I can relate. I am a spineless fatties when it comes to my family health. I just learned to say no about two years ago. My mom had no money for food and I live with her still so I'm at risk to so I give her 200$ of my college money. When I was still in high school my sister is diabetic and she has not eat in couple of days. I was so worried about her health so I give her 200$ because I dont want her in the hospital. To be honest I would have more then a thousand dollars if I didn't give my money away. I know how to save but I dont know how to say no.

Assuming the person is mentally stable, if someone asks you for money make them earn it. You don't have to even give them an opportunity, I mean if you don't want to transfer money no matter what that's your choice. But if you do, you should make them earn it. If someone asks for money tell them about something you need to have done and interview them to see if they can do it. If they can and will great! If they can't and won't then they have to be turned down unless you want to give them it anyway. However, as I'm saying it's better to make them earn it. It might even take the pressure off of you and put it on them. Why? Because it'll make them feel unprepared maybe even stupid if they just ask for money only for the person to be willing to give it but only for something in return if even that. It should make them think a bit before just asking for money. Of course not only is my plan not perfect but I'm speaking purely theoretically here since it didn't happen to me nor someone I know. Anyways, if you want money from someone be prepared to either be refused or offered to get it only if you do something in return. Whatever side I'm on in the situation my method is how I'd handle it.

friend of mine inherited $20,000 when he was 16 (this was back in 1972, so a lot of money). He used it with all the wisdom and prudence you'd expect from a rural 16 year old who worked on a cattle ranch. It was gone within a year.

When I turned 10, my grandma gave me 100$ to spend, as it was my passage into preteens. My mum forced me to spend it all on my birthday party. She said some BS story about how “she can’t pay, ur 10 now, u have enough money.” She said “oh it’s ur birthday party, u have to pay for it. All of it.” Ma’am I’m 10. I do not earn a wage, I do not pay taxes, I do not even have pocket money. Oh and she threw a tantrum when little 10 year old me said I didn’t have hundreds of dollars, and that I couldn’t pay. I hide all the money I get from my dad and grandma now smh :/ my parents are divorced :(

Husband's uncle passed away. They found him 6 weeks later, still sitting in bed "watching TV." If you're not sure what happens in 6 weeks, well...Spaulding Rehab on YT or just imagine. He had barely any belongings because he was poor. What little he had went to his sister (husband's mom) to pay for cremation, etc. A couple weeks later, his mother and brother showed up at MIL's house screeching they "deserved" his TV that reeked of death, his 20 year old car and THE MATTRESS HE DIED ON. I still can't believe it 15 years later. It blew my mind.

I live with my grandfather and tend to his daily needs. Ever since my grandma died he has been depressed and the only visitor he really gets is his brother who shows up once a month or so. Its really depressing how behind my back, my other family members say things like "hes just after the money" etc. My grandfather is 82 years old, his wife passed away 7 years ago, and without my mom and I looking after him, he most likely would have died as well. Its pretty disgusting that the rest of our family sees it this way

My grandpa died a few years back. Him and my grandma had a house in Greece (he died in the States). No one really knows when but some point shortly after he died a relative ransacked the house.

Vor 7 Monate

Happened to my family. My grandparents have shared ownership of their house. This one good-for-nothing aunt lives with them. My grandpa passed away suddenly from a heart attack (rest his soul) but didn't have a will. It was known in the family that my grandpa intended to leave the house for the much more responsible Uncle. After my grandpa passed away, my grandma never got over the grief; since that day she just stares blankly into space all day and barely reacts when interacted with. That one useless aunt then brings my grandma in her demented state to sign the ownership of the house over to herself (the aunt). Grandma didn't have a clue it happened. We aren't as angry at the fact she has ownership of the house, than the fact that she used her own mother for her own gain after the death of our grandpa. Fortunately she didn't kick grandma out of the house, but it sickens me every time I see her when I visit my grandma.

In England there is no such thing as a college fund from your parents or grandparents. I was never given an allowance or asked my parents for any money besides what was needed for mandatory school trips (e.g. language trips). I did get a cheque on my birthday once or twice but tried to cash it once, it bounced so I never bothered cashing the rest. My dad was given about 30k in inheritance money and my parents found out my grandmother had been giving me an allowance and said I could have a rabbit if I saved up for the hutch as my school was giving away a surplus rabbit for free. I saved the money, my dad said no to the rabbit, I continued saving, then he used all of it to install carpeting after miscalculating the initial cost. They never told me; I overheard my mother on the phone to the carpeting company months after discovering my piggy bank empty with no explanation. My mother later fucked off too another country leaving me with my abusive father and spent every penny she had on her psychotic boyfriend whilst I had to help my younger brother with affording the bus to school, feeding him etc. I have multiple chronic illnesses and severe mental health problems that make it hard for me to work but still force myself to do gruelling manual labour jobs (up to 12 hour shifts outside in all weathers, shovelling animal shit for less than half the minimum wage, commuting up to 5 hours a day) and used to be on disability until the Tory government decided that even people dying of cancer can't have it despite ending up in hospital several times a year having broken down completely.A lot of employers take advantage of me being disabled black female with a history of serious violent/sexual/psychological abuse and low self esteem, I've been made to work for nothing for several months with the promise of a wage held in front of me like a carrot on a stick. I have always been frugal and not lived beyond my means, though. My ex boyfriend was given 100k in inheritance. When he was still living with his parents I sent him money to pay them rent because he didn't want to dip into his savings as well as paying my own rent to my dad, I would buy him a gift he asked for that cost literally 100 hours of my labour and he would maybe spend £5-10 on Amazon max, said a card wasn't worth the money on Valentine's day and would repeatedly drag me around shopping with him, ask me to pick out something I liked, I would pick something £5 or under and he would tell me no, that's too much and I'd put it back then he'd wonder why I felt awkward shopping with him. Then he'd go buy a Rolex and complain how poor he is. Eventually he rented a place, I sent rent money months prior to actually moving in. He then threw me out on the street 2 months after I quit my job (I had only just been bumped up to earning minimum wage after a year of earning half of that and was excited to finally have money) at his request and moved 200 miles for him. I was seriously ill at the time (up all night vomiting until my throat bled) and was working from home but I was thrown out because I hadn't got mee a new job yet. He had more than enough money to support me until I found a new job in the middle of nowhere but didn't want to and gloated about the expensive vacation he went on after when I was staying with my mother and her alcoholic boyfriend who literally tried to murder us several times and I often didn't even have running water or electricity living in a hand built shanty with cockroaches and mold. When I finally managed to get out of there I ended up being a personal slave to a morbidly obese man who fucking ass raped me, but at least I'd gotten a job from there 2 weeks after reentering the country and narrowly avoiding being murdered. My ex was more interested in telling me how shit his life is because his mother told him off for eating in bed at 3 years old. He still thinks I'm the selfish one who needs to make something of myself. I admit to messaging someone on Reddit from one of these videos begging after having been made redundant when my employer went bust and I'd been raped one time too many desperately trying to work my own way out of the situation.

I had an Aunt and Uncle who lived just a modest life, Aunt was a homemaker, when they passed away, they had labelled everything in their home, and had a very strict will, which divied up over a million dollars they had saved, sad they never travelled or did anything with the money just saved it all. Their kids were shocked that they had saved that much.

It often changes the beneficiary as well. My so went from being frugal and saying I meant more to him than money to becoming obsessed with buying designer clothes and watches nd threw me out on the street 2 months after begging me to move in with him from across the country because I didn't find a new job immediately. I had been paying his rent to his parents and on the new place months prior to the move and spent what amounted to 100 hours of my labour on an anniversary gift for him when he didn't want to buy a card because it was too expensive, then when I was homeless he continued to gloat about how he just spent hundreds on a shirt 'because he was bored' but didn't want to support me in a new city until I found my feet.

My aunt (mom's older sister) and only uncle took it upon themselves to take my ailing grandmother (who, at the time, had dementia) to go see her lawyer, and had him change up the will, so only those two will get the inheritance. They managed to get her money after she died, which upset my other aunties. My mom didn't care about the money, she was more upset with how her two older siblings took advantage of their dying mother. Also, since the house was under my grandpa's name, and they couldn't do anything to change his will, my uncle stated--to everyone--that once he sells the house he should 'entitled' to their money since he helped 'refurnished' it. We didn't ask for him to refurnished the place, he isn't getting a dime from any of us because he took advantage of my grandmother (whom I did not love, but cared for to an extent). He is so use to be handed money by my grandma, so he didn't work that much. The bastard.

And if he/she can't touch it till they turn 50 and assuming a modest ROI they would be looking at $10-12 million...and that's at age 50. And even if it was 87K at the OP age of 31 20+ years of growth could end up around the 500K+ mark... Not as impressive as the 10-12 mil but a solid starting point for a healthy retirement.

I know a guy who had a huge company that paid him an annual salary and when he sold it he decl7ned his retirement money from it because he didnt need it. He had a nice family but treated them badly financially even though none of them were spoiled and lazy. When he put his mother in a posh retirement home he sold her highly rare collectible car for a pittance! A decade after these cocky moves he acquired a young girlfriend who convinced him to back someone's investment. He lost a lot of money so I'm told. She runs around the world for months on end. She has a daughter he supports that wasn't his. The gf is very ugly but manipulative and he is hurting for his preferred lifestyle. Looks very good on him. PS the car would be worth a million and his retirement would have taken the sting away. Lesson - do t get cocky and arrogant when you're living high

My mother made this easy on us, luckily she is still alive and well. When she knew she was going to move out of her home she just asked each of us. "I am not keeping all of this. If there is something you want tell me now." I wanted her grandmother's rocking chair. My sister wanted a picture that was hanging on the wall and had been in the family for years. I don't recall what my brother wanted as I don't care. She gave us the items we picked. My sister and I each picked a simple item without monetary value because we love the memories of the items. If my mother has money to give when she dies, I wouldn't know anything about that nor am I expecting anything else. I have my great grandmother's rocking chair. My grandfather restored it while he was alive. I just sit in it and wonder how many of my family members were rocked in this chair as babies? I will rock my grandbabies in it someday. How could I ask for more? That is awesome. And I am grateful.

Disabled person here...has been screamed at a lot. Also, when finally approved for SSDI, if it takes a while, they will send out a backdated check for an approved amount of months, or to when your disability wouldn't allow you to work anymore. It was over a decade ago when I was approved, I don'tknow how it currently works for new approvals. I hadn't worked a lot before, but I did get a backdated lump sum when approved. I did not know this would happen but after talking to others it's fairly common. I can't remember how much mine was. I was to think either 8 or 12 thousand? I don't remember, could have been much less too. I bet that's what the family was after, the backdated lump sum check maybe? If they were familiar with the SSDI system they would know about the first check. Edit: before they send that check out they will ask if a lawyer helped with your case, the lawyer will get paid first out of the lump sum. I didn't use a lawyer so that was a nice surprise.

What does this have to do with millennials? Why isn't it titled "what happened when someone saved money for you or died and left you an inheritance?

I’m through half and there’s three ad breaks left on the play bar. Only remember one before. I honestly don’t give a crap about the ads; you can play them freely, and I’ll skip them.

Can't you sue someone for misusing funds that originally had different intention in mind? I've heard of weirder cases in the US at least.

You can but there are sometimes attorney fees and even if the court awards payment it doesn't mean they will pay.

No where near millions, but when my grand parents passed, myself, and both of my older brothers got a few thousand each as inheritance from them, one ex-friend of mine would mention how I still have over half of it left every so often as a means to make me... I don't know, "feel bad" I suppose that he was out of work so he could skip out on paying for things. Lets say we went to KFC or what ever, I'd pay for both of us, then he would the next time, and so forth. That eventually stopped, I'd end up paying 95% of the time and he'd bring up the inheritance I still had (that I didn't dip into to pay for our food, because that would be dumb and it's sitting in premium bonds anyway) and how he was out of work (as was I at the time), it eventually got annoying so I stopped paying for him.
