⛩ In this video I’m gonna show you guys a couple of pieces that use 7,9th-chords. I got the impression especially Japanese composers love to use them. Those chords can be extremely helpful if you want to create ambient music or make simple chords more emotional and interesting! And of course we’re playing around with the inversions.
⛩ A chord voicing containing a minor 2nd interval like this really adds some friction and gives those chords a characteristic sound!
I have no sheet music for the Yu-Gi-Oh! pieces. Figured them out by ear.

Good luck playing tradition Cuban music, or Stax/Vault r'n'b with enriched chords. It would, the way the progressions are, sound soft and schmaltzy. I myself love writing with 9/11/13s etc but a triad has a fantastic, straight and solid attitude to it.

Leonard Cohen didn’t like 7ths or 9ths. You won’t find many on any of his albums. He even wrote a song called the Jazz Police which was inspired by him constantly telling his band, which at the time was comprised of mostly jazz musicians, to stick to simple triads and avoid 7ths and 9ths.

Great playing ! Love that style of writing / voicing to bits. I think it is such a signature 'japanese' thing for several reasons: French late 1800s early 20th classical stuff (mostly Debussy & Ravel) has tons of those colors and is very popular in japan (ie. all the Tomita renditions, for example). That influence is especially present when you hear the stacked 4th-ish bits of the Joe Hisaishi OSTs with the main theme on flute & oboe unison, that's very Ravel who funnily enough was pretty obsessed with 'orientalism'.) Then you got the enormous influence of American modern jazz (those famous stacked 4ths, 'so what' voicings where originally lifted by Bill Evans from Ravel again) and fusion. A musician that basically built his whole sound around parralel Add2 voiced chord progression is Roy Ayers. Eventually that got incorporated into 80s american R'n'b wich is super sophisticated harmonically (stuff like Anita Baker), wich the Japanese mixed into whats now called City Pop. I think the reason why that stuff works so well is because many of the japanese scales are pentatonic, and as all pentatonic they love being pitted against fourthy, add2 type chord progressions.

Thank you for your elaborate comment. I am checking out your music suggestions which are quite helpful to further dive into these particular Japanese styles. Much obliged!!

Who doesn’t like 7ths or 9ths? Leonard Cohen didn’t like 7ths or 9ths. You won’t find many on any of his albums. I love them but find that when I write songs I do prefer triads.

Interesting. 7ths and 9ths add different colors to chords so it's completely up to you to use them or not (:

If it's not an extended or sus chord then Joe Hisaishi is not interested.
Vor 10 MonateSlikkTim
I used to tell students the "secret" Hisaishi intro recipe: Sus chord with the flatted VI on the bass or flatted II. Parralel that stuff around in a meditation like tempo. Voila !

Better than use the overused 5ths.
Vor yearpascalwoelk
@David 26 A "rare definition" and a confusing one, admittedly. At music uni my teachers asked me to stick to common terminology if I happened to come up with "rare definitions". Especially when communicating in a group of students. I'm happy you stopped by and are engaging in this discussion. Have a nice day!
Vor yearpascalwoelk
@gregorious Exactly. Thanks for pointing that out. At music uni we learned different terminology because there are different systems on how to "describe music". I would always stick to one of the most common and established systems since those are easy-understood by everybody. Happy to have you here!

@gregorious This reads like a joke I'm out.

@David 26 He said earlier "What do you mean exactly?" Look, i was just trying to be nice and point out a better way of saying something for clarity, i didn't mean to offend you haha
Vor yearDavid 26
@gregorious Wdym Bruh I'm not wrong it's just a rarer definition. "know what you're talking about" lol but I do, none of what I said was wrong your concern is just personal preference and regarding him knowing being a factor you don't even know him. Chill dude you don't need to continue this lol.
