People claim that 70-80% of household dust is dead skin, but is it true?
Thanks to Google for sponsoring this video! Learn more about Search here: www.google.com/search/howsear...
Special thanks to J.M.E.H van Bronswijk, author of 'House Dust Biology'. We exchanged emails to make sure I got my facts straight for this video. Below is an excerpt from her email to me, responding to my claims that start with a dash:
- Around half of airborne dust particles under 100um are skin scales
This is true for climates, regions and seasons where people live mostly indoors.
The 1 to 2 g of skin scales shed each 24 hours will end up in places where people are present (and rub their skin or have textile moving over the skin).
You can also look at it from a different angle: What else has the same size and could contribute? That will usually be pollen from outdoor sources, also depending on season, region and climate, as well as the ventilation regime of the building.
However, taken as the median value over a whole year, I consider your statement correct for regions with a temperate climate.
- 53% of dust particles vacuumed from a mattress were found to be skin scales
It depends a little on the type of mattress. For polyether mattresses the amount may even be larger.
For mattresses made of natural material it could be less since the mattress-material will also give off small particles.
- larger particles consist mostly of fibers, eg. cotton, paper, wool, synthetics
That's true .. including bread crumbs ..... 🙂
- skin scales seem to form a larger fraction of dust where we spend more time, e.g. in or near bed.
..... and on the couch used to view television or be active in gaming.
It has to do with the constant production of skin scales over the 24 hours.
- skin scales form a smaller fraction of dust if there are significant other sources, e.g. carpeting, dirt from outside etc.
Yes, everyting you walk on with your shoes or that recieves dirt from the outside with other means, will have a lessr percentage of human skin scales.
However, do not forget the skin scales of pets that will also be an active allergen for many people, and a food source for house dust mites.

@Delan Morstik Thank you for taking the time out of your life to respond to my comment. I did not proof read it prior to sending so I hope that I didnt come across as too harsh. 1: While I respect the assertion proposed and will not give you a knock in this regard, the main thing that I want to point out is that the continued asking of "but where did X come from" extends beyond just marveling at scientific conclusions from observing matter into borderline philosophical and theological thinking, which isnt the same field as what was first discussed. It was not the direction in which the conversation seemed to be going but at this point we are speculating on a conversation that never involved either of us which I do not feel comfortable making a judgement on. 3: I would propose that instead of it coming from a place of insecurity, it rather comes from a position of authority. (or superiority as that seems to be the term we are using in this case) A bait more or less. While it is not impossible to assume that the conversation was intended to spark genuine insightful interactions, later comments and the stereotype of people using social media makes it difficult for me to give the benefit of the doubt. I would like to take note of "But responding by mocking is often a bad response, because it will only make they insecurity hide and not disappear." as I hold this same position strongly. I agree wholeheartedly that, for the most part, we (as social creatures) should rather educate than demean for the lack of knowledge. In regards to parts 2 and 4 of your response, I have little that I feel necessary to comment on. You have your own methodology for approaching those around you that may or may not be as effective as mine. I will do my best to not over extend the amount of support I show to either party in this conflict as my thoughts are of little significance to the discussion at hand. I like to remain more hands off when looking at others' topics of discussion unless there is something that I can, in good faith and a high confidence interval, impart onto the discussion. If you would like to here my minor nitpick of your messages, it is that they come off as extremely highbrow and could be interpreted as you the writer having some sense of authority on the matter greater than what is being discussed. I do not feel as though your intentions are in bad faith necessarily but it could come off that way. The way in which our conversation differs is that; instead of attempting to give a definitive answer as Hiram Serna and James Scott to questions that we cannot answer currently, we are allowing for much more speculation. I feel as though that respecting the others' speculation is admirable however most on any social media platform would disagree and its hard to allow oneself to be vulnerable with so many sharks in the water so to speak. Thank you for your time again and have a wonderful day.

Ok, here's a question I've always wondered, and maybe you can tackle it in a future episode: If the geological model of the Earth is correct, and you can look through the past as layers of rock and earth... where does all the material that makes up these layers of rock and earth actually come from? How does the past actually get buried over time? Is it from layers of dust? An accumulation of particles from micrometeorites? Or from some other source? And is the Earth actually getting larger over time, as it accumulates successive layers of "time"?
Vor 11 MonateMichael Drosselmeyer
To be more clear, crust is eventually subducted back into the mantle, melted down and, over millions and millions of years, erupted back onto the surface. This process does slow down over time as radioactive isotopes decay (thus contributing less heat) and the core of the planet cools, but there are no significant sources of extra material to add to the planet. Biological material is subject to these same processes (fossilization and the like) but more often is broken down and recycled by the biological processes of other organisms, which are limited in growth by the food resources and environmental conditions available to them. New matter cannot be created and there's simply not enough stuff falling from space to appreciably add mass to the planet.

What you're missing out is that everything comes from under and goes back within. Basically everything we are made of has already been a part of earth for ages, and when we perish it goes back in to be reused over time, howsoever long. There is no 'new' matter that is coming that would stack up on earth. (except probably some space stuff)

What fascinates me is that my bedsheets are various bright colours, as are my curtains and carpets, my skin is ostensibly pink, and I'm constantly dropping various crumbs of foodstuff on the floor (particularly crisps and bread, which are sort of yellowy) but when I empty the vacuum cleaner, the dust is *always* the same light grey colour, like the surface of the moon. Dull, lifeless, and grey.
Vor 3 MonateZach Rabaznaz
Skin is colorless and grey. The color you see is the blood in your arteries and veins. Microfibers are actually quite transparent individually. As for chips and bread, surely most of it turns into large chunks which are swept up or cleaned by something that isn't the vaccuum?
Vor TagReiuji Utsuho
As far as I know, skin is actually that grayish translucent color, what gives it its pink color is the blood underneath, diffusing the light that gets through.

But can we draw different conclusions regarding mass vs. size? Dead skin cells are most likely denser, so they dont contribute to the size of the dust in your vacuum, probably not even colour or look of it, but they should contribute to the weight of your vacuum.

@The Biggest Picture Google is on a spectrum of legitimacy, and so it's possible that Veritasium knows, but thinks the good that they offer weighs up for it. Or, you know, could be he's just greedy. I have to hand it to ya, if someone offered me life-changing money ....... I'd probably take it! :D For one, it gives _me_ a bigger say in _how_ the world is changed, and so if Google has invested in me, and I suggest that perhaps they're overdoing it a bit with search censorship, then they are more likely to listen. But personally, I think the more people are aware, they'll just switch to DDG or Yahoo or some other competitor, and we'll have partisan competition like we already have on other news media. We just have to make more people aware that Google is evil, and that they're most likely hiding search results that are of a certain political nature. But at least it's not as there aren't options (unlike, say, North Korea or China). (I actually got to work on a Chinese laptop, and man, you wouldn't _believe_ how much state-controlled malware and spyware is installed with administration privileges...)
Vor 2 yearsThe Biggest Picture
@kebman Yeah good point, Veritasium wants the money, of course, but isn't it selling out humanity? He should be exposing their censorship and how they're clearly interfering with the elections and democracy, instead he takes their money and speaks highly of them (while being silent about the issue that matters the most) helping them in their perceived need to counterbalance all the bad publicity they've been getting due to their attempts to ensure people are only exposed to their narrative (and they're also a pharma company btw).
Vor 2 yearskebman
@The Biggest Picture I'm not sure they're clueless, when the money these companies can offer are _life changing._ I mean, think about it. Would you rather that Putin gave you life-changing money, or a cup of tea? It's the equivalent in the West as well, except you'll probably survive, tainted, broke, but still alive. 2 points : 1. The book you referred to were published in 1981, 40 years old, this doesn't mean it's no more accurate, but the research conducted to draw graph or to give some statistics or to conclude to some meaningful results are quit old or inaccurate. The household and the furnitures materials changed a lot and we have more hypoallergenic materials all around us. So the graph you showed should be revisited depending on where you live in the world. 2. Are all humans races have the same average amount of dead skin cells as you told in the video? Could we consider that some skins types releases more or less dead skin cells than others?

Once it was established that our skin produces around 20 million skin cells per hour it was pretty obvious that the rate of losing those skin cells would also be around 20 million per hour. It simply has to be an equilibrium. You have to much production to loss and your skin will get thicker and denser which I believe is a medical condition. You have to little production to loss and you will over time lose your entire epidermis. In fact I will go as far as to say that the rate of production for the skin cells was likely established based on the rate of the skin cell loss. After all it is much easier to quantify the cells you lose than the cells that are actively produced in a living tissue. How would you even measure that without vivisection?

I was at a primary school and had to climb up on a ladder to clean out the dust filters in the projector mounted high on the ceiling of the school hall. Predictably, there was a thick layer of dust, probably building up over three or four years since whenever the last time the projector needed servicing. The dust was a pale shade of pink to match the bright red school jumpers and cardigans that the school used for its uniform.

Veritasium inadvertently shows the problem with depending solely on internet research. In terms of particle count, human cells are probably the largest component of dust, but take your own dust and examine it under a microscope. By volume mine is mostly hair and fibers, especially in the bedroom where the comforter is constantly shedding fibers. If you have a down feather comforter in a flannel covering then probably 80% of the dust in your bedroom is from this one source. We replaced our down comforter with a synthetic one and our dust volume went to maybe 10% of the previous value.

Congrats? Are you serious? How can he NOT mention that Google has a censorship filter, and therefore you won't get accurate results except for topics that are entirely uncontroversial? The ONLY reason Veritasium isn't being / hasn't been censored is because he toes their line -- as soon as he doesn't, Veritasium will be censored too. That's why they have to resort to this kind of advertising - they're essentially saying, "Hey, use us, cuz we're big, don't mind our censorship of everyone who doesn't agree with our agenda." Veritasium somehow hasn't noticed this?

Great comments. I found this more about people buying in to false information than about dust, in general. I see this constantly. All that has to happen is for a social media influencer, celebrity or politician to make a false claim and soon you'll have everyone on that bandwagon. But, I did learn a lot about dust too.
Vor 6 MonateNone Given
….that graph you referred to from House Dust Biology for Allergists, Acarologists and Mycologists, is the “The chemical composition (by percentages) of dried dust samples taken mainly from floors (after Davies 1958) “ However that graph shows that the majority of airborne dust is cotton particles. Limiting “dust” to particles less than 100um in size, only accounts for approximately 20% of particles (NIST, 2001) . So saying that >50% of 20% of all airborne particles is dead skin particles only means about 10% is chemically identifiable as “dead” skin.

As a stem cell researcher, I think it's amazing how stem cells are able to constantly renew parts of our body. It takes several weeks for stem cells to renew the outer layer of the skin and only 48 hours to renew the outer lining of the gut. Mutations can also affect this ability. Although most of these mutations are detrimental, changes in a gene called LRP5 for example can result in people having "super-strong" bones (I recently made a video about this). The world of stem cells is truly amazing!

Conservation of mass doesn't apply (at least not the way you stated it) to the question of how much dust mites living off of skin cells in a mattress can weigh. They also incorporate oxygen and water from their environment, and turn those into various solids that can accumulate in the form of waste and mite corpses. This is the same reason trees can be more massive than the nutrients they remove from the soil they live in.

Asking "is dust dead skin" compaired to "is dead skin in dust" is like asking "does this air make me breath" compaired to "how well does this air make me breath". How you ask, even if its the same idea, can change the answer a lot.

11:00 - This is actually a misconception. A lot of our own mass is gained or lost by breathing (most of the carbon released from cellular respiration is actually lost in the form of CO2 when sleeping-- part of why your weight in the morning is different than when you went to bed; or how a really calorically dense food can increase your weight by more than its own mass, though highly unlikely for humans), and so I see no reason dust mites be bound purely by the mass of the skin cells (though likely in that same ballpark, say twice as much as a max weight).

A Micrometer is a precision measurement device, often in thousandths of an inch or hundredths of a millimeter. A micrometer(micro-meter) is unit of precision measurement,x10^-6 meters. Although these two words are spelled the same they are not pronounced the same and do not mean the same thing. You measure particle sizes in micrometers (or microns) but you don’t measure dust with a micrometer.

The container test seems to be flawed as the container itself is causing friction on the skin, which would increase the number of skin cells falling off.

It's PR, not trying to raise awareness. It's no different than Coca Cola making ads. They don't do this just in case people haven't heard of them. They do this to associate positive feelings with their product. Google is a deeply evil company in what they do, having been moving from controversy to controversy in the last couple of years. Whether it's helping militaries build automatic drones, helping China censor their Internet, providing all their data to intelligence services in the USA without proper judicial oversight, or betraying people's trust by tracking them even in incognito mode. They need PR to keep their positive image.
