Martin Short Impersonates Bette Davis and She's Not a Fan - Carson Tonight Show - 01/07/1988#johnnycarson #martinshort #bettydavis
He’s annoying to listen to. This isn’t even funny in the least.
Bette was about 40 here. At her prime. Have another smoke
This is a bygone era. The torch was still being passed
Bette doesn't seem flattered as she should be, that's for sure.
I'm only 53 But those times where beautiful ❤️
This interview was way too long. This guy is annoying. Does not have the class to be in the presence of Bette Davis.
This was one of the worst ever. But funny to watch how it was not funny 😁
He is the best. No one like him
Wow A steady camera focused on professional, classy entertainers for more than 20 seconds, discussing and displaying their craft. Haven't seen that since the 80s The whole short-attention-span school of videography and production started in the 90s and only got worse every year to now. Swooshy jerky cam, sound bite size dialog, dumbed down dialog.
Wow, Martin Short is so relaxed here, in a good way. Very confident and comfortable.
The lozenge thing is classic - heard that many years ago.
too much Martin, not enough of Bette...he is just annoying
Bette was skin and bones at this time
One of the best character actors of all time! His Katherine Hepburn impersonation is next level. Dang I miss the 80's!!
So funny! The impersonations are so good. You just don’t see much of that anymore.
What can you say that hasn't been said. Certifiable genius...
God he is funny!
jofful watching johnny buzzing.
I'm bored already
Love Martin Short! You now instinctively he’s an authentic person. A heart of gold. 💜 (forgive my typo) 🤭 know
Forwarded to James Carnes that’s related to Kim Carnes musician that sings Hit Tune ‘Betty Davis Eyes’
😆 8:07 is the 2nd time Martin impersonates Betty and she doesn't realize it! He first did it at the beginning 0:18 classic 👍
So great. Kept waiting for the Trump bashing but it never came.
I couldn't help but notice the bellows of smoke Bette Davis was blowing in his direction throughout. XD
She's probably thinking "WTF?....." He is a little much, bouncing from one high-energy character to another. Different brand of entertainment than Bette. LOL.
All these has-been old Hollywood types act bored because they were used to a lott of action back in the day, I guess if someone isn't on a drug cocktail or committing a public raping then it's just passe to them.
Bette is an international treasure...the greatest actress ever
Thank you for your post!
Omg! I loved Ed Grimly!
Martin Short is a brilliant actor and comedian
Martin Short, my favorite comedian.
Betty Davis did not suffer fools gladly
Wow! The Queen Herself Better Davis sits beside Marty Short and asks him to immigrate her! He just throws a few words to her instead of initiating a full conversation in her voice with her! A missed opportunity! He probably regrets that from time to time! I a fan of both of them, great talents, just different!
At some point, having some young clown make fun of you and your friends is probably not so funny. Bette Davis gave us all a lot. Matin needs to be careful to respect/honor her even as he needles her and so many of her friends.
Personally I thought Martin short was rude to Betty Davis
Can you imagine Bette Davis just sitting next to you in silence while you do your comedy shtick? Can't relate.
Bad ass broad♥️
I really love Martin Short and I enjoy Betty as well ☺
"You must be born again to see the kingdom of God." Jesus There's more to life than comedy.
I bet you're fun at parties
Oooooh it's the genesis of Jiminy Click
This was fun. His Jerry Lewis sounds a bit more Adam Sandler to me.
He is so talented, you wouldn't know it actually watching him yet to act. It's so strange. He's incredible. But when you see him in a movie or trying to be goofy, it's unbearable.
I’m pretty sure martin Short is now Cathy Griffith
Those Bette Davis Eyes
Can't get over the cloud of cigarette smoke she's puffing out. Amazes me how people sat there un fazed by that back then..
@J. J. it was pretty great- agreed
@Chris W Good-to-know info, Chris. Thanks for posting. Sorry about your health issues, and hope you are feeling better now.
@Chris W Thanks for posting this bit of information. Even my addiction psychiatrist shared a closed door meeting among doctors. Discussion was WHY DO we as human beings even HAVE a nicotine receptor? If nicotine has no use or place. I'm a smoker all my life on and off. I'm a senior citizen now. Back in 1994 my doctor told me if I absolutely had to smoke, then smoke American Spirit. I received paperwork that named all the additives in say a Marlboro and I was mind blown. Printer paper, 6 or 7 sheets, small writing, on front and back of each page.
Commercial tobacco has thousands of chemicals added yet people blame tobacco. In the past tobacco was used for medicine. Natural tobacco is very sacred. Shamans use it to clear the area of negative energies and spirits. They use it on people doing Ayahuasca who are having a bad time and it turns it right around for them. What the commercial companies have done to it is DISGUSTING. I went sudden cardiac arrest while spinally decapitated AND had thyroid cancer to boot. Now I get natural tobacco and pull the stems and shred it and roll it myself. It is great for pain control. I have occipital neuralgia for life. I am 50 also. See my surgeries video. REAL natural tobacco is good. Your body uses it. The Osteoclasts and Osteoblasts in your bones love it and use it for energy.
The lethal power of allowing psychopaths to freely advertise.
When comedy was king… BTW who are these 2K people down voting this… LOL poor bastards😂
@Max Smith you’re young aren’t you Max? 😂
She could not act at all.
He needs medication.
She was rude as can be. She blew smoke in his face. I would tell her to move or put it out.
Martin is brilliant even now
Miss Bette Davis herself ❤
All the comments about the lady. Spare me. She was just an actress and one I could never stand to watch. Carol Wayne was a legend. Davis was a reason to flip the channel.
Betty had no clue he was doing her. I love Martin Short! Especially In the boy who couldn’t wait for Christmas!
"Betty had no clue he was doing her." Clearly, it is you who are clueless!
Wow LOVED that Robin Williams impersonation!!
I hear jiminy Glick in that voice he did very HIGHHHHHHH then very lowwwwwwww
Don't blame her
I love him so much 💛💚💛
That’s what I call a great first appearance on the Tonight Show! He was making Johnny laugh so hard!
comedian wright and david Bremer also. Davis is such an annoying distraction.
Sometimes when you don't know someone you misjudge them. I thought Short was this obnoxious ham, full of himself and always "on." You find out later he did the Pierce Brosnan thing with a wife with cancer and boy do you feel like a fool. Also that he grew up alone in his bedroom, lonely and imagining things and then you feel really bad. So now that I know the person is a sweetheart I can enjoy the amped up comedy personae and his genuine talent. We love you Martin.
This is was 30 years ago my God. So many of the people he is impersonating wouldn't even be recognized today as most have been dead for many decades. My memory of Martin Short is as he looks here and I'm afraid to see a picture of him today. Time really flys.
He was in an episode of Law and Order. Played a real creep. Now, all I can see is the L&O character everytime he is on tv.
Career is made if you can make Carson laugh.
Rodney Dangerfield was a regular on Carson. 70 appearances. Made Carson laugh every time. Mike Douglas was also a Carson favorite.
I love him in movies, but he acts like he's on crack in this, or trying to be Robin Williams. The fact that they let him go on and on and on while THE Bette Davis is there, was ludicrous.
He's a very talented comic. I'm just saddened that one of his most successful bits he had resorted to exploit obese people.Had he done it to raise awareness of a legitimate disease and not use it as a springboard to line his pockets with money while stroking his ego it could have been easier to swallow.
Everytime I see him the first thing I think of is him dancing when he hear's the music in his head from " Innerspace" 🤣🤣
I don’t get the caption. The few times Martin stuck a Bette impersonation in she didn’t even get it or hear it. That’s apparent by her asking if he impersonated her after he already had a couple times. You must listen. She was chain smoking and Martin was hilarious. I grew up on Johnny Carson and that format is still occasionally followed on other late night shows here and in particular, Great Britain. It’s just different because that ‘Golden Age’ of Hollywood is long gone. There will never be another Carson but Letterman was another natural...I was in college when his morning show came on and always made sure I was near a TV to watch him. I did think he wasn’t daytime material, they had to get him on at night. Eventually, they did. I do or did watch his Netflix series. It was great. Miss you Johnny!! You too, Dave!
Letterman was a pig. It finally came out. I guess being ugly, he could use his position to exploit.
Those old times when smoking and drinking on TV was just fine. Martin Short has always been so funny.
Lighten up Bette🥴🤣
American humour, comic books were probably the result of finding the simplest way to make a melting pot of very different cultures laugh.
Martin is Canadian
And betty is just puffing away. Too good.
My favorite actress of that era
No politics , just talent
😂 that is all.
Oh yeah, do you think he screamed BETTE! those number of times because she looked like a dead woman sitting there? Lol
I think Bette was not impressed because she was seriously hungry. The cigarette smoke in Martin’s direction was just plain OLD (like her) rude and petty. And she showed her ignorance asking him if he ever did her especially after he said, “Impersonating people is admiring them...”. She just waited for the opportunity to be nasty to him. But Martin handled her nicely. Looking like a dried up prune.....ughhhh.
Good points. He was and is a class act. She was just jealous. Not many comedians could make Carson almost fall off his chair laughing.
Didn't realise Martin Short was such an entertainer! This was a joy to watch, him and Carson are like old roommates 😂
@Jack StrawbBig time, 😂 His Robin and Jerry is better than Robin and Jerry. What a champ
Well said. Short is much, much funnier to me than Robin Williams. There's room for Carson in Short's bit--with Williams all he can do is sit there.
How cool was Betty Davis...
If I had been watching, seeing her was reason to hit the off knob.
Love him !!
watching Carson improv or rif is like watching a cow skateboard
Predicting the Future ... Marty: We did a piece called Lifestyles of the Relatives of the Rich and Famous. Johnny: They'll get to that soon.
I'm a fan of Bette Davis *as an actress*, but every indication is that she was an unpleasant person who was very difficult to deal with. The worship of her in some of these comments, especially at the expense of the talented Martin Short, is rather sickening.
Call a spade , a spade. She was a narcissist and very jealous of Martin, who made Carson laugh hysterically.
Bette Davis respected all performers. And Martin Short, what a delightful pip!
y would she wear an outfit like that? she looks horrible.
The only funny line in the whole interview was from Bette Davis.
We could Really use & many NEED that in 2021!!! I miss watching Johnny!!!
How dare he
She's a living skeleton. It's a bit unnerving.
I didn't know how cute he was then
Lol hilarious! I love it👌🤣😂
Martin is my favorite, always makes me roll on the floor laughing! Bette, what an icon. She didn't realize he was 'doing Better Davis' but it was only a few words.
She knew but played dumb. I am glad they ignored her for 10 minutes.
She needed Martin to give her the "Short" then Betty would smile.
Martin Short is nothing less than a comic prodigy. His Jerry Lewis kills me every time.
Do not wanna be mean but the golden era pinnacle these poor jr college drop outs in the 40's when 100k might as well be 100 mil and there were so few that most were never able to come back down to earth. Like the HS/ college jock who no longer plays.
Late night TV pretty much died with Johnny....all we have is leftist liberal crap now.....Gutfeld is AWESOME ! Hollywood as a whole SUCKS now. Can we make Hollywood/California great again ? 🤔....bye, bye to Gavin is a start !
This is why his wife died years later.
The boom mic in shot…they were still getting it together in the 80s weren’t they?
Today they would never have a big legend just sitting there off-camera while the second tier guest had the spotlight. Legends usually come on first then “have to leave”. It was quite genuine and unpretentious of Bette to agree to sit there in silence during his shtick.
She would have left if Carson had said "put out the cigarette." They helped her behave.
So, Are you that guy from Nickelback? BTW your words.. very very true.
There are no legends today.
@David Adams Why are we all here? Well, because this is the genuine stuff.
Well, I mean, it was Carson.
Love Betty Davis 🌷
Martin Short - a D-list celebrity. He was never funny.
