I get asked a lot about which tool to purchase first, a Planer or a Jointer? I always say PLANER because you can get around not having a Jointer with a few simple jigs!

Safe to say then, I should purchase a planer before jointer?

Vor 6 Stunden

Table saw has always been my jointer. Planer is the tool that is more important in my opinion. Many ways to get square joint edges, much less easy ways to get a board planed. When I ever get a planer I will have to make one of these jigs. I typically do not build with rough cut lumber though so square joint edges are more important in my builds than flat surfaces.

Sorry if this is a dumb question… if you have a jointer you could theoretically finish the milling of the other two sides on the jointer, correct? Instead of going to the planer? Is the planer just more ideal because then you can make sure multiple pieces of wood have the same thickness when they are finished being milled? (I have neither piece of equipment but just wondering why move to a different machine)

I'm just getting into woodworking and have read and watched a ton as I'm setting up my workshop (Tablesaw comes next week YAY!!) and while I have already learnt and understand what you showed in this video, I learned that from experience and many other pieces from other places but as another comment said "You were born to teach!!" Nowhere have I seen a better structured, more easily explained WITH EXAMPLES!! piece of content of the theory put into practice. You covered the subject end to end and I'm so glad you created this video to help others along their road. I've seen a few of your other videos but this one made me hit the subscribe button. Thank you for putting together such a great video and now I'm off to see all you're other videos and learn from what you share.

What an informative and well put together video. Kudos Tamar! - I’ve got the same thicknesser and similar table saw. I plan on using the same techniques BUT the only problem hardwood I have is thicker than the cut height of my table saw! 😱 - do you have any idea if there is something I can do to work around this problem or you think it’s not going to be worth the schlepp?

Nice work arounds, but honnestly for me, the time is the break point on this question for me. With a combination mashine you are faster and you are using one maschine for jointing and sizing. For beginners the tipps are great, because every maschine costs not less, but in the end, I bought a combination jointer as very early because I wanted to concentrate on the construction and building, so I was looking for needing as little time for the sizing and jointing as possible. The jointer is doing a better surface too. So if you cut it square with the table saw, you have to use the jointer again to flaten the surface, a work step, you don't have with a combination maschine.

"It just depends on what kinda mood I'm in." Ain't that how we are?? I'm with 'The Warrior Song Project', Tamar. You are a talented teacher. I've heard this process explained several times, even by Colin and you finally explained it in such a way that I actually understand why it works. Thanks for mentioning that we need to check to make sure our blade is at 90 degrees to the table before making the final cut. I don't think that I would have thought to check that. I had not seen using a pattern bit in my router explained as a way to square up an edge. Thanks for sharing this method. BTW: You're an excellent 'sales lady'. Great video and very clear tutorial. One question though....when you are finished with the entire process you dry the wood inside the house but after that you store it in your (cold moisty) workshop again so it's protected because the wood is dry right? But when using it you will plane the wood to it's correct size making a new wound to the wood. Doesn't that give problems on your project? Doesn't it spin turn the wood? Hope you understand me I am from the Netherlands so English isn't my native language

Hey Tamar, quick question about the planer sled. I noticed in some of your newer videos you use an "anti-slip" mat rather than hot glue. Would you mind telling me which kind you have? I bought some shelf liner yesterday but I think it's a bit too thick to use on the sled. Also thank you so much for making your videos, it's already been incredibly helpful in getting my shop setup!

I like double sided tape sticking an unstraight board to a piece of plywood. I have a lot of both. By the way, I bought a small WEN jointer. It works for even long boards, but they are hard to handle alone. For short boards, it's great.

Vor 2 Monate
Russ Martin
Russ Martin

I did the hot glue method (after watching you) and it was sometimes difficult to get the board and glue off my "sled". I admit that I was doing 10' 8 quarter boards and it took a lot of glue to keep them in place. By the way, two things. Wahuda and WEN both make spiral head jointers, and two, it wasn't easy routing the template for the 6 in 1 jig. If I didn't take off the slightest amount in each pass, the router dug in and jumped. Eventually, I discovered that I had to take off about a 1/16th per pass, go over it and remove the cuttings each pass. Also I had to use a 5/8 bit for the heads of the T Bolts as the 1/2 was too tight. The 1/4 spiral up bit melted the plastic and that was the reason I had to go over the cut a couple times to clean it out before going deeper. If I was making two of these jigs, the second would be much better than the first. The first is a learning experience. I spent about $25 for the piece of polycarbonate though, so that is not an option. I'm sure it will be OK. I'm really taking my time and trying hard to get everything right. I will have some "plastic" left over, so if necessary, I can make more parts, just not another base. All the best. Keep up the good work. A devoted subscriber.

Is there any way to flatten the face of boards without a planer? Using the tablesaw somehow perhaps?

I don't have a planer, router table, table saw, or rough lumber. Need to go to lowes.

This is truly a great video. Thank you. The tapering jig idea escaped me. I have been using a track saw, but I’m limited by its cutting depth.

Even though I had heard of all these techniques before, this was the first time I had seen it all presented in one continuous step by step process. Very good job
