Another experiment with Patterned Plywood. This time I'm experimenting with patterned plywood edge-grain? This is a very DIY friendly technique that looks more complicated that it is...

This is a really thorough and thoughtful how-to video, but honestly, for me, the biggest benefit is pure inspiration. I’ve worked with a lot of reclaimed plywood and saved those little offcuts because they’re just too cool to waste. Your ideas have inspired me to create inlays and edge banding with those old beauties. Fantastic content, looking forward to viewing more of your work!

Cool technique. Too bad it's so labor intensive. My boss would never let me take the time to do this. Most people can't afford our product as is. Imagine spending a weeks labor doing this when you can edge band a $60k kitchen job in 30 minutes.

The first 10 seconds I noticed what a very nice table saw. But more importantly he used a push stick. All the videos I watch (carpentry) fab, construction etc, I never see a push stick. The craftsmen I watch are very good. They rarely use push sticks and they don’t invite the audience to. I had a wood shop instructor in high school BITD he was missing three fingers to the second knuckle or close to it. I knew a Vietnam vet chopper pilot who was burned bad in a crash. He told me the most dangerous time is when you think you are really good.

I thought you would make actual plywood with a patern... so cut the hole sheet with 45 degree cuts and put it back together... but of cause making edge band is cool too.

Clamp all the fragile strips together between two slightly lower scraps of wood, then gang sand the fuzzies off their edges in one quick sanding that does all of them at once. Fast and no breakage possible.

Nice video, One question, the board you had at 4:58 before you cut it up, would you say it was strong enough to be a chopping board? As I really dig the design, but not sure if plywood would hold up to the abuse of the kitchen knives

Perhaps look into a Circular Fretsaw Blade ( Used to cut fret slots in guitar fret boards on a table saw). Very thin blade and might be better/less tear-out with a zero clearance insert on the table saw.

GUESS I JUST NEED TO START TURNING THE SOUND OFF ON A LOT OF VIDEOS. I LOATHE, DESPISE, HATE THE DRUM BEAT CRAP SO MANY PEOPLE THINK IS COOL ON SUCH VIDEOS. VERY IRRITATING. WHAT ARROGANCE TO THINK THAT MOST OF YOUR VIEWERS WILL HAVE THE SAME PREFERENCE, TASTE IN SUCH "MUSIC." I DON'T. MAYBE I'M IN A SMALL MINORITY. I DON'T KNOW. I JUST KNOW I REALLY FIND IT VERY UNPLEASANT. IF I WANT THAT KIND OF "MUSIC," I'LL GO TO A DISCO. GRRRRR.

Novice question: What are you cutting into at 2:24, the tabletop material? I thought it was foam at first. Is that just a replaceable wooden top? I'm working on saw horses, but would love an inexpensive surface that I can cut into a bit without having my pieces fall. Thanks!

Hey great video! this looks awesome! well done, keep it up, this isn't criticism, just a suggestion from the natural world. the way crustacean muscles inside their hard exoskeletons work is that they are layered so that if you viewed the top of a 'stack', every layer would be a degree counterclockwise from the layer below it. This 360 rotation would be pretty hard to do in normal scales with wood but you could probably do thin stacks going 10 degrees different every layer, and get a very nice looking edge grain from this process, or so it seems to me, and the resulting product would also be a lot more structurally rigid because it transmits the force in all directions with the grain of the wood from that layer in the ply.

Vor 15 Tage
Chris M Smalley

Yeah. Okay. So take a big piece of wood. Make it into sawdust and small pieces of would, glue it together then make that small piece of wood into smaller pieces of wood. Wasting a bunch of it ? Then when dry , cut that piece into slivers of pieces and stick it to a cheap piece of wood to make it look fancy? Then bc it looks crap , stick some expensive veneer to it and trim away a bunch and just throw that crap away? There now, you have a $150 piece of wood that is 10"x10" ..thats cool, Make a coaster ...Hey , Paul Bunyan? Babe's gotta eat? Make something worth while? And I Have a lot of free time they say?
