Motion in a Straight Line: Crash Course Physics #1

  • Am Vor 4 years

    CrashCourseCrashCourse

    Dauer: 10:40

    In this, THE FIRST EPISODE of Crash Course Physics, your host Dr. Shini Somara introduces us to the ideas of motion in a straight line. She talks about displacement, acceleration, time, velocity, and the definition of acceleration. Also, how does a physicist discuss speed as opposed to a police officer? And did you deserve that ticket? You can figure it all out with the help of Physics!

Why not just find average velocity (122/7 = 17.5) and then double it to find final velocity (17.5 x 2 = 35)? gives the same answer of 35ms-1.

How I solved the equation (took me a while to understand) 122 m - 0m =0m*7s + 1/2a7s^2 122 m = 0m + 1/2*49 (because we're looking for a, and because 7 squared is 49) Then you divide the fraction (numerator ÷ denominator) 1/ 2 = 0.5 And multiply 0.5 with 49 0.5*49= 24.5 And lastly, divide 122 through 24.5 122/24.5 = 4.9... And round up to 5 Which is how you get to 5 m/s^2

I still have no idea what's going on at 9:25, v nought (or v 0) would be 0 m/s, t would go from 0 to 7 seconds, and then the end result would be 122 m at the 7 second mark. Using the displacement curve for 122 m - 0 m = 0 m/s * 7 s + (1/2)a(7 sec^2) would result in 122 m = (1/2)a(7 sec^2) 122 m = 3.5 s^2 * a 122 m [/3.5 s^2] = 3.5 s^2 * a [/3.5 s^2] 34.8571428571 m/s^2 = a 34.8571428571 m/s^2 = acceleration, rather than the 5 m/s^2 that appears on the video. 34.8571428571 can be rounded up to 35 which would be the the velocity for the overall solution to the problem at 35 m/s but that's not what the Displacement Curve is supposed to give. If we were to use the average velocity formula given in the video (or instantaneous velocity that @Andrew Shahzadi pointed out, which I am a bit unsure of as a relatively new physics student) which is ¯v = v 0 + at where we have an initial velocity of 0, a time of 7 seconds, and an acceleration of 5 m/s we can solve... ¯v = 0 + 5(7) ¯v = 35 which is the velocity that correlates to 5 m/s^2 as acceleration meaning that 5 m/s^2 for acceleration is correct. Though, it doesn't tell us how x - x 0 = v 0 * t + (1/2)*a*(t^2) would give us an acceleration of 5 m/s^2 even though it works to find the velocity of 35 m/s which is seemingly found instead. Overall, I'm very confused, someone please help ;-;
