My parents told me to never lock my door just in case there's an emergency and they need to get in for one reason or another. My brother had a seizure at 16 so whenever they hear a thud they're instantly calling whoever is in the other side of the house it came from as confirmation they're OK. They still gave me my privacy. Not locked? They knocked if it was the middle of the day and lightly knocked if it was later at night and either waited for my answer or for no answer after a few seconds. Lovely people, gave my privacy, but no locked doors just for emergency purposes.

My door broke when I was little and my parents never bothered to fix it because they didn't see a reason to. When I grew into a teenager, I got walked in on while trying to put in tampon in! Embarrassing! I got a part time job and replaced the door myself and had the only key to the lock. Privacy was nice, but I learned that slamming my bedroom door to end an argument was sweet satisfaction.

I agree that kids aren’t technically equal to there parent because a child’s brain is not fully developed, but that does not mean you cannot treat them as an equal in other situations. I remember when I was in high school I loved to read and would often get scolded or judged for wanting to read. So one night I was reading secretly to not upset my mom, but this also led to my mom thinking I was texting some guy outside waiting to sneak out because I kept on hiding my phone whenever she passed my room. I never did anything that should have warranted that distrust, and my family should have been encouraging me to read and not put down a healthy interests. I was a child but should have been encouraged and treated respectfully, not like a lesser human that cannot think for themselves. I truly think we should be able to respect each other no matter the age, parents can put there foot down for something that will be detrimental to their child’s health, but to treat a child as lesser at every turn will cause them to lash out or even fold into themselves as they are growing into adults themselves. Parenting is a fine line that will be crossed sometimes and I love my mom, so everyone should try their best but one small mistake does not make you a bad parent.

My mom used to tell me I couldn't sleep in my underwear because my dad could see me. And I always wondered what either of them would be doing in my room in the middle of the night. I figured it out when they took all my books at 1 am because I was grounded. So I started locking my door and sleeping in my underwear again. Got the door kicked down (by my mom) and the blankets torn off me.

I wasn't allowed to lock my door when i was little, so I barricaded it with all my stuff or made some sort of string trap thing to keep it from opening. It drove my parents nuts and they eventually stopped barging in like this guy seems to enjoy doing.
