some of TS Eliot: The Dry Salvages Fare forward, travellers! Not escaping from the past Into indifferent lives, or into any future; You are not the same people who left that station Or who will arrive at any terminus, While the narrowing rails slide together behind you; And on the deck of the drumming liner Watching the furrow that widens behind you, You shall not think 'the past is finished' Or 'the future is before us'. At nightfall, in the rigging and the aerial, Is a voice descanting (though not to the ear, The murmuring shell of time, and not in any language) Fare forward, you who think that you are voyaging; You are not those who saw the harbour Receding, or those who will disembark. Here between the hither and the farther shore While time is withdrawn, consider the future And the past with an equal mind. At the moment which is not of action or inaction You can receive this: "on whatever sphere of being The mind of man may be intent At the time of death" - that is the one action (And the time of death is every moment) Which will fructify in the lives of others: And do not think of the fruit of action. Fare Forward. O voyagers, O seamen, You who came to port, and you whose bodies Will suffer the trial and judgement of the sea, Or whatever event, this is your real destination." So Krishna, as when he admonished Arjuna On the field of battle. Not fare well, But fare forward, voyagers.

So... You mean to tell me that you totally CAN make an album... that's just you dicking around on a guitar... and not only have it be a creative masterpiece... but have it sound beautiful??? Sign me the fuck up, dude. I need to get into piano improv more anyway.

If you study John, his body of work, this isn't "dicking around on a guitar" He had great purpose with this, he was paying homage to his spiritual guide, his mentor. I understand what you meant but I want others to understand when John was coming from when he did this.

John Martyn was hardly ever one man though, most his Jazz orientated albums feature many different artists. As for Fahey like The Doors? Pointless to compare artists like that, Faheys music doesn't exactly have the same purpose as The Doors music now does it?

John Fahey and Sandy Bull explored subtle spins on drones and repetition; both came upon a curious crossroads of blues, country, mid & far eastern music and avant classical (Reich, Glass). John Fahey and Sand Bull both reportedly led lousy lives. Download John Jeremiah Sullivan's essay "Unknown Bards" for an interesting depressing look at poor old John Fahey in his declining years.

@Jim Rader I think they might have played together. There was one point in The Great Santa Barbara Oil Slick, can't remember when, where he says that he's gonna get off stage after this so Sandy can come on and do a set. Don't know of any collaborations between them tho.

@Bruce Becker well to my knowledge s. bull put out only six or seven albums whereas fahey put out something like twenty so right there is a legacy. as far as the music itself goes, it's a matter of taste or inclination; they werent doing quite the same thing. both players flirted with any form playable on guitar but bull's heart was always in the ganges and fahey's in the delta. did they ever even meet? can find no info per contact between these two musicians, if any.

@Jason Elstad Do you have any idea how vast the amount of guitar players is? Hundreds of millions, maybe a billion people play the guitar. It's the second best selling instrument in the world. I'd say it's completely fair to say most guitarists are incapable of making an album within 3 ballparks of this with their guitar alone.
