They are wealthy and want you to have a good time too, I don't think any real friend with that amount of wealth would give a single F**k about getting an expensive dish. Thats an etiquette thing to do honestly. On someone else’s dime, never go expensive. In my opinion.

When I go to a restaurant and I know someone else is probably paying I look at the cheapest then go one or two up from that usually. Then I ask if they want to split a dessert, usually they say no so I just say I couldn't possibly have it to myself and put the menu back. Usually they'll insist I get one to myself but I refuse politely and say thankyou for offering. When I know I'm buying I always get something nice and insist the other person/people get whatever they want. If no one orders starters or entrees I usually go to town on sides and wine for the whole table, then after the main meal I immediately ask the server what's the best dessert you have today? Then I look around the table at looks of approval and say we'll all have that then, if anyone says they're full I say get one to try and I'll finish it if you don't because I'm sure it's only small. Usually they finish it but if they don't I just let it sit in front of them until they ask me if I want it. It's the way I was raised. I very rarely invite my friends out to eat because 2 of them are chefs but when I do I expect them to get whatever they want because I can't compete with their dinner parties and I feel bad for making them work.
