Why not just have all of the computer components inside the base? It's possible considering we have the MacBook Air which is ultra thin. This will give us best of both worlds, thin design and also no chin.

@Miso Hudek The iPad Pro doesn’t have components in one place those are spread out the iMac has larger speakers, battery, and cooling. It is a computer not a tablet.

I really like iMac’s, they’re very user friendly for family rooms. The chin doesn’t bother me because it’s part of the aesthetic. And the white bezels are nice to help blend in with most interior designs. I get how it can be a hit or miss with some people though. I think it’s a typical Apple move in terms of design and their target market.

The in really bothers me lol, especially when colors don't match with anything on my desk. All my other peripherals are black.

@Rhys OwenAh, apologies, I went deep in the discussion because I misinterpreted. But I get what you’re saying, it’s just my opinion that it blends with most interior designs. I think the white bezels help establish a cleaner look because the black screen is framed in a way that some, like myself, find pleasing. I do understand how when it’s turned off it can stick out thanks to the white bezels. It’s just an aesthetic I suppose. Feels more bougie. The juxtaposition of the black screen framed in white can add contrast, too. Whether it’s a good one, is subjective. Personally I wish more monitors came out in white instead of black all the time.

I'm just stating that isn't my experience when the screen is off due to the contrast between bezel and screen. In my house, which is very light/bright, the new iMac is much more eye catching than my old iMac specifically when the screen is off.

@Rhys Owen at the end of the day if it’s not your aesthetic, nobody is forcing you to buy the iMac. If you prefer an all black monitor without white bezels because it’s less eye catching then buy a monitor and the Mac mini or tower to go with it, or get a windows computer system with whatever monitor blends better in your opinion. For me personally, as I mentioned, I feel that the white bezels look nice and help it blend in bright open spaces. Will it stick out in dark small rooms? Of course. But again, very dependent on user preference. If you’re criticizing Apple’s marketing of their desktops, well all I can say is that it works and is appealing, whether we agree with it or not. To some people, aesthetic is more important and the Apple aesthetic especially is ideal for many so, to each their own.

@s e R A E t o n i n my point was the screen is still black when it is turned off, and when it is turned off I've found it catches the eye more in most living environments because that large black surface is now in a glossy white frame. The marketing material and almost every image/video you see online has a lightly coloured background or screensaver which doesn't convey the true look of the iMac when it isn't in use.

I agree with the premise that Apple compromised functionality at the altar of thinness. It makes no sense to me. In the 13 years I’d sold computers (I’m out of the game for good), not a single customer ever asked me for the thinnest desktop available, but Apple can’t seem to help themselves. And look at the functionality lost or externalized for that thinness, and the utterly unnecessary engineering problems they had to solve, as a result.

The reason I love your channel is that you understand and admit that something is just not for you and it doesn't have to make you personally happy. So many people just rage about things that aren't designed for them. As a professional filmmaker I also understand that this isn't made for me, but I can totally see my parents using one, college campuses having these and just computers for those working with documents and responding to emails. I think this is a perfect device to be on the counter of a salon or a coffee shop, where you get to see it from both sides. Waiting for that "pro" model, that would definitely be something I splurge on.

Hi Marquee, I have just found this video and really liked your presentation. I fully agree about the fact the thickness of the computer is completely irrelevant as ,say, a 20 - 25 mm thick computer could have accommodated the headphone Jack and a couple of USB-A ports. I also think that the stand would have looked better if they had used the same curved design as the 21.5 inch iMac. Keep up the good work.

I think that we have to consider a goal of Jobs, when considering what they've done here; there is almost *zero* cable mess, anywhere, on this machine, for most users. If you look back on original iMac announcements and others from Apple, they always talk about *eliminating* cables and the mess that came with them.

My mother was single with 5 kids and only a graphic design degree and no computer to do it with. (Around 1999 I wanna say) a brand new clear teal-ish iMac was delivered to our door, obviously sent by a friend or neighbor who knew there was a need. To this day our family has no idea who sent it, and although we were still incredibly poor, we were able to survive. Those old clear iMacs, odd as they looked, hold a special place in my heart.

I agree with this review. I always looked at cinema displays and thought that is what an imac should be like, a simple elegant design. Nobody looks at an imac from the side!

I agree! iPad Pros should have a tablet-first design that allows for workflows that actually take advantage of the new hardware! And they should have an amount of RAM that allows for that (as they finally have)!

I got the high end model with the highest possible specs and it's an absolute joy to use. I disagree with and don't understand the comments about the design, as a designer myself I find it to be a major upgrade from the previous iMacs, i love the white bezels much more than the previous black ones which used to be an eye sore, the white ones really make the screen stand out and I am in awe of how light and thin it is, the previous models were so bulky and heavy. Overall it's just a massive upgrade especially the high end model and would definitely recommend it.

Base model has one fan, if heat makes a difference in your work load. One fan is less performance and more noise, as it spins up more and runs fast. Just something to consider on the base model -- will this be a deal breaker, with the need to go up a grade? Perhaps so!

If they made a matte black version Marques would cry tears of joy

I actually love that they have the chin. Both visually and practically. I often have to kinda rotate the computer to access the usb ports in the back and also need some support when sticking stuff in to those ports(I change the stuff there quite often because I do photography). The chin gives you a safe place to touch the front side of hhe screen without leaving fingerprints to the glass.

The design does look does the way I think. After all, it was a stunning, honest review! Really appreciate it!

The G3 still remains my favourite iMac design. I still remember the first time I saw those computers at my elementary school computer lab. Everything was translucent and colourful, it felt like I was inside of the Teletubbies house lol (but no srsly, it does feel like that).

I said this before.. I love the colors, but I think that Apple missed an opportunity to create a great iMac... What they could have done is given the mac mini internals like they did, but maybe give it a re-imagined design of the G4 iMacl (Lampstand).. That would have been even more amazing and Apple would not have needed to do much in terms of R&D.

I've always associated Apple with premium looking designs so to see them come out with something like this, let's just say I have an error in my brain whenever I look at it. I think it would've looked better if they kept the Apple logo in the middle on the front, at least keeping the bezel was a good choice though.

Would like to see how it performs against the 8-core 27 inch Intel iMac with the 5500xt 8gb. My guess is the 27 inch will still beat it in performance and has the advantage of adding ram. Next year I expect Apple to show no mercy with a 27 inch M1.

Great video. I guess I disagree with you about the chin. I like it. Since Apple is emphasizing color, I do think it helps to make it look stylish. Also, if your monitor isn’t directly in front of a wall, as yours is, the thinness likewise helps with the overall aesthetics.

For what I do, I would be all in, but not until I can get a color matching numeric keyboard. I will certainly wait for the M1 Pro to get into the 27" version which hopefully will come in the pastels of the first 2 models. Do you think they will do that, put an M1 Pro or even a Max into a 27" iMac or do you think these will be reserver for the iMac Pro's? I think all flavors of the screen should be colorful :-)

New teach tubers seem to all have watched the same skillshare course on how to make a YouTube channel and all have the same overdone set designs

I remember seeing the old iMac ad multiple times back in 1999. It was also shown in India on our local cable network. Honestly I haven't seen a plenty of them around even at that time. It looked way into the future, the impression we got back then was what is like seeing a Tesla.

Nice presentation. I think it would be good to note that the external power brick keeps virtually all the heat this thing generates away from the unit. Heat=wear and tear. My 21.5" iMac is a late 2009, and for its age it still works great. I got the new M1 here for the speed, and because sooner or later the old one will buy the farm. But I figure that this one, with the silicone processor, should last forever.

The imac was realesed in 1999 as a home desktop computer it had a decent amount of storage and had many generations just like this one

I was using a G5 for Graphic Design, nearly 20 years ago. This machine is more than capable for professional use. Unless you work at Pixar.

I really like that first imac color back in time, with that nice transportation grip, for having it portable (as you said) in the underground or the park or the riverside for listening to my music and having some very important thing done. I always hated external power bricks. Just why do they offer these? Weird! So, you will get a mac mini for $799, plus a display for $300, making (added with my iphone😳😄) $1600! Nice

I love the green one but apart from the eye candy I feel apple has been stripping it’s product every generation, giving us less and less. I am no power user, like intense video editing or 3D but I still use a 2007 intel iMac everyday, a G4 iMac and a PowerMac MDD and I am satisfied for the most part. When I look at the new products all I see is more profit for the company and less for the customer. Less ports, less reliability, less compatibility, no drives. I have many usb accessories and firewire hdd and now I can’t use them unless I buy dongles after dongles. They cut corners all the time telling us it’s better, I think otherwise. Jobs and Ive didn’t create the iMac with a bunch of hubs and dongles connected to it. It goes against the simplicity and aesthetic of the original product. Non adjustable height for the iMac is a very weak aspect. They make them all shiny and colourful but I would like to see some real engineering like the arm on my G4 iMac. Instead they just repackaged the same thing basically. I am disappointed, Apple is not what it used to be.

@John Martino The thinness will impress plenty of people. I'm not sure about the chin, but the overall thinness shows a "next generation" computer. Packing all that tech in something that looks like a monitor is impressive. You can't make an all-in-one like that with AMD or Intel technology. In a way, it's a technology showcase.

I don't think he understands what Apple said about their vision to create a desktop that looks so thin that it almost look non-existent (think about holographic displays or a future full VR desktop experience.)

@micomen They removed the button but made a notch making sure any stock photo of an app with a notch can easily be recognized as an iPhone; as the industry moves towards all screen with no bezels, apple will lose a lot of brand recognition. I'm not talking about recognizing their devices on the street but in stock photos and unrelated media which is free aspirational marketing for them.

I bought the new iMac 24-inch iMac with the M1 as soon as available to order (before it was available to see in store), and hated it enough to return it. The screen feels small, and you pay a fortune for "hard-disk" storage. What happened to "hard-disks" getting cheaper and bigger? It never occurred to me that my 10-year old MacBook Pro would have more hard-disk space than the base model 24-inch iMac. I also hate that the screen of the new iMac is so far up from the desk and cannot be adjusted. A higher resolution screen does nothing for me, but make everything smaller. (Anyone over 40 with bifocal or progressive eyeglass lenses will understand)

I like everything about iMac M1 except that it is fully dependent on the power source. In cases of a power outage, it will automatically shut off. I am worried that frequent power outages might damage the computer. What do you think?

I actually like that the old iMac tapered off towards the top. It was unique, visually stunning and like you said - no one cares how thick it is when its on your desk.

Agreed but I think Apple wanted something totally new with this. Sticking with the taper would've been too familiar to the last gen - even with all other changes. They also seem to be leaning into "all-flat" designs lately; starting with iPad Pro in '18, iPhone 12 last year, new iMac, and based on leaks - new MacBooks coming soon.

I was in 5th grade when we finally got the colorful MACS at our school and they were the latest thing ever. Before that, we were taking a typing class and also drawing with a pencil on the old mac. I feel so old. We were told, we were one of the lucky schools to be able to get those. Now I bought a nostalgic blue mac & love it.

I think one of the advantage being have a chin on the Desktop computer, Which I could carry the computer holding on the chin, instead holding on the LED display. In order to prevent to damage the LED display. That’s a desktop with much more mobility than any others.

Does Apple realise 90% of us just want a space grey version with black bezel?

yeah I also like the simplicity of the gray version, went with the blue though because it matches my room better. arriving in a week :p

I really was excited when they announced they'd come out with these computers and I was so close to buying it but then I saw your video and also agreed with everything you said plus one more thing. 1. I hate the chin so much. The whole front should have been a clean screen; and/or 2. The white frame could have just been the same colour of the the computer; or 3. The white frame could have been an LED display that allowed users to change colours. In conclusion, I don't like the fact that I have to pick one colour when I like many of them! I wish the computer could have been designed in a way that looked still modern but could have been LED or something that allows the buyer to change colours. Just my personal opinion.

You’re right about it not being for your demographic. When it came out the first thing I did was tell my sister who has kids learning from home to get one, and my mom who works remotely who has the older one. I’m personally waiting for that MacBook Pro 16” M1
