (or you won't benefit from the max energy). It works. From there, the rest of the day is easy.

Waking up early is a real + because of the quiet time. No distractions. But don't ever sleep less than 7 hours. Try 8. Because the time that takes you to fall asleep and the random wake-ups in the night take you maybe 30-40 minutes of sleep. Matthew Walker speaks better about sleep than anyone.

you've really got me hyped to divert all the time in my day when I'm relaxed and happy to hours where i can be productive so i can increase my well being for the hours that I am productive or asleep.
Vor 2 yearsLevmann Pe

*Geez, my Uncle was just like this, only 4 or 5 hours of sleep a night, healthy as hell but had a heart attack at 57 that was attributed to a lack of sleep... not good advice at all. Sleep is essential, far too many studies have proven that!* 8 hours work, 8 hours play, 8 hours rest equals the 24 best. Dad has lived by these rules all his life, now he’s 87 and still getting around like a 20 year old!!!
Vor 4 yearsRoseOfTheBear +27
Yep. *Most* adults need seven to eight hours minimum to maintain health. Anything less and cortisol (neurotoxic) begins accreting, and tissues do not have enough time to repair themselves.

I go to sleep at 1930 and wake up at 0330 five days a week. Most mornings I wake up before my alarm goes off, immediately get up and make my bed. The making of my bed is an important achievement that sets propels me into being productive for the entire day.

Jacko is awesome and has made me think hard about self discipline- but the funniest moment in the film - Casey please tell me you made it happen - is when Jacko says “don’t eat the burger, it’ll taste great but you will feel so bad afterwards”, and just then, right then, we have a YT add for burgers, a huge larger than life Deliveroo cheese burger, full screen....brilliant 🍔
