Can I make a suggestion in terms of editing these videos? Here it is: please include just a few more seconds of time before the pitch/hit so we can get our bearings on the play. I’m constantly having to replay 10 seconds back so I can see the teams, the score, runners on base, inning, outs, etc... Not a big deal, but it just seems too quick to follow each new scene.

Vor year

I have NEVER heard a crowd make the sound of being awed. Stanton's interplanetary shot at Dodger Stadium produced a sound that was almost as mesmerizing as the blow itself. All of these are pretty cool, but the most amazing one to me is at 7:03 - forget that he's asking for timeout and the ump says noope. That's a 3-2 count, with bases loaded and two outs! And Cubbies down 2-0. If the batter takes that it's strike three, inning over. At best, he's probably hoping to just foul that pitch off. Just an amazing reaction time to the pitch. Stop the video (k) and use the period button (.) to go frame by frame. Batter is still looking back at the ump when the pitcher is in his motion.

Pence hitting the ball three times in one swing is still one of the weirdest things I've ever seen.

Vor 2 years
MarsJenkar
MarsJenkar

@Bob Dole I wanna say that he's referring to rule 5.09(a)(8): "[A batter is out when:] After hitting or bunting a fair ball, his bat hits the ball a second time in fair territory. The ball is dead and no runners may advance. [...]" Thing is, the rulebook goes on to state in a comment that if the bat breaks and hits the ball again as a result, that doesn't count as hitting the ball a second time for purposes of the rule. And we can clearly see the bat is breaking in the slow motion. Also, this is rarely called if the batter is still in the initial swing; one rules justification is that the ball may be in foul territory during the swing. The intent of the rule is for the case where the batter takes a second swing at the ball, or (more commonly) throws the bat and it hits the ball in flight (usually unintentionally, but this is specifically denoted in the comment that this is illegal regardless of intent).

I swear on a stack of holy books that I was at the game when Canseco took one off of his dome and go over the fence for the HR. My dad and I had seats on the third base side, so we thought it went off of his glove and over the fence. That is until we hear a guy laughing uproariously about three or four completely empty rows back. He had a radio and headphones with him and heard the announcer explain what happened. After his laughter subsided, he informed us. After the game, we raced home so that we could see the highlight on the evening news. Life was simpler and better back then.

4:40 is NOT a home run. The catch was made while the player was legally established in play. It's an out. Once he leaves the field of play, the ball becomes dead and all runners advance 1 base. It's the exact same as jumping into the stands in foul territory to make a catch.

Vor 2 years
Alan Hess
Alan Hess

@The AViator No it is exactly the same. Both are legal catches and when the fielder leaves the field of play, all runners are awarded one base.

@Fishing The List An umpire that calls that a home run would not be umpiring much longer. When a catch is made in live ball territory and the fielders momentum takes him over the wall or into any dead ball territory, it is a valid catch.

Vor year
Fishing The List
Fishing The List

@Alan Hess and that is the way it is called in almost every case, whether the fielder reaches over the fence or into foul territory. I am just saying that I have been watching baseball a long time, and somewhere back in the day, I have seen plays where the fielder's momentum took them out of the field of play, and the umpires ruled home run, rightly or wrongly. It happened enough for me to think that was the rule, when it really wasn't. The umps messed up, but there was no replay to challenge the call, and video quality wasn't that great anyway(but at least it wasn't black and white. I'm not THAT old)
