Correction on Mauhur. He gives a +1/+1 on top of whatever number of Orc creature you Amassed so when you first created that Orc token it should have been a 3/3. The counter goes on the Amassed Orc and not on Mauhur.

Solid advice from a fellow player. Every ability can be googled if you dont understand it. If the ability or how to use it isnt entirely clear, just come to an agreement with your dad on whats fair and makes the most sense and play on. Dont get hung up on the small things.

Not sure if they missed this but at 16:24, Frodo should have gotten a +1+1 counter, which would have been very relevant for the next turn.

Thanks for the video. My wife and I just got that starter set and learning Magic. Fun to see those cards being played. I have to say, the Mordor deck is much tougher than the Hobbit deck, seems very tough to beat the Mordor deck.

It's great to see more people getting into MtG from this set! One thing I noticed, everyone has already mentioned the misplay with Mauhur and the Army counters, but at 1:03:26, Don could have sacrificed the targeted Food token in response to the Fires of Orthanc and actually caused the spell to fail (If a spell has no legal targets on the battlefield when it tries to resolve, it fails to resolve and goes to the graveyard without doing anything, defined by Rule 608.2b. Fires of Orthanc targets one thing, and if that thing isn't in play when the spell resolves, the spell just doesn't happen). Thus his creatures would have been able to block and the game would have gone very differently.

They also forgot that the Oliphaunt would have given +2/+0 and trample to another one of the attacking creatures. This would have put him down to 2 life, not 4. Additionally, the artifact bow that gets brought into the game next has the text "when comes into play, attach to" which means that it could be immediately equipped without needing to pay the additional 2 mana.

This was fun and helpful, will probably pick up the starter kit now. If I could make a suggestion, having the person’s name somewhere on their side would be a good addition to make it stick in people’s minds

53:58 Don should have fed the dogs with the two food tokens so they would be 4/4 and their attack would eventually destroy the trebuchet.

1:13:00 the Goblin would’ve got +2 from the Oliphant as well I’ve seen the other mistakes mentioned in comments but not that one. No judgement though, you can play for ages and still not get everything right all the time.

19:20 correction, Frodo and Mauhur both have equal stats but Frodo would be impervious to battle damage on his players given turn do there was no risk in Frodo attacking

More of a strategy thing: Rosie is extremely good and probably should’ve been kept around instead of watch dogs. Every time a token is created she places a +1/+1 token on another creature

MTG is the Best game ever. Plus i love it when i teach it to someone or see it being taught and see them enjoy it for the very first time. Making it about LOTR just makes it more engaging and it'll most likely draw New People to the MTG community. And if they come from the LOTR community, all the better!! Welcome!!

Mathura does not work the way you think. What should have happened is that your Orc army should have had an additional +1/+1 counter. So instead of 2/2 it would be 3/3

When you have Fires of Mount Doom Can can you exile the top card card and play it more than once in a turn if you have the mana to do so or does the enchantment only work once a turn or become tapped? Thanks

At 47:13 when you placed counters on Muahur that is not how it works your orc army should've simply had an additional 1/1 counter on it making it a 3/3. As always reading the card explains the card but sometimes it's a bit confusing!

I don't mean to nitpick here but a few minutes later the guy playing the selesnya deck cast generous ent when he simply did not have enough lands

@@joegibson1566 I thought this at first, too, but no, he had the six lands he needed available. He moves one of them (a tree) off the screen before turning over the remaining five.

A truly gentleman’s game

Im playing w these 2 decks and the mordor deck is just crazy overpowered. Gondor needs luck to have its synergy even work, getting the correct cards in the correct order to get benefits and even then, all food does is give u life, whereas the mordor deck can synergize as soon as u play ur cards, plus most if its card are on rate or even above, meaning u pay 4 mana u get a 4/4 and usually w an ability. You pay 2 mana and u get a 2/1 that makes a 1/1 when it dies, meaning its above rate. U get 3 mana for a 1/1 flyer that summons a 2/2. While for gondor u get 2 mana for a 1/1, or 3 mana for a 3/2 w no abilities, or a 2/3 that gives food token that ull need to pay to activate, or need to be lucky to have cards already in play to synergize w the food token, not to mention mordor having relatively higher numbers of removal that makes keeping thise enablers hard.

18:31 If Frodo attacked and Mauhur defended, Frodo would kill Mauhur, but Mauhur would not kill Frodo, precisely because of Frodo's ability to be invulnerable during his player's turn. He's only vulnerable during the opponent's turn. Plus, thanks to Rosie Cotton's 2nd ability, Frodo should have gotten a +1/+1 counter, so he would have been a 3/3 anyway.

He forgot to put tokens on the named orc also when he put tokens on the orc army.

This is so cool that you did this! I will say that I have independently been a huge mtg fan and a huge LOTR fan and was super nervous of the two being combined. But it has ended up being really cool seeing the two combined and the set actually pays proper homage to a lot larger part of the legendarium than anticipated.

It's a travesty of fantasy history. What do you think Tolkien would say of his entire lifespan of work being reduced to a stupid card game. You must be insane to praise this terrible game. 😮

Can someone explain some things to me? When Rose enters the Battlefield (at 16:32), she creates a food token, why didn't she put a +1/+1 on Frodo, as it says a food token creation does that? And (at 47:14), Mauhur gets his power. Now why doesn't he get +3/+3? He would get +2/+2 from orc army, but it says "that many plus one", why doesn't Mauhur become +5/+5 then (his 2/2 plus three +1/+1 counters)?

They are playing wrong. Mauhur doesn't get the +1/+1 counters, he only makes the orc army gets an additional +1/+1 counter every time. And they just forgot the Rose ability.

Mauhur's ability doesn't work like that. You would be putting 3 counters on the Army, not 2 on Mauhur himself. 47:00

I used to play Magic back in high school circa 96-97. I haven’t played it since. The LOTR set has made me want to play again and introduce it to my daughter. This video was very helpful and brought back the memories about the rules I thought I had long lost.

After 26 years of playing magic, I had to make the decision to quit due to the business practices of WotC. I'm disgusted with the way the game has gone and it saddens me to see them continuing their predatory practices on new people.

I'm so disappointed about The One Ring already being pulled out by an unknown person. Not even a month since this cards came out and already the most difficult card has been found. I think they never put that card in the boxes, they just announced the One just to have orders and orders of Collector and Gift boxsets.

A massive amount of boxes have been opened since launch, even I openned 20 Collector Boosters. Every LGS in my area is now either sold out or damn near sold out of Collector Boosters, everyone suspected that WOTC was hiding the ring in a later print run of the set to drag out the hunt and boost sales, but it was surprisingly released in the first run and was confirmed to have been opened by some average joe up in canada who bought a couple packs for fun. All things considered WOTC handled the rollout of the set with a lot more decency than anyone expected.

Great video. I do have one observation, though. The explanation given at 46:46 about Mauhur's ability is incorrect. It's not that Mauhur gets the +1/+1 counters. The orc army gets the counters given by Dunland Crebain plus another +1/+1 counter. Making it a 3/3 instead of a 2/2.

Scrolled a bit too far down the comments and saw the disappointing but not unexpected complaints about how some of the characters are depicted. Personally, if the Aragon doesn’t look like Viggo Mortensen, then it makes no difference to me how they look. I understand why they didn’t use the film cast likenesses though and that’s fine it’s not a deal breaker

Can you explain what exactly has been changed? I think the flavor is generally an A+ for the most part.

@@jordanb7304 the only thing that jumps to mind is they made some characters described as light skinned, dark skinned, like Aragorn, for example. Otherwise everything seems fairly faithful to Tolkien’s writings.

@@jordanb7304 the moment Christopher Tolkien dropped dead everyone started to pick at his father's legacy like vultures. It doesn't matter if it's one obvious change or several, from TV shows to.card games they have no right to justifiably do such a thing. Tolkien was very clear about how he felt on canon work. And you know it. After Rings of Power, any change should be regarded as a threat waiting to have more change in the future, and all for ends that have nothing to do with Tolkien. Even Wizards of the Coast and the creators of Rings of Power are very clear as to why they're doing with this in their explanations, and it has nothing to do with him. The answer HAS to be no. This is wrong.

@@ReformedSauron I just don't agree with the ideology of always being unchanging and always being unmoving. Its not productive. I think there can certainly be a time and place to be extremely accurate in regards to history and truths so I would never say its not useful or not to be respected. I just think there are certain contexts in which that is more appropriate and more effective. With that said adaptations of the original works should probably be as faithful as possible within the constraints of whatever medium something is being adapted to. But to expect nothing to change with something that is being adapted to a different medium is no feasible, there must be some amount of changes, somethings left out or changed to fit whatever this new thing is better and that's okay. Its not trying to be the same thing, it is something different and new inspired by the original. The original will always be the original and nothing new can take that away from it. I am by no means a Tolkien or Middle Earth expert, I just really appreciate the depth of his worldbuilding, his process, and the uniqueness to his stories and world. I think its awesome and inspirational. But I'm not an expert. I think the MtG adaptation did a lot of things right and actually showed me things I've never heard about or seen and I think that awesome and valuable. It gives me reason to explore more about the original works and world. Rings of Power felt a lot worse in execution to me for example.
