For me, they make the most normal phones. They have MicroSD and a headphone jack, as well as a nice sound chip. When i first saw the iPhone X, my thoughts were that is was designed for aliens, as well as the newer samsung phones, they aren't designed for humans + their touchwiz UI bloatware.

The fact that they have an SD card slot, a headphone jack, an innovative zoom and very clever specs is why I love Sony smartphones.

@Animănui Vasile Because having a 3.5 mm jack makes music listening a lot peaceful and of a high quality. I don't always need to worry about charging my earphones, they are cheaper, reliable and high quality. No need to turn on phone Bluetooth always which saves both phone battery and my privacy. And it's not easy to loose wires headset's one ear. Secondly if I ever want to use wireless headset's, I can but I am not forced by not having a headphone jack. Regarding the memory card, It gives me the flexibility to expand storage instead of relying on cloud storage. I just upgraded to 256gb card from 64gb. It is totally safe as Android settings offer the option to encrypt SD card. So it means if someone stole your phone and tool out SD card, he won't be able to access anything on it.

Personally, I have been very frustrated with newer smartphone cameras moving away from camera-like interfaces and function, and I like that Sony is using a more photographer-focused UI that leaves the editing to the user.

Yep, one of the reasons why my phone is a phone and my full frame camera is my camera!

I'd like a hybrid. I'm into amateur photography and would love a true manual camera experience. That said, with two kids under 3, I really appreciate being able to get a quick, easy picture of good quality of rambunctious kids, that I'd otherwise miss with a fully manual camera. A hybrid would be best. All you really need is two software packages on one phone, it should've be that hard

The thing about the image quality which is explained fairly well in this video, but not well enough is that the phone itself is meant for professional use, they don't focus on the utomatic features of the camera, because learning how to use the manual settings is quite easy on this phone, AND once you learn to use them, it competes with the iPhone 13 Pro Max easily! The potential in this phone is so much bigger than most people see, and Sony will definitely become much bigger now!

@Space Man That's the crux of it, most people who use their phone for photography are 'happy snappers', a photographer wants the creative process and experience from start to finish. I use my Huawei P30 Pro for quick snaps and fun photos but for professional images my Canon 5D

I think you are missing the point of a smart phone. the average consumer just wants an easy to use interface and not have to mess about with manual settings. Whilst the Sony looks tempting, I would much prefer the Samsung interface with intelligent automatic settings. A professional camera is a professional camera. A phone is a phone

Sony making a phone fun to explore. Not everything auto

I remember back in the early 2000's when Sony Ericsson had designs for phones and they looked awesome. But, nothing ever came of them. Which was so disappointing! Still, nice to see them still in the fight! Because I love their products. I'm from the Walkman days. And Sony dominated!

The problem with Sony's phone is that by the time they arrive on the stores, the competition may have a new model already. Yep they are very slow on logistics their phone to the stores.

I don't think this is as true as it was a few years back. About 2-3 years ago Sony would announce a phone and it wouldn't be something you could even pre-order and if you could order it, it would take at least another 3-8 months. Nowadays they're at least within 1-3 months time frames before consumers can order and receive them In timely manners. So it's definitely gotten better but it's clear they didn't expect to do so well these last few years since they were on a slowing streak for a very long time.

I have an older Sony phone (Xperia XZ2) and I have to say that Sony really know how to create a great interface, this is easily the smartest and easiest to use phone that I have ever owned, hopefully they are still leading the way there. In theory Sony should have a decent advantage for audio and video too.

I still have my first Xperia z1s from T mobile, never liked anything else after it. I even bought a handful of flaps that covered the charge port, but that phone I could take it in the lake or pool for 20 30 minutes at a time and it would be fine. No one else I knew had one or have heard of it, definitely felt like the Premium Device

My first smartphone was Sony Ericson Xperia Mini. That was a legend. After using so many phones I still remember how good it was.

I bought my first Sony Xperia when I was in high school, it was the Xperia Z, I completely loved that phone and it is still working (obviously not great), then got the Z3 Plus (still working pretty well), when Sony decided to disappear from pretty much 90% of the global market I had decide which brand I was going to move to, went for iPhone, hated the UI, hated the OS, hated how overpriced everything was, got rid of it quickly, then I decided to try Samsung, it's the brand I'm currently using, not bad, but not even close to Sony, I am a 100% sure my next phone well be an Xperia again, those phones are the only ones that I feel that meets all of my standards.

Used the Xperia Vivaz and then the Z3 and then XZ2. Now using the iPhone 13 Pro Max(hate the OS to this day) because Sony just stopped selling phones where I stay. Pretty sad tbh.

@Zugo-TG true to some extent. The ceo, only see sales..most companies is that way. Sony always been in market war. Like their bluray and Playstation 2. They lost money on those item just to have it dominate the market. They make their money elsewhere. For smart phone, it could be that they know it's competitive against a lot of other brand. So I think they rather have their own design and cater for small group instead of trying to take a market share of a pie. Maybe they just want a bite of a pie. That way, they won't spend a lot for research and design and losing if it don't sells. Phone don't really have exclusive parts. It's either works slightly better or running different operations. Design is what people most want nowadays

I received my Xperia IV on Wednesday and I sent it back on Friday when using the 85mm and 125mm telephotos and shooting in raw, the images just come out soft and blurry you would think my shutter speed was wrong for the focal length or I had not focussed properly. As for the DNG files even at low ISO they was extremenly noisy . I am a sony alpha shooter and love Sony products but I have got to say it was a massive disappointment. I likely either buy S22 ultra or wait for the iPhone 14 now. If you look on reddit there's people discussing how soft the telephoto shots are apparently there is a update releasing to improve it For the price it is not worth it massive disappointment.

Absolutely the best review out there, i have seen so many influencers giving biased reviews, this one here is pure comparison of the two phones, I'd say the only thing you missed was the camera functions of a sony alpha camera, when we switch the mode from basic to, shutter speed priority or auto, or manual, we get to set the ISO, shutter speed, AF, and eveything that we can do in an actual DSLR.

I just bought the S22 Ultra, upgraded from an S9+. I've only just heard about this Sony phone and while I certainly wouldn't swap it, I really want to try it out. Headphone jack, SD CARD, that is big thing, I want an SD card. It's display is 4k, more than the Ultra. It's processor is Snapdragon, which is apparently better than my Exynos Ultra. If I had money I'd buy both.

Sony's been in the business a long time, I genuinely hope this is the start of them finally becoming competative.

The Sony phone looks awesome and looks like it performs well. One thing that was mentioned in this video by the gentleman was that slow motion mode was not a big deal to him, well it all depends on what you're looking at as I find the slow mode future to be helpful when trying to look at something that happens very quickly and you want to get a more definitive look at what actually happened. This feature has come in handy for me quite a few times. Personal experience from a slow motion video user option.

The Xperia Z was my favourite phone of all time and I was by far the most excited to get it than I ever have been about any other phone. I really really hope they turn their reputation around and start smashing out the competition. I’ve had HTC, Google, Samsung, Blackberry, iPhones (current) and I’d LOVE Sony to sort out their kinks (oi oi) and get back up there

Around 85% of the time I like how Samsung pictures come out but sometimes I want it to look exactly how I’m seeing it before the shot, and afterwards it just gets ruined and changes everything about the perfect picture. Apple does the same thing too with no way of turning that off. Still happens in Raw mode and with all enhancements turned off

I find the price too expensive. Even though it has continuous zooming, the zoom is rather weak. My Note 9 has a 2x zoom and it's way too weak for many activities. Seen a A52 model with 10x zoom, and that is way more useful. For the current pricing, Sony should have a 10x continuous zoom by my book.

@Zero_X yeah thats interesting. I own Sony’s premium blu ray player and the software is very professional looking with pure function over anything else. Settings menu is just black background and white text. Software is designed to be pure functional with no looks

At 6:25 the photo comparisons between the two cameras, I felt that the Sony Xperia images were consistently better, in every way other than reducing lens flare.

Still getting updates for my Z5 Premium. I also prefer to use the Sony camera in manual mode on all their devices as their automatic camera app is pretty poor . If you play around with the exposure and white balance you can easily get much better shots . The Xperia Pro I got mixed reviews for image quality but rated as far superior to its competitors when used properly by a decent photographer. Also Sony's battery technology is the best around for protecting the battery . I have an original Xperia Z and also a Sony Satio which are still able to hold a day's charge on their original battery.

Very well produced and informative comparison, thank you. I would never spend a thousand dollars to buy a phone with no headphone jack and a meager 128Gb of memory, so Samsung isn't even on my short list. A brand-new S22 Ultra 128Gb model only has 88Gb of free memory when you un-box it. The OneUI and other Samsung crapware consume nearly 20Gb of a Samsung's memory, and you can't delete most of it. (Pixel 6 has 108Gb free space out of the box). I enjoy high fidelity music with my phone, and that requires a good DAC and a headphone jack.

I bought a Sony Xperia III, since I wanted to support the underdog. Man, the headphone jack came in handy a few times. And the screen without a hole punch is...awesome. I love it. I want Sony to succeed, so I put my money where my ideals were. No regrets!

@Petru Seriously though. I recently had to point that out to someone who legit thought Samsung were the main ones supplying sensors. Told them how in their own investor write up at the time, Samsung said how they were a distant second to Sony and wanted to attempt closing that gap. There are others of course, and even I had only just learned that Samsung was even in the game over lockdown when they 'announced' a sensor. It's amazing how in the information age, all these kids gather is "Sony not doing well" and go no further than that simply because I suppose the only Sony device any of them even eyeball is the Playstation. No curiosity at all.

You summed it up perfectly with that camera. I've had Xperia 5 II, with impressive camera hardware specs. Pretty comparable to any other flagship phone. But the software postprocessing, the ,,things that happen behind the scenes" as you said... It's rubbish. I absolutely loved everything about the phone, but the camera irritated me so much I switched to Apple after 10 years of using Android. And I am not looking back. For sure, i sometimes miss 120 Hz display and fast operation of stock android, great 21:9 display, NFC, better working Google services and so on... But I always reliably get nice looking picture from my iPhone 13 mini main lens, telephoto and as well selfie camera. Video is also much better, that dynamic range is untouchable. Combined with interesting FILM mode and refined portrait mode, Apple is making one of the best photographic phones for ,,ordinary" people. Just point and shoot you will be satisfied. Some can argue that Sony can produce similar shots when you shot them in RAW, set up your shutter, iso, retouch them in Lightroom... blah blah blah... But man, that's not what I want from my phone. That's why I have my Sony A6500 - where i can really benefit from all the settings, possibilities of editing and physically much larger sensor, better lenses... I couldn't even took decent looking photo of document I had to sent ASAP sometimes, as the shutter speed was too long, corners were out of focus. It was just bad... I really wanted to see Sony succeed, I've been always been fan. They have awesome features and lovable design. But I think this was, sadly, my last try.

@Pixels I know... but the telephoto sucked so much on the Xperia 5 II i was afraid to even use it and frustrated everytime I took photo with it. Photos were often out of focus, not sharpened after taking the shot and absolutely different looking colors than on pictures taken with main lens. So yeah, im not missing it at all and I hardly believe Sony improved the telephoto or even ultrawide that much I would consider buying Sony again... Im more satisfied with photos from iPhone that are digitally zoomed (even though the perspective is different compared to physical lens).

We as Consumers are so Proud of Smartphone makers.. First they reduced Earphones, then Headphone Jack itself, then Chargers and now Cables. Our Environment is SAFE because of them ! We're also So-Very Excited to Unbox the case in the future only to find that there'd be no Phone in it either 🥺 P.S. Sony is only losing because they're not going in lower budget. I think it is a disservice to other companies to call Sony "small". While it is true that their phone division isn't massive, they are an absolutely GIANT company with their hands in maybe more pies than Samsung. They should have no trouble putting in as much, if not more, money into R&D and optimization. Not to mention, they have a PS, which is almost all about software as the hardware comes from other companies. Sony should have no excuses for their lackluster software experience

The interface of Sony is very nice I got the Sony e 4g when it came out new and I was happy with it and I would like if it delivers a great phone in a mid range section

I remember in 2014 buying the Sony Xperia Z3, I loved that phone, nobody else I knew had one and it looked and felt like a much more premium built android flagship compared to most of the competition then and had some great features for it's time, just a clean design, also makes me think of my other favorite brand of Androids at that same period the HTC M's, my HTC 10 was the last of the great HTC Flagship devices, hope Sony keeps pushing forward in the smartphone arena, they make cool designs and offer an alternative.

Had an X3 as well I freaking loved that phone until I broke it after many years

@Trijit I absolutely agree with you, that's why I still have my S10+ and am still more than happy with it, it's plenty powerful, great camera, beautiful display and more features then I even use, there isn't anything offered or enough of a difference from the newer devices that I don't already have, it's very incremental, there was a time when it seemed like every year or two there were big differences in performance but within the last few years it's become a little stagnant and heavily camera focused, the only real world differences between my S10+ from 2019 and an S22 Ultra is 120 hz refresh rate, slightly better camera's and a slightly faster processor which none of make enough difference to me to need to upgrade at all, what I have is still more then good enough.

Yes thats true what i mean is all these youtubers every year make these phones sound like it will take us to mars. But at the end of the day it is smart brick that does most of the job and little difference between them. The new cameras are negligible when picture uploaded in Instagram, unless someone want to use raw picture for publishing. Hence buy whatever is available in your country and have sales offer.

@Trijit come to think of it, my Galaxy S10+ is the longest I've ever owned a device for, it's still a great phone that I'm not planning on upgrading from yet, the S10 line was a game changer for Samsung in my opinion, says alot for what Samsung was able to achieve in there device quality.

@Trijit well when I say flagship I just mean each brands top model, yes when you buy a flagship model you'd expect to get all the best features but also build quality too, back then it was different in respect to the build quality of android devices, many top models were still being made of plastics and just overall less premium cheaper feeling materials, your right though in comparison to a note 10 to note 20, they're quality devices of the same build but back in 2013/2014 Galaxy phones weren't glass and metal designs so while having all the newest featured software of the day build quality lacked compared to say HTC but now even my current S10+ still feels and is just as well made as any newer Galaxy S model, Samsung came a long way from the years I was speaking of.

... what do you mean "they made"? They have been making the same features in their phones for at least 5-7 years! It's tech people that never acknowledged it, the reason that Sony tanked! They pioneered waterproof phones. My Z5 compact was way ahead of the competition in many ways! Sony phones were the best quality one would want on a smartphone since features phones (i.e. Sony Ericsson K7). If only they made more models and not only super expensive flagships! It's truly a pity that Sony is almost pushed out of the smartphone market! Maybe it's their still stupid naming scheme! 🤷‍♂️

I loved my early Sony and hope they get good again

I really want the Sony but I love photography, so the camera quality is important. When I was looking at TV's it was hard to tell the Sony and Samsung apart until you really look at the Samsung picture quality. It had such a depth to it that couldn't be matched. I just feel like they are spying and gathering loads of data tho. Do they have a camera on their TV's MrWhoseTheBoss? Are they listening to my living room?

I really wish phone companies would stop this stupid trend of giving less things in the box, especially when they're keeping the prices of the phones more or less similar. It really cheapens the experience of buying something that's supposed to be the top of the line, end all be all product of the company.

@Normal Channel anyways like other mentioned, there will be charger/cable included. As this is a review unit they did not include it, it would be waste of material, as you would say it, to have it for preproduction/review unit.

Other than ASUS, I really hope Sony will implement a DAC chip in their phones, since LG already left the market.

Hi I have seen few videos where the sony proves the best when used with a tripod and image bracketing. I guess literally sony has been pushing a compact dslr camera or its power into their recent flagships that only an expert photographer can make use of.

We can't keep letting Samsung and Apple to control the cellular experience. The best example of this is Apple trying to go subscription based where you don't own the phone. You know damn well Samsung is just a few minutes behind and will do the same thing. I'm sure if given enough power so would Sony but we need a more competitive market now! I'm at the level of carrying two phones. I personally think it's where we are going as a society. Given that, I'm seriously thinking about using another manufacturer for my next phone. We need that company who actually listens to the consumer. If people want the 3.5 Jack back then do it. Stop trying to find new ways to screw the public by squeezing more money from them.

@Enis B they use type C ports.... you probly have like at least more than one 45+watt charger for your laptop that use type c already trust me the work really well and are better then spending the extra buck for a fast charger from samsung.. also alot of things these days use type C compared to apples proprietary shit lightning connecter... heck the pair of headphones you bought probly came a type C cord too.... I can see why they removed the charger.. it not only saves money by a mile but ppl already have type C chargers at home...

I used to be an iFan, however, when I got a chance to experience the Sony Xperia Z3, I was impressed by its display. Samsung Galaxy display is bright, but it looks oversaturated to me, same as the photo shot on Samsung smartphone. Been a loyalty customer of Xperia til now.

I did notice that during your review, you showed the basic Camara app, it takes a couple of clicks but if you go to auto it helps a lot, Plus you get easy access to those Camara important settings really fast

Sony has beautiful display and cameras and back in the day when we had physical buttons they had the best design especially in the Xperia s where the hardware buttons lit up and you could see the home and recents icon .... I hope they don't die out like LG because I would really like to try out their new stuff.

Correction on paper it's a 10/10 display, the delivery is more of a 8/10 you realise they have a bit of a green colour tint ;-; maybe it's just my model tho

I really love that Sony's phones are going in the same direction as their cameras... Which are excellent highly technical devices that really specialize at what they do well! I think something that gets glossed over is that Sony doesn't just make amazing professional cameras, they make some of the best COMPACT cameras on the market too! (Even if that still doesn't help with the camera software.)

I love Sony phones because of the simplicity of the UI and their camera. The camera is simple and basic as it should be. No Auto beauty enhancements because they want you to do the photo editing based on your personal preference.

I've been a SONY follower, consumer and preacher since forever. I've had 2 Huawei phones up until now after being so disappointed by the lack of progress Xperia had been making since Xperia Z5 (my last one, after having the SP inter alia).. I feel like it's time for me to come home. My P30 pro does the job the way it's supposed to be, but SONY is where my heart feels the best. Xperia 1IV really makes me feel something special. But at the same time, I might wait one year and buy the 1 V .. urgh well.

Imagine sony's hardware and google's software combined for smartphone photography

I got an Xperia M4 back in the day and it was a great phone. Until it started to get very hot for no reason. I took it to the authorized repair center and they said it took 20 business days to fix the phone. I then tried with a few repair shops and they said the phone was too delicate to repair and they'd rather not even try. So I had no choice but to wait over a month at the repair center, and buy a cheaper phone to use during that time. Now this is something I keep in mind. If I have to repair a Samsung the authorized gets it done in a few hours, and if you're out of warranty any shop gets it repaired in 30 min. Só what's it like with these new Sony phones if I need to repair?

I remember having the Xperia Z3 back in the day. Best phone I've ever had. Thinking about giving this thing a try but I feel like it costs $300 more than it should. Hopefully the price will drop a bit in the next few months.

I used to have Xperia Z2 back in the day and other than my previous phone the Samsung Galaxy S10+, I have never loved a phone as much as the Sony one.

@kristos kalemanis No, it does not have it. That's the Xperia Pro-I you're thinking of.

The extra 300 is because it has an HDMI input so you can use it as an external screen for things like cameras or even plug in a gaming system.

@Dannnsss You must be smoking something. Sonys design language has pretty much always been function first for pretty much every product they have ever released (not just phones). The aspect ratio of the screen is slimmer to enable much easier handling with one hand for example.

Samsung's theme engine is crazy!! Most other Android devices start out awesome but become boring at month 2-3 months.. Samsung phones get boring too but once you throw a new theme on the device you are back to feeling excited again.

I'm old enough to remember when Sony was considered to be the premium brand and Samsung was the cheap brand. That was decades before Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone... heck, the first iPod.

some years ago I got a Sony Xperia (X5 mini I think). it was OK until the GPS just stopped working. turns out that was a common problem with those phones. Sony's response to this common problem was to do nothing. the phone also didn't las all that long past my 2 year upgrade cycle.... so at this point I don't trust them with phones

I got the first Experia z1. It had a common fault of the screen cracking when the waterproof coating contracted after cooling from charging quicker than the phone. There was never a proper admission of fault and when they fixed the phone tried to charge me hundreds of pounds for repair saying I had broken it (it cracked whilst sat stationery on the table playing youtube, in front of me and my dads eyes) the alternative was for no repair to be made but postage back would be £70 and I needed to let them know within a few days or my device would be destroyed ! Absolutely disgusting service and letter from them and I vowed never to buy one again !

I own an s21 ultra, my previous phone was a Sony flagship. It only had a single camera but due to the pro mode the pictures look just as good as my s21 ultra despite being 4 generations behind it. It also had a 4k display and was the first phone to have 960fps slo mo. Sony has always been underrated for their phone's.

@Black Octopus Yes, in reply to my comment about Samsung's high end phones. By which I meant contemporary, like the phone in this video. Plenty of manufacturers have had dodgy software in the past, heck Sony didn't even support capturing raws to 2019.

@Black Octopus Ok... A 3 year old phone with aging camera hardware that completely lacks support for Samsung's Expert RAW app... Expert RAW is a an excellent app that allows for manual control, computational RAW support, etc.

Sony w2022 5g is the phone i really want because of the high grade music player. The price might be scary though.

Sony's always had better audio than Samsung, and helped by a 3.5mm headphone socket. And portable storage for shunting your lossless collection around. Whether that matters to you is down to personal preferences.

Don't forget planned obsolescence. I had Samsung phones becoming extremely slow and unreliable after a year or two but all of my LG and Sony phones don't.

I bought my first (and last) Flagship Phone from SONY a few years ago - the Xperia XZ1 Premium. It was way ahead of Apple, even had a LIDAR sensor built in for use with the very remarkable 3D Scan app (which I used a LOT and loved). BUT the Bluetooth integrated inside that phone was CRAP. I had numerous issues with trying to pair it with anything - I literally had to power OFF the Phone every time I got into my car, and then power it back ON before I could get the bloody thing to pair! I had even purchased a Bluetooth receiver from SONY so I could play tunes from my Samsung Galaxy Smartwatch and listen to them through wired headphones - but STILL the same issues persisted with trying to pair that SONY device with anything! SONY's Bluetooth chips and their never-ending issues with pairing ended my relationship with them forever. The Forums were full of many others who had exactly the same issues with pairing, and nothing that SONY suggested (Factory reset, anyone?) ever fixed the issue. Sorry - never again!

Problem with Sony is that, it's battery is weak. It keeps on freezing. I think they should give the cellphone division to Ericsson

I've been and still using Sony phones since my very first phone, by that time it was a Sony Ericsson, so almost 15 years now. Even though I am always supporting Sony, it's undeniable that they are not able to compete with the other phones like iPhone, Samsung or Huawei in some features, but overall, they keep their spirit. I hope they can get back to the race with more creative innovations, instead of just focusing on camera hardware (which is, by the way, already top).

Media consumption is something i do much more then photos, and even those i prefer with the more natural look of Sony's phone. Maybe mk 5 or 6 will be up to par with Samsung on the camera AI front. I just watched a Jared Polin video where he mentioned the Xperia I mk 4 and he suggested that Sony won't be too worried about sales since the phone also serves as a demonstration platform for its' tech (camera sensors, display, lens optics, etc.). Tech they can then sell to a lot of other manufacturers.

I actually like how they made it feel like an alpha camera with it's settings in the phone camera. I wish my S22 Ultra had that Sony layout. I would love this camera almost as much as my Sony SLR.

I own a Sony Xperia I-II The camera is amazing! I have the best of both worlds, I use the Google camera app to take top tier casual quick click photos like a pixel using sony hardware & for special photos I use the sony "pro" to take my time to adjust many settings to get it just right. But let's be clear.. any decent phone these days takes great photos! The tiny differences won't be noticed by most people (or even care) and on a personal note, I'm really not a fan of apple's face touch up soft ware or how processed google & Samsung camera's do it.. (I personally like it as close to real as I see it with my own eyes)
