It is a great video which you have produced on Johan Cruijff. I only think that it would be great if there was a complete tactical analyse which he had used at Ajax and Barcelona. Besides that, I think that it would be interesting to analyse the influence which Rinus Michels had on Johan Cruijff, and the (tactical) influence which Johan Cruijff had on other managers like Ronald Koeman, Josep Guardiola, Wim Jonk and also on his own son Jordi Cruijff. I also think that Johan Cruijff had a big influence on the 4-1-2-3 and his view on the gymnestic importance by the development of (youth)players. I would love to see a documentary size video in which these mentioned points would be covered.

The 1978 Netherlands team showed the world Johan Cruyff's DM formation. Even today, the championship match between the Dutch and the Argentine would glue you to your seat. At the last second of regulation time, the Dutch hit the goalpost and the match went into overtime and they lost 3 : 1.

I think barcelona now days can not play Cruyff styles like Pep because although busquests drop back as a deffender between two CBs,De jong has being used as a LCM who Maybe should come back deeper to make the fast access to forwards whenever opponents play high on the pitch. On the other hand like other possessioning tactics RB & LBs like Kimmich, roberto, marcelo, alba & plenty more cut inside and try to create space and playmaking on the wide areas for CMs which force rivals to spread up widely so barca needs creative middfeilders who can join on the wings too or replace Right and left full backs on the wings when attacking. I think Purely wingers or strikers do not suitable for barca anymore. Some players such as Lautaro can be as False 9 and final target man togheter.

Cruyff always made sure he had a Laudrup type of on the front line that can beat a defender 1v1 which shakes up the opponent's back line. And note that Guardiola only had to move no more than 9 meters side to side. Furthermore Bakero in front of Guardiola had to be no more than 9meters away from Guardiola. Furthermore the two outside mids were not allowed to be more than 15meters from each other....

Funny thing about Cruijff is that he to learned it with Michels and Michels learned subquestly the basis of Total Football from a Jack Reynolds, an English manager who first introduced it to the world. It's curious to see the evolution throughout the decades and how Reynold's ideas turned out in the so called dutch Total Football and then Tiki Taka.

Vor 2 Monate
Han Solo
Han Solo

IlManaka No not really. Reynolds had some basic ideas about players being able to fulfill more than one role on the field. But he could never have imagined the way Rinus Michels and Cruyff revolutionised the way footall is played both on and off the pitch. Michels took those older ideas MUCH further than anyone before him could ever have imagined possible. And Michels and Cruff also added so much more to it. Their philospohy truly was unique and never before seen or thought of in that way. Reynolds was just a small part of many inspirations nothing more. Just like Reynold was inspired by others before him. In the end everyone who ever achieved or invented anything took inspiration form others. That is the way it has always been, not just in football. The way the Dutch 'total football' philosophy has forever changed football as we know it has very little to do with the ideas of Reynolds but has everything to do with the the revolutionary vision and also the balls to follow up on that vision by Rinus Michels and Cruyff. And when you look at Dutch culture of the late sixties and early seventies this footballing revolution could have only started in the Netherlands. Not anywhere else. The true creators of Total Football are Michels and Cruyff. Not anyone else.

Very good video. However, I have to correct you on a few facts. Koeman, Laudrup, Stoichkov and Romario never ever played in the same lineup. Back then there was a rule limiting 3 foreigners on the field at the same time. As a result, Laudrup often stayed on the bench, as Cryuff preferred to play the other 3. It was one of the reason why Laudrup left for Real M (the other reason being his contract and salary). Laudrup also never ever played on the left side of the diamond midfield. Before Romario, he played either the False 9 role or on the wing. Once Barca bought Romario, Cruyff moved to using the traditional 4-3-3 formation more often. Before that it was the 3-4-3 used more often. For example, in the 1992 final vs Sampdoria it was 3-4-3 (Subi - Koeman, Nando, Ferrer - Guardiola, Eusebio, Juan Carlos, Bakero - Salinas, Stoichkov, Laudrup), while in 1994 CL final it was 4-3-3 ( Subi - Ferrer, Koeman, Nadal, Sergi - Guardiola, Amor, Bakero - Stoichkov, Bergiristain, Romario). Guardiola rarely left the middle channel, so he didn't really cover the fullbacks/wide defenders (Ferrer, Sergi). He did cover Koeman when needed though. Pep was the defensive pivot. Bakero was the attacking pivot. His role was slightly different thatn typical attacking midfielder. He often played with back to goal, redistributing the ball, playing simple 1 or 2 touch football, and then surging into the penalty box to score or win second balls. He was not tall, but he had a good jump on him and headed the ball very well. Johan Cruyff is the most influential person in modern football. He influenced the game as a player, as a coach, as director, honorary president, a mentor and commentator. Ajax, Barca, Spain and Holland owe him a lot. His philosophy continues to live through the work of Pep Guardiola, who surpassed him in terms of success in winning trophies. I'm sure Johan is proud watching from heaven his "adopted" son.

Cruyff is a legend. Many more coaches can benefit from applying similar principles but the risk involved in playing this way without hours and hours of training is high. Mistakes will be made and coaches might feel the pressure to revert to a more conservative, defensive game. People don't realise that this team went 3/4 years without a European cup. Imagine a Barca coach today who gets 4 years to win the trophy? Cruyff's side got lucky on many occasions in crucial games but this was probably more to do with the fact that they stuck to their principles.
