I'm glad someone's actually talking about how bad 5G is. I switched from a 4G entry level phone to a 5G enabled phone (both with Verizon) and if anything my connectivity has gotten worse, not better. I find I have no service more often, and even when my phone displays 3 or 4 out of 5 4G bars I still can't get basic things to load like a web search or Google Maps.

Vor Monat
Vixter _
Vixter _

@endosaint2212  you said some great things. To elaborate on the 4g backbone, what I was making my way towards but simply decided to cut it short is the fact as you said many 4g Antennas (do note that, this does not apply to all 4g Antennas). However, this also brings issues with the backend of that tower, simce the theoraticle max speed was lower for 4g most of the hardware connecting the tower to the main netwrok system is also somewhat capped and is simply not made for the sort of latency that 5g could bring, so most of the 5g experience people have is mostly glorified 4g tech. You also need to note that mmwave antenas are not compatible with all devices, in fact most devices actually do not support mmwave, and therefore the coverage of it has not been great. Your example with a stadium is absolutely correct, but again no mmwave antennas as not too many devices support it.

Vor Monat
endosaint2212
endosaint2212

@Vixter _ Agree with most of what you said, except the piece about 5G antennas using the 4G backbone. Largely, antennas trafficking "5G" signal are the same 4G antennas with firmware upgrades - packet construction changes and such. After all, the LTE antennas are still perfectly fine, cost a lot of money, and provide significant coverage. The truth of the matter is that most "5G" coverage is the same exact coverage from LTE with minor convention changes leading to a slightly more optimized experience. Priority areas are seeing network upgrades providing slightly different coverage bands and *maybe* some mmWave ultra-wideband. That ultra-wideband is the hype-generator, but most people won't see it because it can't cover large areas due to physics (path loss). It's great at densely trafficked areas, though. For example, your commercial use case is definitely in the cards. More accessible to most people, sporting events already have a lot of mmWave small cells. Gone are the days where you can't send out a video at a game or concert. Your speeds are probably higher at a game with 60,000 fans in seats than at home.

Vor Monat
endosaint2212
endosaint2212

@Jspider56 You sure you're not talking about Standalone vs Non-standalone architectures? During the transition, a lot of carriers used 5G only for data traffic and LTE for authentication-like signalling.

Man, thank you so much, Marques. Very happy to hear your take on the crypto and blockchain hype. Very grounded approach, I think. My only disagreement here is a mild quibble with the panel gap discussion, but I think you're probably right with your overall take. I think the panel gaps themselves might not strictly be an issue on their own, but I think it speaks to cutting corners, and overall construction being just a little bit shoddy, a little bit less than we've come to expect over the century of the auto industry we've lived with. There's a lot that I wish Tesla would just. Stop trying to be so bullheaded and "unique" about. While I appreciate new eyes in the field, a lot of standards have been established for very good reasons, and I don't think it's justified for Tesla to breach some of those standards when it risks harming user safety and comfort. All these little things add up. Personally, as much as I want to love their cars, I'll probably be staying away from them for a few more years still. Elon's definitely not inspiring any confidence whatsoever, particularly as he's been showing his whole ass in public with the debacle of his takeover of Twitter. Maybe in a few years if they get the government to whip their asses in to line. Unfortunately, the political landscape is extremely turbulent right now, so my hopes aren't too high.

Excellent video as always. Very informative. As in most things 'tech'. Whenever there is something introduced - tech-wise - these companies shrewdly market them, hype them and give you all of the benefits of them long before they come out. This 5G is no exception, as with graphics cards, USB transfer speed ratings and other assorted products and services, for example. These things look and sound, great 'on paper', but usually don't deliver on the 'hyped' promises for a long time after their introduction. It's kind of sad, but this is the way of things for at least 30-35 years now. These are the 'cards' that we are dealt....Grazie. Keep up the good work MDBHD. Your videos are very enjoyable to watch!

I'm wary of your Youtube vs Tiktok take. I'm all for having both. If I had to pick, I would 110% stick with Youtube. However, the "they're separate things with different experiences" was also something I heard about movie theaters when Netflix started its streaming option. Yes, I'm sure that Youtube will remain no matter what, simply because of the historical impact it has made in the past 15 years already. Also, it has more content than humanity could watch for the next 1000 years RIGHT NOW. I'd just be careful with that argument.. time goes on - and kids have the same brand awareness with Tiktok that you and I do with Youtube. I watch Youtube 10000x more than I watch cable television. 20000x more than I go to the movie theatre. Not to say that there isn't a place for live cable TV or big screens with surround sound - but I fear that the Goliath that is Youtube today and tomorrow, may lose to David just as the heroes that paved its way. Remember, Youtube was launched less than 20 years ago. That's nothing. Blockbuster lasted a solid 23 or so years before Redbox knocked it down and Netflix finished the blow. Remember Redbox? They're still around but...

Love this video format. It feels more like a podcast. Also, not sure how it works with carriers in the US, but here in Canada 5G has opened the door for mobile data throttling. I believe that this was introduced in fall or summer 2022. So depending on how much you are willing to spend on your data plan determines whether or not you receive 5G or 5G+, according to their branding. So on Rogers for instance, in order to be guaranteed 1Gbps data speeds you would need to be paying $100/month on your phone plan. It's outrageous that something sold as some world changing innovative technology has really just become a way for them to line their pockets by digging further and further into ours. Just another way for them to sell to us according to privilege, and manipulate our senses from what we expect to what we actually end up getting. Every carrier here is now selling plans with "high speed internet" that is unlimited, but slows at a data cap according to the cost of your plan. To find out that "high speed" actually means max 250 mbps and would drop substantially feels like a con. Not to mention, like you, I believe the consistency of it to be appauling. We now have these crazy high (unnecessary) allotments of "data plans before throttling" which are unnecessary for the most part, because if in more rural settings the speeds are so slow even when within data allotment it makes the amount of high speed data you get useless. Makes me sad how much we rely on these companies as partners in our everyday lives in modern times.

Vor Monat

The question is more, why do you need 1Gbps speed on a phone? What for? I can do everything I need with just 10 Mbps...this is still more than enough even for watching videos...I can understand for a landline connection at home given you have multiple devices accessing at the same time, but on a phone? I laugh when I see ads from my provider asking me to upgrade my plan to 5G for a fee...

This has generally been the case in America for a while. Depending on your QOS, carriers will throttle your usage past your data limit. While I don't know enough about how it's applied to condemn the practice across the board, I do have sympathy for the carriers that maintain a complex and widespread network such that people can use magic internet boxes in 98% of the North American landmass with ease.

Fun fact: 4G/LTE has been with us for 12 years and everybody's phones are still falling back to 3G multiple times throughout the day in every country that still has 3G as a back-up. In fact, there are still a large number of countries in Europe and locations across the USA still running 2G towers, and there are moments throughout the day that a smartphone can't get a reliable 3G or 4G signal so it drops back to a shitty 2G GSM connection. The fact is, even after 19 years since the introduction of 3G, not a single telco in the world has rolled out enough 3G, let alone 4G, LET ALONE 5G, to be making wild statements and predictions about upcoming wireless technology solutions reliant on the new speeds.

I have a 120Hz phone and I couldn't care less, that's why I dropped it down to 60Hz. Sometimes I have impeccable cell signal and internet connectivity but it’s been very unreliable. Sudden and complete lack of service in way more areas than I ever had before. I miss good old 4G. Sure, there were dead zones back then too but nowhere near as many as with 5G. At home, if I switch off my phones wifi connection, the icon says “5G UC” which is meant to be T-Mobile’s branding for super-mega-ultra 5G. But it’s no more reliable than regular 5G and far less reliable than 4G. Im sure it’ll improve over the next 5-10 years but for now, it’s shoddy as hell.

5G - I get your points and they are valid. However for me in Germany on carrier Deutsche Telekom (T-Mobile) it's been a real game changer going from 4G to 5G. I oftentimes take high speed trains and 5G coverage and internet speeds on the journeys have dramatically improved since. To the point where I can be on a train for more than one hour at 200km/h and not drop a single frame when doing zoom/team conferences incl. camera for work. It has truly been a total game changer for me. I am also blown away by the 5G coverage in Germany already. I see more "5G" symbols on my phone than I do see "4G" symbols...

11:15 the big problem here is that 5G isn’t something that relies on tons of cell towers. Instead it relies on relay points. I remember watching a video on this back when I took a coding class: 5G wasn’t designed to go through walls, but instead it has a bunch of relay points that boost the speeds back up to optimal speed. Trouble is tho: those relay points have to be everywhere for the technology to work the way the carriers want it to. The carriers haven’t even started building the relay points yet. They’re still focused on building the towers. At this rate, 5G will never reach its full potential, making it a rushed technology that never achieved what the marketing said it could. What carriers need to do is stop focusing on the towers and start focusing on the relay points if they want 5G to be any good

Sounds like you need to get on TMobile for that 5G UC. I just did 3 speed tests in my house (WiFi, 5G UC, LTE) and while the WiFi blew the data out of the water (as expected) the 5G UC was about twice as fast as the LTE and I'm guessing the tower I was connected to is about 10 miles away. I did a 5G UC speedtest from my car in the driveway the other night just for fun and the download speed was similar to WiFi inside the house, tho the upload speed was significantly slower

I currently work as a Network Technician/Engineer. In some of the spaces where the receivers/transmitters are built into the infrastructure of the building, 5G is fantastic. Clicking something or downloading a file feels almost instantaneous. It makes enterprise-level work brainless since you can reach anyone or access any resources within milliseconds. Once you leave these hubs, 5G becomes utterly unusable and, in some cases, unresponsive. The only exception is 5G home wifi networks on newer WiFi6 compatible devices. I believe that 5G was initially meant to be marketed toward large business and enterprise operations and, in time, will be adopted by more minor operations, increasing the size of the network and thus its public benefit. TL;DR Yes, 5G sucks and is currently only valid for business and updated home applications.

Dude, I'm no mad conspiracy theorist, but I remember a few years ago we drove through a part of my city and I suddenly got a weird headache out of nowhere. Looked out of the window and above me there was a giant 5G tower. I have 5G on my phone now and it's... no different to 4G to me. It seems pretty pointless and I think living right by 5G towers (or any mobile phone mast) isn't good for your health...

@alec hinchxactly. “Regular” people are crosshopping Honda Civics and Ford Focuses (Foci?) not Tesla’s and Audis. There’s a reason the Toyota Corolla is the best selling passenger car of all time. Everyone can afford it and nobody has to worry about it

Another point on top of that is that the panel gaps will help them with air flow and will give them more milage per charge too.

1000%. I don't care about panel gaps either. But I do care about building the car correctly in ways that matter. Do the suspension parts fit just as well? Overall, it's such spectacular arrogance to yes, build a better powertrain because nobody else was paying attention AND THEN think you're better at assembly lines than the companies that have been doing them for literally a century.

I think the thing with the panel gaps is a misunderstanding. Reviewers do not mention them because they are such a big deal taken alone (you are right, most people do not care that much), but because they are an indicator of the maturity of the manufacturing process. Consistency in the build quality of the outer shell indicates consistency in all quality aspects of a car, and problems there indicate problems in other areas.
