Watch the full speech of King Charles as the monarch switched between fluent German and English in a historic address.
King Charles III made history on Thursday 30 March, becoming the first British monarch to address the Bundestag, Germany’s federal parliament.
The monarch delivered the opening part of his speech in German before switching to English to share how important visits to the country were for his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.
Charles then continued his address, switching between German and English multiple times, and received a standing ovation after he finished.
His wife Camilla, Queen Consort, was watching on from the Bundestag floor.

@reverseflashes I didn't compare him to his mother. He's a diplomatic gift , Although I recall the Queen was fluent in French, now that you mentioned her. I only heard Philip's fluent German once during a video of an interview. I suspect that was not a language he used for the British public often, especially so soon after WW2. That was the p.r., to erase everything that was not British. Charles spoke in German during a public address which was something his father could not do . Everyone has come a long way.

His whole family are literally German, so obviously he speaks it. The house of Windsor was called the house of Saxe-Coburg and Gothe and spent most of their time in Hannover (Up until the unification of Germany in 1870) and was called as such, embracing their German ancestry until 1917 when King George V (His grandfather literally didn't even speak English) changed it for obvious reasons... Doesn't really show anything, just that he can speak both of his native tongues tbh.

@Qba Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was the name of Queen Elizabeth’s family. Price Philip and Charles are Battenbergs, which became translated as Montbatten. Saxe-Coburg und Gotha was changed to Windsor by Elizabeth’s grandfather around the time of WWI. When Charles was born, it was decided that he would carry the name of Windsor from his mother rather Montbatten from his father.

@p0llenp0ny Actually, Elizabeth's mother was mostly English from what I've read, as was Diana, so they're all very mixed. Even if they hadn't changed the name to Windsor, the name Saxe-Coburg and Gotha would have died with George VI.

However, he rehearsed it well and you can tell he makes efforts to show respect. For a person that doesn't speak our language at all, he is doing a really great job. Don't forget that holding a speech in German is for the English like holding a speech in Latvian or Korean is for the average German. From the point of view of an Englishman, we Germans do speak an exotic language. His father, Prince Philip, was actually top-notch fluent in German. I've seen interviews that highly impressed me.

Berlijn feels like home to me, I can't imagine why, but I just feel part of it. There were these groups of men in traditional dress, special shoes and socks and lederhosen. Up close, they just looked incredible, not a stitch out of place. And the architecture is fairytale beautiful. The Forests around Stuttgard are so sumptuous. The accommodation pristine. The food ... even sold on the street... is five star good. Even at petrol stations there are buffets that would be in place in a good hotel. And the Germans, at least those I met, were just lovely and helpful. My only dislike was the omnipresent smell of sausage in Berlijn's super efficient and on time metro.

Fluent German? He reads what‘s in his script and one can easily tell that he is not familiar with quite a few words. Be that as it may. It's the gesture that counts. So, thank you very much, Charles! Besides, his German might actually be better than Olaf Scholz‘s English. I find it a bit embarrassing that German politicians tend to speak German abroad, even where English is largely spoken. Should become mandatory for them to speak at least two foreign languages fluently. Wouldn’t be a big loss if that reduced their number. 😮

His father spoke German as a first language. The thing is Charles served in the Navy so he didn't get to develop it, had he been in the army he'd be fluent in whatever dialect they speak near Hannover

his pronounciation is way better than just reading off a page, even if its not direct spelling. The guy learned german either early in life or had an amazing accent coach. the words he struggles with are not the type of words u use in casual conversation

I wish that American presidents had the same grasp of history that European leaders seem to have. I see European leaders talking about the Second World War very often and I do wish our Presidents would do the same.

King Charles seems to have a lot more class and intelligence than people have given him credit for. To an American, this impresses me quite a bit. This speech makes me think that Charles has more on the ball than either Biden or Trump.

His father spoke it as mother tongue actually, so in theory he could have learnt it fluently from him, which probably didn't happen. But he must have been taught both French and German to know how to pronounce it well enough so it can be understood.

@A human Yes, it’s strange, but it’s just a form of address that recognises position like calling someone Mr. or Ms. In the USA, I believe people say “Mr. President” when his name is Mr. Biden. Anyway, I probably got it wrong. I should have used initial capital letters, I think.
