Just so you know...this video has been the catalyst to a massive life change for me. Seriously. I'm coming back to it after 6 months. I've lost almost 40 pounds. Written 16 chapters of a book. This video is so motivating, so logical, and the visual aid is perfect. Edit: Thank you Casey

@Part4 I'm sorry I never responded to this. I wake up every morning at 4am. I got to bed around 930. I sleep an extra hour on Saturday and Sunday. An extra 2 hours if I feel like I really need to catch up on sleep. At first, I didn't allow myself ANY deviation, because for me, the smallest disturbance in a discipline can lead to me falling our of the habit fast, however this is a VERY ingrained ritual now. So I have no problem waking up early again on Monday. Sometimes, if I'm concerned that I'm not getting enough sleep, I go to sleep earlier. I always try to adjust my sleeping schedule, when I have to, on the FRONT end, not the morning. I want life and activities to PIVOT off that 4am foundation. So far, it's worked great. I've taken up a 52 short story per year challenge, on top of my other goals. And I read the bible, for 45 minutes with coffee before I start anything else, like my writing. These are all things that I wouldn't have even started before, because I wouldn't believe I could do it. But now, gaining an extra 3 hours in the morning when my brain is as fresh as it could be, I feel like I can take on just about anything.

Ever since I've started waking up at 6 AM and developed a morning routine I've noticed I get more done during my day. I start work at 2 PM and I end work at 10 PM. Getting up early really helps squeeze in everything I have to do before I leave for work. I usually have between 1 and 2 cups of tea every morning.

I think the key is the brain. When you have somthing to look forward to...its easier to get up. Also you are still somewhat in theta brainwave mode and that's when you are the smartest and creative. Having that alone time in the morning is so important for me and I dont leave rushing out the door which sets your whole day up with anxiety. I used to be that way and now I get up early and demand peace and alone time just to do stuff that makes me happy. Do a braindump of creative ideas or anything. I don't do anything work related until work.

Science shows that different people need different sleep schedules. It's easy to sell an over-simplistic one-trick solution to ignorant people, but it won't necessarily apply to them. The reason why this works in the military is that they have a selection process, this form of discipline doesn't work on everyone.

Well it’s not just about adjusting your wake up time, it’s also about choosing what time to go to sleep. Obviously only getting 5 hrs of sleep isn’t good but in order to avoid that while waking up earlier is to pick a earlier night hour, 9/10 pm.

I might not be the first to say this, but I absolutely needed this video. I get up at 9am and think I've done well... after doing exactly what Jocko said; turning over and embracing a little more sleep. I do have the 'excuse' that I'm a night shift worker. But that's what that is; an excuse. Now, I see exactly where it goes wrong. My day, every day, starts of on the wrong side of productivity. GET UP. WIN.

Great film from Casey again- I’m trying so hard to learn from you. Inspirational. Jacko is awesome and has made me think hard about self discipline- but the funniest moment in the film - Casey please tell me you made it happen - is when Jacko says “don’t eat the burger, it’ll taste great but you will feel so bad afterwards”, and just then, right then, we have a YT add for burgers, a huge larger than life Deliveroo cheese burger, full screen....brilliant 🍔

I've been waking up at 3-4 am naturally, without much effort and it's been really nice. I've been forcing myself to not take naps so that I have to pass out early enough from exhaustion. I'm about to pass out soon, 8-9pm, I can tell. I think drinking coffee early in the morning has also helped secure this particular sleep cycle. I think I'm turning into my ENTJ Naval officer father. Lol. If your sleep cycle is off, just push yourself to not sleep till the time you want to go to sleep, and it seems to set the cycle, at least that's how I got here initially, but I'm thinking the coffee/early morning ritual is also reinforcing the habit.

Jocko’s line of reasoning holds up and can be applied even without getting up at 4am. He utilizes the foundations of habit building to become the future self he wants to be. Casey seems to work hard for the sake of working hard…to tell people he works hard. Tho, he is more entertaining than Jocko.

maybe take this with a grain of salt if you're already sleeping badly. there's lots of research showing that it's important to get enough sleep so i wouldn't do this if you are one of the many people that struggle to get to sleep and get to sleep late already. if you are one of those people, getting up slightly earlier day-by-day can help to push your sleep schedule forward so that it's easier to get to sleep at a more reasonable time. what i would also add is that if you get up at 4am, you won't get as much of a release of serotonin in your brain (wakeful promoting hormone) due to the lack of sunlight which would potentially make you feel very groggy and would make it harder to get up and stay awake. don't get me wrong, though, getting up later in the day is arguably just as bad but i think a fair middle ground is around sunrise.

You guys are so right. I found this out lately by accident . I was drinking a lot of dank beer for a year and working a lot (I thought). Before I knew it I was waking up as soon as i sobered up. After too long I became accustomed to 5 am and laying in bed hours before the alarm at 7 Now months go by I now still abuse alcohol, marijuana and lsd, I got another job in the morning doing groundskeeper and bicycle between buildings and then to my regular job and filling my free time on the weekends with work I find once you start walking up at 5AM you really start waking up 3 and laying there enjoying your morning for hours before you get up and start your day which by 11 you are tired sleep wake up and are it again . Dec now I started waking up at 5am in april this year. I find myself bored constantly and I never find it hard to fall asleep I wake with a jolt and work and pot break are close .

Though I appreciate routines to a certain extend (amount of time and such) that let you start properly into your day, but doesn't this kind of schedule (which Casey reveals in the beginning) mean, that you virtually have no or almost no flexibilty when you have to deal with unplannable circumstances and have a feeling of lack of variety? @FactFinder I assume you base "90 minutes is better than 7 or 8 hours" logic on the fact that 8 hours is not wholly divisble by 90mins and that it's better to wake at the end of a cycle rather than part way through? The latter part is true to an extent, however, the more hours of deep sleep (Stage 3&4) a person gets per night, the better their GH release, cellular repair and memory consolidation. FYI sleep cycles can be 75-120 minutes long.

@FactFinder you are totally discrediting the work of hundreds / thousands of sleep researchers who have come to the unanimous conclusion that 7-9 hours (consistent times too) each night is the optimal sleeping arrangement? (Note, doesn't have to be 9 hours, that's what 7-9 means..). Also, things like those with early plaque accumulation (early sign of Alzheimer's) having the onset delayed by up to a decade by increasing their sleep? I recommend reading the book. You'll change your tune. I was the same as you. Was.
Vor 3 years
FactFinder
@Jacob Dunning 9 HOURS? LOL. He looks like a Berkeley Soy Boy, I don't even sleep 9 hours when I'm sick, but I haven't been sick in 10 years. I know the muscles rebuild during sleep and there's benefit to that but too much sleep...I guess if you want to sleep your life away it's ok. The 90 minute cycles have worked for me, I can function just fine on 2 or 3...4 seems excessive and a waste of time.

Vor 2 MonateAshley Moon

Lol. If your sleep cycle is off, just push yourself to not sleep till the time you want to go to sleep, and it seems to set the cycle, at least that's how I got here initially, but I'm thinking the coffee/early morning ritual is also reinforcing the habit.

maybe take this with a grain of salt if you're already sleeping badly. there's lots of research showing that it's important to get enough sleep so i wouldn't do this if you are one of the many people that struggle to get to sleep and get to sleep late already. if you are one of those people, getting up slightly earlier day-by-day can help to push your sleep schedule forward so that it's easier to get to sleep at a more reasonable time. what i would also add is that if you get up at 4am, you won't get as much of a release of serotonin in your brain (wakeful promoting hormone) due to the lack of sunlight which would potentially make you feel very groggy and would make it harder to get up and stay awake. don't get me wrong, though, getting up later in the day is arguably just as bad but i think a fair middle ground is around sunrise.

Dec now I started waking up at 5am in april this year. I find myself bored constantly and I never find it hard to fall asleep I wake with a jolt and work and pot break are close .

these little beeping alarm clocks... i hate that noise so much, i am awake the moment when the mechanism locks in place. The alarm is off before it started, that's how much i hate these things.

How do you function on just 5/6 hours sleep? Is it possible to get used to this and not get tired anymore?

I used to sleep early and wake up around 4:00-5:00 to do things that I can meditate and having my ME TIME until the time I was introduced to online gameplay.😂

Vor 3 yearsBrian Carlisle
I agree, I go to bed at 8 or 9 and get up at 430.
Vor 3 yearsJacob Dunning
@FactFinder you are totally discrediting the work of hundreds / thousands of sleep researchers who have come to the unanimous conclusion that 7-9 hours (consistent times too) each night is the optimal sleeping arrangement? (Note, doesn't have to be 9 hours, that's what 7-9 means..). Also, things like those with early plaque accumulation (early sign of Alzheimer's) having the onset delayed by up to a decade by increasing their sleep? I recommend reading the book. You'll change your tune. I was the same as you. Was.
Vor 3 yearsFactFinder
@Jacob Dunning 9 HOURS? LOL. He looks like a Berkeley Soy Boy, I don't even sleep 9 hours when I'm sick, but I haven't been sick in 10 years. I know the muscles rebuild during sleep and there's benefit to that but too much sleep...I guess if you want to sleep your life away it's ok. The 90 minute cycles have worked for me, I can function just fine on 2 or 3...4 seems excessive and a waste of time.
Vor 3 yearsJacob Dunning
@Ebani he explains it all in the book. "Why we sleep" by Dr Matthew walker. Very prominent sleep researcher and he goes into great detail on the processes inside the brain and body.
