@Blaisem ur broken, fuck all this optimal lines shit. use common sense and you will understand. You see a rook, its not defended, you think about taking it, you second check and wonder why would he do that, you make sure that there is nothing stopping you from taking it, you take it thinking Magnus made a mistake. Not taking free material if u are sure its fine, is plain stupidity. You are never going to play vs someone who could actually find a mate like this, so just take it. Suspicion isnt a factor in chess, the only things that matter for you to make a move are where the pieces are and how much do you have on the clock. If you really found that "better" line, go see a chess engine vs chess engine game, its pure absurdity. Dont always look at the evaluation bar for reference. It looks into the future too much and it misses the fact that you arent a computer, neither is your opponent. TLDR Everyone plays what makes sense to them, the engines dont have sense, dont trust the engine, cuz if a super gm falls for this, so will every other chess player in the world ever
Vor Monat
Blaisem
@Ned Cassley I went through like 5 comment chains trying to figure this out, and every single reply explaining it didn't capture the full picture. The key missing idea for me was that the defense we saw in the video is not optimal, because the knight recaptures the rook. If the knight didn't recapture the rook, then we would see a different defensive line play out that would stop the mate. In this better defensive line, the rook on f4 is essential. Not because it finds mate, but because it secures a +1.5 advantage for black. However if the knight recaptures, then the better defensive line is not an option anymore. This is where I was getting hung up, because I saw that better defensive line but didn't understand how the rook on f4 still made it losing for white. Here's the long story with engine analysis assuming optimal play from both sides (Stockfish 15, D20): If Magnus doesn't offer to sac the rook on f4, then after 1. Qxb3+ Ke1 2. Nc2+ RxNc2 3. QxRc2, White can play Be3 for Luft and be perfectly fine (Stockfish says +0.4 for white). White lost the exchange and a couple of pawns, but won the black Bishop, and white is now defending f4 with its black bishop. The key moves here are RxNc2 and Be3 for Luft to stop any forced mate or losing position. This is the winning defense that, if Magnus didn't take on f4 with the rook, would have completely shut down the attack we saw. However, if Magnus does offer the rook sac on f4 before Qxb3+, then white has 2 choices: either Nb3xRf4 to recapture the rook (shown in the video) or move the queen to save the queen (e.g., Qh5). If Nb3xRf4, then after 1. Qxb3+ Ke1 2. Nc2+, white can no longer play RxNc2 because of 3. Qb1+ Rc1 4. QxRc1#. The knight is not on d3 anymore to defend Rc1 to block Qb1+. On the other hand, if white doesn't play RxNc2, then the line in the video plays out and white is also in forced checkmated. So it's forced mate either way, because white recaptured the rook. Now, if white _doesn't_ recapture the rook sac but instead saves the queen with Qh5, then after 1. Qxb3+ Ke1 2. Nc2+ RxNc2 3. QxRc2, white does still successfully stop the mate. Unfortunately, the problem is that white can no longer play Be3 for Luft, because the black rook is still on f4 covering the f2 Luft square. White is instead forced to play pawn to e3, chasing black's rook on f4 back and giving the white king Luft on e2. At this point white has lost the pawn on f4, the bishop on f2 is pretty bad, and the king has a huge weakness on the light squares, giving black a +1.5 advantage. That's all. No mate. In summary, _if_ white defends properly, then all that Rxf4 accomplishes is to get a free pawn and induce a weakness in white's position. It's not mate, just an incremental advantage of +1.5. It should _not_ be a Rook sac, because white recapturing the rook is a blunder that leads to mate.
Vor Monat

That was such a good play. Straight bamboozled him into that checkmate.

@Chandler Ryan There's a pawn on g5 that will take back the Queen, making a losing trade of a Queen for a Rook which any decent player will convert let alone Carlsen. Technically it's a better move than taking with the Knight because it loses slower, but I'd guess that the opponent just didn't see that taking with the knight led to a mate in 5.
Vor Monat
Blaisem
@Chandler Ryan If the queen takes the rook, then the queen is captured by the pawn and Magnus trades a rook for a queen and a pawn --> easy win.
Vor Monat
Chandler Ryan
@RDO Music then why take with the knight? What about the queen right next to the rook? What If that takes it instead?
Vor Monat
RDO Music
The Knight is an important defender of the Rook on c1. Removing it allows the checkmate to happen. If Carlsen didn't sacrifice the rook, then after Queen takes b3, King to e1, Knight c2 and Rook takes c2, Queen to b1 is no longer checkmate (unlike the line Levy showed) because the Rook can move back to c1 where it is defended by the knight, blocking the checkmate. Without the knight, the rook can no longer block Queen b1 checkmate because it isn't defended so the Queen could just take it.

@Guruh Adi Putra Then pawn takes Queen. Decisive advantage for black. At their level, it is an automatically win.
Vor MonatДенислав Аргиров
Vor MonatBlaisem
Vor MonatMoreSalad
That was such a good play. Straight bamboozled him into that checkmate.
Vor MonatMr Green
The rook sac changed literally nothing about the smothered mate sequence since Qxb3+. This video was misleading.

Vor MonatRandom_Person
I dont see any reason why he sacrificed that rook he could have done the same without- Please sumone tell me what im missing🥺
Vor MonatRDO Music
@Chandler Ryan There's a pawn on g5 that will take back the Queen, making a losing trade of a Queen for a Rook which any decent player will convert let alone Carlsen. Technically it's a better move than taking with the Knight because it loses slower, but I'd guess that the opponent just didn't see that taking with the knight led to a mate in 5.
Vor MonatBlaisem
@Chandler Ryan If the queen takes the rook, then the queen is captured by the pawn and Magnus trades a rook for a queen and a pawn --> easy win.
Vor MonatChandler Ryan
@RDO Music then why take with the knight? What about the queen right next to the rook? What If that takes it instead?
Vor MonatRDO Music
The Knight is an important defender of the Rook on c1. Removing it allows the checkmate to happen. If Carlsen didn't sacrifice the rook, then after Queen takes b3, King to e1, Knight c2 and Rook takes c2, Queen to b1 is no longer checkmate (unlike the line Levy showed) because the Rook can move back to c1 where it is defended by the knight, blocking the checkmate. Without the knight, the rook can no longer block Queen b1 checkmate because it isn't defended so the Queen could just take it.

Chess enthusiasts be like: "Taking the bishop leads to a Modjillio manuver, which then smoothly transitions into a double-triple-leap-fakeout attack, forcing the other bishop into a difficult position in which they must cast expecto patronum. This, however, completes the ancient chess ritual created by the grey knights, which in turn causes the enemy king & their player to be permanently banished from this plane of existence."
