overall goes to Iphone. Consistent .. the video, 24mp as standard and it is quite snappy , low light mode. Iphone wins easily. gonna have this as my second phone. I love my S22Ultra as a daily driver except for the just "good camera" and this Iphone is stellar.

Definitely the Samsung S23 ultra! Even by mere viewing of the comparison shots u put up, it seemed pretty obvious that the Samsung samples were better. I was kinda surprised on many occasions when u said u preferred that of the iPhone. Had to watch the video again in 4k to be sure it wasn't a problem with my TV.

Also, the extended zoom feature in the Samsung s23 ultra is grossly underrated. It has helped me so much in identifying road signs, sign posts, plate numbers and reading objects at a distance my normal eyes can't see and saving me the stress of walking a longer distance.

Between these 2 there is no wrong choice honestly. I personally believe we’ve come to a point where the cameras are so evenly matched that it’s no longer a gap that’ll make one noticeably better than the other. That being said this video helped me make my choice between the 2 phones ( currently on a 14 pro max ) and I think id be giving the 23 ultra a go, the pics imo were slightly better and more of my taste while the 15 pro max has better video. I take photos more than videos so id lean more towards the ultra.

Thanks for the review, interesting to see as an s23 ultra user. At time of purchase I found slight edge to Samsung for photos and slight edge to iPhone for video. Seems iPhone have made further improvements. Ultimately, I'm really happy and I find the 10x zoom great for conferences and wildlife. Personally I would not zoom 10x in dark, but appreciate the thorough review and tests and was surprised at the quality of the 5x zoom despite preferring the 3x and 10x combo. I hope samsung add auto portrait mode as an update as that would be brilliant, but may be forced to wait until s24. For me I update every 3-4 years so time will tell 😎

Thanks Saf for the comprehensive review on the cameras. However, it would had been great to have some pics/video comparison of human subjects indoors. I've seen some reviews in which i15 doesn't fare that very well in medium to low light indoor situations. More comparison between the 2 cams on human subjects would be good to add within your review. On the following time frame of your review 5.55/7.30/14.30/18.45 I felt the dynamic range was rather off, making you look so artificially tanned. Just didn't seem natural, at least to me. I've also seen similar results on other reviews especially, when shots were taken indoors. Iphone 14 doesn't seem to have that issue. Hope, Apple will be able to fix this if indeed, ppl find it awkward. Once again, thanks for the review and more indoors please. Cheers!

As always I appreciate your camera comparisons so much for these devices. Nice to see that they are both awesome but in very different situations. I wish Samsung allowed slow mo and some of the other lenses to be used in more modes. It does look like their software processing is improving especially since say the Note 20 Ultra up to now. They fixed the focal length issues almost entirely for close ups on the S23 Ultra. I hated that my Note 20 Ultra has such issues when focusing on text since I often need to take photos up close of labels in telecom rooms or at user's office spaces for serial numbers or ports on systems and displays. I've been a Samsung user for a long time but I do want to test the iPhone for my next possible purchase when my S23 Ultra is old.

So whatever each of these phones lacked, you can improve it with some manual editing. -SInce the September update the S23U also supports 2x lossless zoom as well as 2x portraits. -When shooting night photos with telephoto lenses, S23U will default to the main camera and use digital zoom (Auto lens switching is on), so actually you have been using digital zoom from the main lens. You can use Camera Assistant (it's now integrated in the camera settings) to disable the Auto lens switching... -When shooting night video, there is a visible stutter on iPhone - which is unussual. That obviously means that the iPhone lowers the FPS to soak up more light. That's why the video looks a bit brighter. There is an option in the S23U camera settings which enables Auto FPS - that helps in the low light somewhat...

The aperture value is not noted on the Apple website for the 5x lens. However, one must multiply the crop factor by this aperture, say f/2.8, to get the full-frame equivalent. That might be around f/20. This would mean that depth of field is effectively infinity and that Apple is really applying computational photography to achieve the bokeh effect for the 5x lens.

Yeah, but dont forget the S23's is 7.2 stops more than it's stated F4.9, which i cant actually find a chart that goes that high, but it is apparently f627 (ish), as the sensor is smaller than the iphone too, so it's about f4.9 + 7.2 stops. The bokeh effect might not be real, but you can see why in low light the 5x zoom on the iphone destroys the 10x zoom on the samsung. (Although I am not 100% sure on exactly whether that figure only relates to DOF measurements, or whether it is an indication of overall light transmission too). I would love to see if Samsung can either increase the sensor size, and open the aperture, or if they can try make a tetraprism 10x in the same way apple have.

There is an option in the S23U camera settings which enables Auto FPS - that helps in the low light somewhat.You can also change the location of the focus and add it after taking the photo In settings, you can speed up capture, and there is Expert RAW that enables you to better control the pro settings.

There are some pretty huge differences in quality on the video and photos are still noticeable. The Samsung was better in exactly 1 normal photo and 1 audio clip, plus the 10x regular light shots. Otherwise, the 15 Pro Max clobbered it and it wasn’t close. Plus, Pro RAW is still vastly better than any of the RAW images an Android can take, and I like to edit most of my photos so that’s a huge plus.

Much better camera balance with all the lenses vs Samsung. iPhone is definitely the video king without a question. Everything is solid. To contrast for the last one, the audio comparison. I like the iPhone's wide and dynamic sound when it comes to listening to the audio. With the S23 Ultra it sounded slightly muffled and like the EQ was completely trashed when they process the audio. Less crispy voice, less shine to the tone. But that is the cost that comes with noise cancellation and it sounds like this is software noise cancellation which tends to suck. Can be improved if you import it into software and edit the eq of the attached audio independently and re-merge them but dude come on 💀.

In video same thing, the video is good but appear soft and flat compared to the more vivid and contrast iPhone and pixel. Hey Saf, can you explain how the ability to turn any shot into a portrait shot after the fact on the new iPhone is different than what's available on a pixel? Is the iPhone doing something more that I don't understand?

Vor 2 Monate
@Iamsam526
@Iamsam526

Yes, iPhone is using depth mapping data captured by multiple lenses to create bokeh for portraits. This information is automatically collected now without portrait mode being selected. Other phones that offered this post editing bokeh were just trying to make a “cutout” of the subject matter and then blur the rest.

Vor 2 Monate
@CaseyDarwin
@CaseyDarwin

@@Iamsam526 sounds right. I know that other phones with multiple lenses do this as well when portrait mode is selected, including the pixel. So it sounds like the big difference is the iPhone detecting when portrait mode would be useful and automatically collecting the depth data. But realistically that extra info really only helps make a more accurate cut out. No matter how you slice it, the portrait mode on smartphones is relying on computational smarts. And I got to say even my regular photos that I later add the portrait blur to really don't look any different than if I had used the dedicated portrait mode.

How do you intend to break this duopoly? Which other cameras outside these 2 are comparable? You have done a great job in this comparison however. It's properly informative.

Good review! Very sad that Apple refuses to get close to the Galaxy with a great telephoto camera. With the s24 Ultra, Samsung will have put Apple behind with four models in a row. I use my s21 for shots of deer and foxes in the woods behind our house, my kids performing in school events, beautiful cloud formations or mountain views and, yes, the Moon. Apple strategy is to dribble out upgrades. I'd hoped to get the 15 Pro Max to sync with my MacBook Air M1 and iPad. (I also have an old iPhone SE.) But I'm leaning towards waiting another year to see if Apple finally comes through.

Iphone clearly won this test. And samsung is going to use 5x and 50mp next year. Reportedly, the S24 Ultra will feature two zoom lenses: a 10 MP 3x zoom camera, and a 50 MP 5x zoom lens. The 50 MP sensor on the 5x zoom lens is said to have a 1/2.52-inch size and 0.7μm pixels.

Honestly, the s23 ultra has shown me how much contrast the iPhone 15 is using the s23 ultra look a lot more natural to me. I remember when samsung could never come close to the iPhone in camera comparison, the iPhone time is over in having the best camera in the market

That's true iPhones camera has always been better but the price matters and often times iPhone adds fake colours that don't really fit unless you're planning on uploading it to Ur IG
