Being a citizen of the European Union means that many aspects of our lives are regulated by a weird entity. It feels like a huge bureaucracy is making decisions over our heads. How democratic is the EU really and does your vote actually affect anything?

I am European, I've watched this video 5 times now and i still dont understand half of the EU
Vor yearDargkkast
I'll give you the summary: all of this video is the political half of the EU, the nice part where "we all go towards the European dream", ignoring this layer being where all the little political leeches go any kind of meetings, some very, VERY useless meetings in which nothing is truly decided but it's nice to pat themselves on the back for "thinking about this" (not all politicians that participate are leeches, but there are sooooo many small bureaucrats whose job is literally useless, it's making me think of working there myse- I mean what?); then there's the economic (bigger) half of the EU, the true foundations, the EEC and the European Central Bank, these guys run this as a business, and, well, you can see that with the best example we have, Greece: step 1, let greece enter the EU sooner than they should, as they dont have a strong enough economy; step 2, as we (the EEC and this Bank) will loan as much money as we can to greek institutions, and because many of them won't be able to pay back, we'll gain all those businesses; step 3, repeat until you own all that can be owned; step 4, kick them out the EU as we can (as they will be detrimental to the euro and, therefore, to every other country of the eu, so they wont be doing it for protecting their money, they'll do it for us, aren't they nice?). Not that they will f-cked all us up, but still, greece isnt a punching bag, and... empathy should be a pretty important part of their cv? Sooooo... maybe universities and public institutions need 1-year-worth more of ethics courses. Or maybe those guys are just vampires, then we just need some garlic and a trip to Brussels and co., yummy. Wow what a wall of text, sorry xd

The Prime Minister (head of state) represents/represented the UK. The queen is mostly a figurehead and has no significant role in politics (search: "constitutional monarchy" if you're curious). Other European nations also have monarchs (kings/princes/queens) who don't directly affect politics.

I love the birds at 1:22 all surreptitiously hide that they have the weapons they just said were bad. If you're an EU member wondering what the future might hold for you, I'll use some American (sorry) examples. If you empower the EU and diminish the power of the member states and their leaders, you will end up most likely with a monolithic government like that of the current United States - trending towards being one people instead of many. This means a strong central government that can do more, but is also more bitterly fought over for control of it... so don't be surprised if you choose this option that you will see a partisan, polarized EU in the future like what America currently "enjoys". The upside (sort of) is this means a more cohesive state, but EU bureaubirbs who you may not like or know at all will have more power over you, and individual freedom of the states and possibly the citizens themselves will be less than the following possibility. However, if you vote for individual member states and heads of state to retain their power and influence, you will most likely end up with a union or coalition with strong what we call "state's rights" in the USA - which can be good or bad. Depending on how far you go with this, you can still end up with the modern USA government, or another form of government that didn't do so well... I'll get to it in a bit. State's rights in their current form means that Americans can choose on a state level if they want, say, recreational or medicinal marijuana to be legal, which I think is a good thing. However, this also means that individual states can do bad things and even the President can't do much about it, like the recent Republican efforts to "clean up voting" in the USA after Donald Trump lost the 2020 Presidential election - many having a large outcry over this attempt to make voting harder, mainly affecting Democratic voters like the poor and people of color. But partially because of state's rights, President Biden can't do much about it. Congress has to act at a national level to prevent such things, and this is unlikely given the Senate is currently split 50/50 between Trump leaning Republicans and Democrats. If you go too far with state's rights, you end up with a Confederacy, where the states are very powerful and independent, where the central government does not hold much power at all. This was tried twice in American history - once at a national level, under the highly ineffective Articles of Confederation, which did not even give the national government to raise taxes at all if I remember correctly, and then in the American South, when states split off and formed the Confederate States of America. Due to its very nature, ignoring all industrial disparity in the war between North and South, the CSA was not a very functional state; for example, in the waning days of the war, they repeatedly requested more men and supplies for the Civil War from the member states... only for many members to refuse, saying basically "I don't want any of our Texans dying to defend a bunch of Virginians." There may be some upsides to a confederacy, but it is unlikely that either the USA or the EU will ever see this type of government ever again, given modern trends towards more state power and centralization.

I honestly feel like EU democracy can't be much more indirect than UK national democracy. In my constituency, my vote doesn't count, and I certainly don't directly select who'll be minister of what. What's more, Parliament, the supposedly sovereign body, is usually beholden to any executive.
Vor yearCarewolf
In fact EU parliamentary elections were the only place constituency minorities in the UK ever had their vote count. Due to proportional representation. And I think the UK is the one country with same democratic limitation in that the house of commons can't suggest legislation, only the government can.

It's a risk, but for large institutions and complex constituencies, direct democracy is not the solution. For the European Union, direct democracy means taking power from Member States so a balance should be found.

@봉바상한 Freedom of speech my friend, this picture is an example of the extremes people have for their freedom of speech. It may be extremely offensive, but that is a side effect of these freedoms. Problem about enforcing them not to do it, is where do we stop? If we start manipulating the freedom of speech so that we're not offended, eventually it'll be used to silence the most soft things. I'm terribly sorry if i've offended you, I was not educated about that tragedy and I will take the time myself to research it and understand the terrible events that occured. @Snow Flakes dude I'm 18, genuinely couldn't care less about politics and the UK is just a mess. Brexit was a shambles and ever since we left last year its just gotten worse every month. Im pretty sure stores being half empty is thanks to us leaving the EU and same goes for the fuel shortage last month. At the same time the way the country is being run is actually quite funny imo, wouldn't expect a country of this size to be run so badly. Anyway doubt you will be reading this as you write like you're 80 and there's a high chance you've just dropped dead in the last month

@Snow Flakes my cousin's Wife had to fill out a form because she is Czech, the only reason why she wasn't deported was because, and I quote, "hadn't got a loan from the government". Those Xenophobic Bigots and their little pitball need to step up their game if they want to stay elected, at this rate I'd vote for Binface.

I litterally cant believe my home language youtube videos. So at the end of the video he said about the playlist with videos for most european languages and romanian is there and for some weird reason in the thumbnail instead of saying: "Is the EU bad?", it says: "EU = satan?". Of course this is probably not Kurzgesagt's choice, but i honestly can't believe what kind of community romanian has. (You may think its just that video, but oh no most videos are like that with weird talking and stuff like that. Also why did I bother to write this comment? I honsestly have no idea. Its 1 AM and im just bored.)

my personal issue with the EU is that change is very unlikely, since most of the power comes from the member states its up to the member states to willingly give up the power, which almost any form of government will almost never do

Government should be as local as possible so that it is easier for people to keep it in check. We need decentralization not centralization. Every nation should be independent. We should even divide nations into partially independent states like in the US. If the EU was only an economic union I would be okay with it but I don't want to share my governing power with 500 million people. 66 million is too much yet alone 500 million. Also, thinking that an entire continent would like to live by the same laws is as far as you can get from the truth.

@Whateverfits not really, they do the same in the House of Commons. Also 🤢 to voting UKIP (or Brexit Party), they remind me too much of a UK-wide SNP who only have one agenda. Honestly unpopular opinion but I still think Conservatives are the best bet - Labour is full of Marxists, the Greens are also a bit too left leaning for my tastes, Lib Dems are good in theory but flip-flop on their policies too much... Don't get me wrong, May needs to be replaced with someone half decent, but still better than the alternatives!
Vor 3 yearsRicochet
I think part of the problem is it is an entirely new form of government that we still need to figure out how its supposed to operate. There arent many multinational groups that are as close as the EU is and we still need to figure out how a democracy made up of smaller democracies works.
Vor 2 yearsSandal_Thong
EU is a good first step towards One-World Government. There was a story I heard recently about the EU having its own military to save money. There needs to be an end to the nation-state which are each led by a warlord, like Japan before unification.

I think EU is democratic enough. They are not monopolized by the central government. Some of unitary countries are monopolized, so their government is sometimes nonsense and can be easily corrupted by selfish forces.
Vor 2 yearsmangalores-x_x
The EU commission is always presented as the EU government. Problem with that is, it is patently false. They are at best the bureaucracy level of government. They have no mandate to formulate policy or make political decisions, what they do is implement decisions by the EU Council, be it those made in treaties or those at Council meetings. E.g. the EU commission may suggest a specific trade policy, however the decision for or against it is done by the EU Council, maybe even national parliaments, not the EU Comission. To me the problem here is that the entire anti democracy narrative agenda hinges on the complete misunderstanding how much power the EU Commission has. In essence it is a strongly curtailed body of, yes, unelected bureaucrats, that at best gets limited mandates by the EU Council while being controlled by EU parliament. They are how top level bureaucracies are being instructed by elected officials in pretty much all representative democracies. They are not the people with mandate, they are advising and then implementing what they are being told by the people with mandate.

Isn't the issue that even if 100% of nations population (and their representatives) is against some EU decision, other countries can still just vote yes? Now, I assume EU can't directly force member country to obey, but it seems that EU then pressures representatives until their backbone snaps or are really crampy with that nation.

In principle the EU is a magnificent concept, it's just the reality that concept is presented with is somewhat flawed. Being from the UK, I'm sad that we voted leave but to an extent, given the feeling of disconnect (as well a some outrageous fallacies, £350 million a week more for the NHS anyone?) some people have for the EU I can understand why they voted the way that they did.

GasMask Ronin No. Great Britain is the largest of the British Isles. England, Wales and Scotland are on the island Great Britain, Northern Ireland is on the island Ireland.
