MacBook Pro M1 Max vs. M1 Pro vs. M1: How to pick the right one for you

Claire Reilly
Claire Reilly

It's been great reading your comments about which MacBook you'd choose. I've decided to go into the Apple store and actually lift the 14" Pro -- for me, portability is huge, so if it passes the test, that's the one I'm going for! (Unrelated question: can anyone lend me $2500? 😉)

I would watch some of the base 14" vs the full M1 Pro videos. The render times and speed are within the margin of error... That's how close they are. Save the $500 or get more SSD space.

Great choice, Claire … I still love my 2020 M1 MBP. I used to have 2015 MBA with MagSafe, when the charging cable started to broke, I had to buy the entire charger set (expensive & rare in my country) vs only replacing the USB-C cable.

For general use and occasional graphic or video editing, I did opt for 2020 original M1 MacBook Pro and spent the extra budget for an IPad Pro (maybe have to add a bit more budget) for a superb Apple ecosystem.

Update: After considering this video and the Max Tech 16gb vs 32gb memory stress test video and evaluating my needs, I decided to cancel the Max and get the Pro with the 16” 10/16/16/ and double my storage to 2TB. Saved $400 and I think it will work just fine for my photo editing needs. Thanks CNET!

Am I missing something or by Apple calling it unified it makes me think his 16GB suggestion is good enough doesn't relate. In the past on the pro machines memory wasn't shared. It was at least 16GB with 4GB of GPU memory at a minimum. So it really depends on your workload. For any professional work, I would recommend either M1 Max because it has a minimum of 32GB of shared memory. M1 Pro comes defaulted with 16GB and I would leave it at that. If you go 32GB I would strongly suggest the low-end M1 Max with a 24 core GPU. It would be a 200 dollar difference compared to an M1 Pro with 32GBwith a 24 core GPU.

The M1 Air is best for 95% of us. Only Serious video editors need a Pro or Max. I have the Air, and the one thing I'd like is a brighter screen. However, that's nitpicking, considering everything it can do (and how well it can do it) for $1k. I have the 8gb/512storage version, and 8gb is just fine if you are doing mainly media consumption. Jump to 16gb only if really need it (application/task dependent).

Question: With the 14” base model is better to upgrade from 8 cores to 10 or go from 16 gb to 32 gb of ram? I’m not a “Pro” user but once a 13” is upgraded to match the 14” (including dongles) the price difference is small. I want to keep the price under $2,500 US. My goal is use the machine until it dies (hopefully 8-10 years). What are your thoughts.

Hence 16’’ M1 Max 24c GPU (sweet spot, 2 media engines, screen, battery). 32GB uni.mem. for my multitasking. 4TB internal fastest SSD & my cheap external USB-C SSD for backups. 16" MacBook Pro,. M1 Max w/32 GPU cores, 32 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD. This thing is cheaper than a top speced 2019 16" MacBook Pro and delivers waaaayyy more. I know, I owned one. They're powerful machines - not radioactive. I don't recall _anyone_ warning users off of the 2019 model - these things are just so powerful that a lot of reviewers are emphasizing that you don't need 'em - but most people didn't need a top speced 2019 either. The mini-LED screen is beautiful and great for content creation _and_ consumption, and the battery life and performance far exceeds anything in its class. The Max comes with 400 GB/sec memory access, and doubles up the hardware video encoders and ProRes encode engines in the media engine. The 32 GPU cores will handle just about anything you can throw at them, and will just get better as more and more software becomes optimized for Apple Silicon and Metal. Dan's point about Magsafe charging is another one of those talking head points - you don't _need_ to charge using Magsafe even for the 16" model - it just allows you to fast charge in half-an-hour. If you feel the need to charge through USB-C you can do that too, though current standards only allow you 100 watts through USB-C.

@Isaac Ogdan i would never buy a windows laptop. Windows/PC = desktop for me. If you want a laptop then Mac is the way to go imo. I've never seen a pc laptop than can compare with Apple. especially the touchpad and driver issues. There are other pros too. This is what happens when you control both the hardware and the software and you only have to support like 5 different devices instead of 100,000 and the developers have to do what you say. This is also why Apple's switch to Arm was so easy. If you game a lot buy a PC though. Remember

At least you have to upgrade to 16GB and 512GB SSD. Here in Germany, this is still at a price of 1,629€ for that, knowing that this is just 620€ away from the 14 inc Base model (2,249€). Without being a super Pro, I'll get the following tech upgrades: CPU, display 120Hz, better speaker system, more connectivity, SD card reader, HDR support, 1080p cam, etc. More future proved. @The Centaur If you need to change your setup based on more intensive future needs then just sell what you have later and get what's available at that time? @The Centaur The base m1 handles extrnsive requirements even for programmers and video editors. It is literally light years ahead of previous generation. Most of you don't push your laptops anywhere near that to even worry about future proofing. This is like noobs worrying about wherher a sony a6000 is good enough when it is 96% of sony a7iii in picture quality for 1700 dollars less.

Vor 6 Monate
The Centaur
The Centaur

@J L You know what you wrote is an opinion and not a fact, right? How old are you and when did you last buy a computer for your needs or does your mommy or company pay for it? I can't change the hardware after purchase and I can't predict program requirements for the future but I can observe programming trends that require more RAM and SSD. What if I change my usage to become more intensive, then I have to replace my entire machine at full cost rather than a fraction of it at my own expense. Mommy and Daddy are no longer paying for it.
