In this video I am showing you alternatives to Jesmonite. I never knew when I started my Jesmonite journey that it is not available in the USA. I wanted to show you the results that you can get from alternatives, using Plaster and Cement.

In the USA you have a similar product called Aqua Resin. It is not identical but similar in use. I will have more information to share with you on this very soon.

Jesmonite is a pain to get into the US, extremely expensive. I currently use perfect cast (slightly stronger than regular gypsum plaster). Perfect Cast takes pigments well, but I still prefer jesmonite. And I like cement for pots that don't need color.

Really enjoyed the video! I am just wondering if it’s bad to use cement compared to jesmonite when it comes to sustainability and the environment? Jesmonite is available here but it is 10 times more the price compared to cement..

@Claire’s Crafty Corner thank you for the reply Claire 😍 I did some experimenting with cement, the only issue is that the cement takes almost 20 hours to cure which is a long time.. I found quick curing cement but it’s grey which I cannot use. I thought about trying with plaster of Paris instead and would like to ask you if that’s as eco friendly to use as cement or? 😅

Heyyy Patti ... thank you so much xx Jesmonite is more eco than cement however, I think Cement is still an acceptable medium and is used in every day life to build houses etc ... so I personally wouldn't worry about the difference between them ... they are both way more ECO friendly than Epoxy xxx ❤❤❤

Great video, I just found your channel on Google and love it, what kind of cement do you use? I've been trying with blue circle but it's darker than those I have seen on YouTube videos. I'm considering white cement but the price is higher than the normal one. Could you recommend any brand? Thanks

Something you didn’t mention that I thought would have been the biggest difference between them - Is the plaster of Paris one really brittle? I would expect that pot to crumble if you applied pressure on either side, dropped it etc., but I’d expect the cement one to be a bit more durable, with the jesmonite one being the most durable by far. Is that the case? Or has plaster of Paris come that far since I was a kid 🤔

Thank you for suggesting the pva then varnish because I started to use plaster and I didn’t know what can I seal it with since it soaks everything on surface. So I started to use elmer’s multi purpose glue then spray it with lacquer. Looks pretty good! I should try varnish but does it show the brush strokes clearly? How to prevent it? Thank you again Claire and Nutty.

Vor 3 Monate
Nutty Insomniac
Nutty Insomniac

As plaster casts can't get wet because the water would weaken them, I'm actually assuming that they'd have to be sealed! Plus, it is a porous material, so the first layer, at least, would be absorbed into it. I'd probably try pva first, to seal the pores, then go over with a varnish. But that's just me!
