There are some things that reviewers often don't tell you when making this choice. 1) If you will be flying or live in generally windy conditions, buy the MA2. The max speed for the Mini is 26 mph and will struggle with wind gusts of modest strength and any winds over 26mph will simply blow your Mini away. You might find yourself not flying on great days that are just a bit windy. Since getting my Mini I've missed about half the days I would have loved to have been out there flying. The MA2 has a max speed of 42mph, so has more horsepower to overcome stornger winds. 2) The MA2 will with Occusync2 will have roughtly 5 times the range of the Mini. In an urban/suburban environment the Mini is going to have difficulty keeping signal beyond 2500ft unless conditions are ideal. The MA2 in the same conditions will most likely be able to go 8000-9000 feet and maintain better signal and control. 3) The propellers on the Mini are extremely delicate and not all that cheap to replace. The MA2 is a prosumer drone which new pilots can grow into. The strong plus side of the Mini is that in some countries it may help you avoid draconian drone laws, or in the US avoid registration. However, it should be noted that as soon as you put virtually any attachments on the Mini, such as leg extenders (recommended), strobe lights (strongly recommended) a lens hood (also recommended) you're past the registration exemption. The Mini is a GREAT little drone. It is head and shoulders above the cheap Chinese off-brand drones. It can fly in tight spaces because of its size (and lack of sensors that will fight you in those spaces). You can fly it indoors in the C mode which is great on bad weather days. Had I known a few months ago what I know now, I'd have skipped the Mini and gotten the MA2 as my first drone. But having said that, I wanted something more robust so skipped over the MA2 and got a Mavic 2 Pro and now have both which have their own strengths. It should be noted that since DFG's review, Litchi has released a beta of it's (amazing) app that will work with the Mini. It should also be noted that DJI has just (Aug 2020) released an update for the MA2 which makes a great drone even greater. Don't overlook the new features. If I were to do it again I would have skipped the Mini and gotten the MA2... However had I done that I might not have looked to purchase the M2 Pro shortly after buying the Mini, which is a phenomenal drone.

I just bought the Mini a few months ago after flying with the Phantom 3 (which I still have and love), for the past 6 years. The one huge selling point for the Mini for me was the portability as you spoke about, and with the new firmware upgrade for video control, it turned it into a little beast in a good way. I'm just a hobbyist, not looking to fly anywhere out of the line of sight. Thanks for the Mavic Air 2 comparison, but think I'll stick with the Mini for the foreseeable future.

As a mountain climber, the weight and size are two major factors. I would pick up the mini even if the price was the same for both drones. It’s like when it comes to cameras. For me the best camera is the one you can always carry with you without even thinking about its size and weight.

Love my Mavic Mini but at that price the Air 2 sure is tempting!

My first drone was the Mavic Mini, based mostly on your videos. I have been so pleased with it that stepping up to the Air 2 would be a natural fit. Mini was important because I could throw away the Mini cost, but now that I have about 50 hours of flight time I am willing to spend more.

For me the MM still is the best choice just due to the price and portability (not too crazy about the MA2 chunky controller) however the MA2 does look like a nice option as compared to the Mavic 2. Also I love that I can fly the Mini in the city and I haven't drawn any negative attention due to it's size and relatively quiet props.

Love your videos. I would say bitrate is a HUGE factor in image quality, esp in detailed scenes and with movement exactly like a drone would be experiencing taking aerial shots. Yes of course it all depends on the audience, the screen size, etc, as to whether a bitrate difference will matter, but generally speaking, bitrate means a lot...much more than the number of pixels. A 1080p video at a high bitrate will look better than 4K at a low bitrate (1080p Arri cameras look GREAT for this reason (among others of course)...obviously, this is just my humble opinion. :)

Your crash comment, spot-on. I'm a 77 year old with 4000 plus hours piloting conventional aircraft, and have always done so with an abundance of caution. Then I bought a Mini. After 20 hours operating the little bird my mind decided to shed 60 years of reason, and suddenly I'm a 17 year old who nicked a bottle of Scotch from Dad's happy cabinet. I purchased the drone to take photos of our lovely California landscape, and what happened? My ambitions morphed from photos to what appears to be a vendetta against the California poppy. By the way, the Mini handles a poppy crash in rather good form. I think it would be prudent to sign-up for your photo course, if for no other reason, to rewire a digressive brain.

I have a mavic mini and it's alot of fun, I find mavic mini can do most of the stuff which the pro drones do. I know it lacks some features which I would have loved to have including active track and sensors but if you are just a beginner mavic mini is the best for the price

Considering the huge price difference, the Mavic Mini is the far better bang for the buck IMHO. Also, it's far more transportable. Image quality isn't THAT different (video FPS and resolution instead are, for who needs 4K) - the only thing I really appreciate is the better range. I would opt for the Mavic Air 2 instead of a Mavic 2 Zoom, but not of a Mavic 2 Pro, when it comes to image quality!

Currently agonising over this choice. I don't really need anything in Air 2 that badly, but in combination all the improvements are pretty tempting.

I really dislike when some reviewers list specs that the more expensive drones have, and say that it's a con that the mini doesn't have them. I don't think it's a con, it's a trade-off for spending less money.

I bought and love the mini. I come from only flying fpvracing drones the mini was the perfect intro for me to cinematic drone flying. The truth is I really wasn't willing to spend $1000 on a Air. I now might be willing but I haven't really found the limits of what my mini can do and with the new update and my ND and polarized filters I think I've got a long way to go. Great comparison video it really helps people like me.

Love your videos man, I've been using the DJI MAVIC MINI, I must say that it's absolutely perfect for beginners as you're forced to fly carefully without those sensors the higher end ones like DJI Air 2 have. What counts is the content and not the best camera

Would appreciate a comparison between Air 2 and Mavic 2 as it seems to be a thinner line of difference

I bought the mini as an intro drone. I could have gone cheaper but with my Osmo 3 and Osmo pocket, I’m using these as part of a travel video. More than enough to start with and portability is a big plus. I’m hoping the MM continues to get firmware updates for more features.

I owned a mavic mini since 2020 Feb after seeing my friend flew it above the sea on a windy day. Totally surprised by the image quality and camera stability even the tiny mavic mini was shaking in the gust.

Such a great explanation. I was considering a Mini but no obstacle avoidance is an instant turn off. I have lost count on how many times it has saved my drone from fatal crashes. Even if you're careful, accidents are very frequent while flying.
