Manufacturing plywood boards: then and now

  • Am Vor 4 years

Victoria and Albert MuseumVictoria and Albert Museum

Plywood is a simple material made by glueing together thin sheets of wood, known as veneers or plies. These basic elements have remained broadly the same throughout its history. The most significant breakthrough in its production came in the early 1800s with the development of steam-powered machines that could cut veneers cheaply. The most influential of these was the rotary veneer cutter.

The cutter rotates a log against a wide, horizontal blade, causing it to ‘peel’ into a continuous sheet of wood. This enables the creation of longer, wider sheets of veneer than previously possible and with little waste. Using these machines meant that plywood could be manufactured quickly and inexpensively on a large scale.

This film shows the stages in manufacturing plywood boards in the mid-20th century and today. The process remains essentially unchanged, although today many of the machines are much faster and computer controlled.

Stop cutting down our oxygen. Build with dirt. It's cooler during the summer, and it won't burn down or be damaged by floods as easily. This is a waste

That's not fair thou. Finland never had dougless trees. Those are american big trees. In Finlands cold, it's mostly the normal fir trees that grow well. They can be used as hardwood, and they grow quite tall. If I know the tree type well.

And they are just standing on those heavy loaders while packing. Their leg or hand gets stuck anywhere, it's amputated. Right beside the heavy presser. Truly different times. Nowadays they don't even let people close to a heavy loader like that. Esp with that flimsy of a railing. One bad move and the guy falls down. The times when "well than don't make a bad move, and you don't fall down" was the answer.

The veneer mill I work at has been there since the forties and is still doing it the same way. From cutting the logs, to the guillotine operater, to sorting the boards, to feeding the dryer, to chipping the waste and scraping the furnace. We have Zero robots and fancy controls, and I couldn't be happier with it.

Manufacturing in America at one time was hard fast work, then the union's came in with osha and now we hardly have any manufacturing jobs left, China has us by the throat wake up people before is to late, union workers make crazy money with insurance and 401k and all kinds of benefits then the owners have to match social security withholdings insurance cost and on and on, the owners had to do something so they started lobbying to move jobs out of America, where headed for third world country status if you think we can make it as a service driven economy vs a manufacturing driven economy just keep dreaming manufacturing polit is ahead of the world now look we can't get parts for computers and just let a war break out with China they supply almost everything we use now. It's sick that Joe Biden has headed every big deal to give China what they have. So sad just do some research on his reign in the Whitehouse over a 45 years span.

This a great video educational. I'm a die hard fan of plywood and many other lumber products. This is not only my first watching of this channel but how plywood & veneer is made. At this writing i'm looking for veneers for my older loudspeaker sets. They're drying & over waxed they need replacement. I learned so much watching this nostalgia & current technologies cut & create lumbers! Awesome video! 🎥👋👋👋👋👋👋👋

Anyone ever really stop and notice just how far and fast we have come technology wise? Basically after a certain event in 1947 technology has moved forward leaps and bounds. Whats really uncomfortable to think about is what kind of tech is our governments hiding from us? Like they just admitted last month that they had successfully made chimaras, which means they have been doing it for quite awhile now. Soo..just how right is that "crazy" guy who won't be named? You know the one who is always yelling about insane sounding things? Lol 😬
