What I dislike the most are hospital beds in an opera stage, and you see them frequently.

This voice and interpretation deserve a beautiful setting. It is not the case. Do the singers like this kind of thing or they accept it because there is no alternative?

Se I labbri nostri tacquero dagli occhi il cor parlò.

This aria is much more difficult than anyone could thought. Congratulations to Lisette Oropesa for her amazing work and talent. Brilliant performance!

No one I am aware of, except Sutherland, could make such a natural, and sustained, trill at the end of this aria...until now. That alone got my full attention. A very gifted singer in a world where they are growing increasingly rare. I have only discovered her, and I wonder...does she have the high staccati?
Vor yearJ.J. Schlachtfeld
She does have the high staccati. They aren't as easy as Sutherland's perhaps, but there are a couple of renditions where you can indeed hear her sing them. She has a high Eb (as the cadenza in this rendition confirms) , but I'd dare say that she feels most comfortable up to a high D.

Reminds me a lot of Callas, I mean that as a compliment, she takes risks, pushing limits. Amazing performance

Although far from being my favorite singer, I have to recognize that this is a good rendition of this aria. Her lyric voice fits this music like a glove. The trills are there, beautifully done, but the stacatti are missing. As one commenter said, she should resist the temptation to sing heavier roles in order to keep her voice as healthy as possible.
Vor yearJ.J. Schlachtfeld
She does have the staccati. They do not come as easy to her as to other singers, but there are a couple of videos on YouTube where she sings them. I think this one was rather a stylistic choice, in order to keep the fluidity of the aria going, aided of course by her show-stopping trills.

I think so many opera houses have to save money and therefore go with shitty productions. Or they just strive to bring "something modern" into it. 😒
Vor yearArt Danks
Oropesa is indeed an amazing singer, in an era where truly great singers have been so few and far between. She is definitely a tremendous gift to opera. That being said, I'm now going to discuss the huge "pink elephant" in the room, that no one has even mentioned! What's with this really bizarre production??? Are these shots from when Gilda is actually singing Caro Nome? If so, what in the hell is it? Cuz it sure has absolutely nothing to do with the opera Rigoletto! Can someone please enlighten me?
Vor 2 yearsTim Meijers
@Mark Atwood Visceral is exactly the right word! I don't know if you know this, but there is a recording available on the website of the dutch public broadcaster, here: https://www.nporadio4.nl/ntroperalive/uitzendingen/526376:2017-05-27-ntr-opera-live
Vor yearMark Atwood
@Tim Meijers I actually went to see this production twice as well! I flew in from London just to see it and then I stayed an extra couple of days to catch it again. What you said of the production was exactly right. I found the entire experience completely visceral. Generally, I am not that interested in modern productions, but there was something about this that just made complete sense. Not only were the performers were all completely at the top of their game, probably the best cast I have ever heard, but the production gave a real sense of place and horror. The masks showed how Rigoletto was completely obsessed with the Duke and the walls tearing apart were him breaking under the loss of his child. I was so floored at how such a concept and a modern production really worked. It made me realize that not everything needs to be so traditional to make sense. You just need a fleshed out concept and incredible performers.
Vor yearTim Meijers
Rigoletto is in a mental institution, and he is haunted by his personal ghosts, the whole thing is sort of a confused flashback. The Duca, Gilda, and others crash onto the scene through holes in the wall. Rigoletto goes more and more nuts. Did you see the production? I went to see it twice. The cast was really amazing, and - for me at least - the production worked. It generally made sense, the story was still easy to follow and it allowed the drama to shine. Not everybody liked it, sure, and it wasn't traditional, but I think it was interesting, effective and - importantly! - highly moving.

Seldom we hear sopranos who really apply the bel canto technique. The rest of them are just show off.
Vor 2 yearsKira Braun, Soprano
Zuzana Holičová I think it is her tone quality and also that of her vibrato - her spin is gorgeous!! It is not an overdone vibrato which we hear too much of these days. And also yes, her trills are executed perfectly. The other thing is the way she colours her sound - it’s pure and she can make it dark or light...and OHHH those pianissimi!!
Vor yearZuzana Holičová
Hello, it's everything very interesting but I just don't understand it very well. What is the difference between her and other sopranos. I believe there is difference because of course I hear she sings rarely beautiful but I don't understand why is it so. You people seem to know what you're talking about and I always feel lost because I cannot really tell what's the difference. I probably didn't say it very well but I 'd be very pleased if you would explain to me what are the differences. :)

Homoclassicus I have always thought a great trill has always been rare. The great ones were natural and improved upon. However now most singers don’t even try and achieve one and some of the attempts are just that, an attempt. This is indeed a trill. One I haven’t heard since Sutherland retired. Those are just my thoughts on what I’ve been listening to over the years.
