Originally from Nashville, Tennessee, we got married June 2013 and quickly caught the travel bug! We started “travel hacking” & finally decided we wanted to travel for one year. After 2 years of saving $ and over 2 million miles and points, we sold our cars and apartment and left home January 10, 2016. We started this DE-film channel to share our experiences with friends and family, then decided we really liked vlogging and traveling! So we extended our 1 year trip to now FOUR years :) Now we have a goal of traveling to 100 countries before 2020! We are incredibly thankful to do something we love every day. :)

Just because you can do this hike alone, doesn't mean you have to do it. I live there and these mountains / glaciers can be dangerous terrain. Each year there are (deadly) accidents and people fall into these crevasses. Most ppl. who go there are either experienced or take a guide (and always have the right equipment).

@Julie Элизабет They did the Mount Everest Base Camp Trek. They didn't climb to the very peak. Btw I did the MBC Trek too and I climbed glaciers in the Swiss, Austrian, German and Italian Alps. The Everest BC Trek is very commercialized and has super easy access. Also, it has no crevasses around the Trek. Everest BC is child's play compared to a lot of the Treks in the Alps, especially this one. The only dangerous part about Everest is the last part, the peak and the altitude in general. The altitude is where lots of climbers overdo it and overestimate their ability. Since the Alps aren't so high the danger doesn't come with the altitude but with the terrain for which you need a much higher skill level for then for the Base Camp.

Guys, I am from Zermatt and an active mountaineer. Even your tour seems easy, you took quite some risk. I strongly recommend you to take a tour guide next time. Weather can change super fast and you lose orientation. A fall in to a crevasse can be deadly. They can be deep, run under the glacier and be filled with water. Easy to drawn. Take care.

Vor 3 years

@Dis Donc! yes indeed i was talking about that one! Its been a couple years now though since i've done it(6), my family doesnt feel fit enough to do it because its quite the trail when u dont regularly do training. On this glacier there are almost no crevasses and certainly no snow in summer so we're doing a good job then i guess :) lets hope i can do it again next year, its the most beautiful trail in the area for me there

Vor 2 Tage
Dis Donc!
Dis Donc!

@mrsepox I think you might be talking about the glacier to the Brittannie hut. It really depends a lot on the glacier and conditions. With small crevasses and a flat glacier with no snow on it no risk. But if you're not used to crampons (if you need them) and there are big crevasses to cross, there surely is a risk that you end inside one. And the weather part: Yes, there are poles but with thick fog you won't be able to see them.

Vor 2 Tage

I’m from Greenland and I can only say the same. Too many tourists no matter the level of experience are unfamiliar with the terrain.

Vor 10 Monate
Dis Donc!
Dis Donc!

@mrsepox Nope, it depends. Blue-white paths which don't cross glaciers are supposed to be okay to go alone. On glaciers there is always a risk depending on the specific conditions and your experience. You CAN take the risk (which on marked trails is very small compared to other routes over glaciers), but there is still a risk. But there are glaciers which are safe to cross, because they don't have crevasses or only very small ones. But if you're not experienced walking with crampons, like in this video, jumping over these crevasses unsecured... you just never know. If the glacier doesn't have snow on it at all, though, the risk is almost zero for hidden crevasses. The glacier to the Brittannia hut is okay or the one to the Bordier hut as well. The problem is, the signs don't tell you whether it's a "safe" glacier or not. But there aren't many marked glacier trails that are not safe to go alone. The one to the Monte-Rosa hut however is one of them.

You're so lucky this ended so well. You were prepared so badly and obviously have no experience in glacier hiking. I'm outraged at the local authorities and the shop owner who let this happen. This is no joke and could've ended so badly. I live in Switzerland and deadly accidents in alpine hiking sadly are a weekly occurrence. This video had all the right ingredients to be the next disaster. Everyone DON'T TRY SUCH A HIKE ON YOUR OWN.

This is a dangerous crossing, it's long and when you get caught in a summer storm you will crap your pants, done it many times as a acclimatization hike but always with one or two of my climbing mates and roped up and remember those choppers don't fly for free if you don't have insurance it will set you back a few thousand dollars. My advice, hire a guide

The health insurance usually pays 2/3 of a rescue flight, I experienced it myself. A flight costs around 3000 to xy francs (depending on condition). So you have to be ready to pay at around 1000 francs. If you are a Rega sponsor, they will carry the rest.

Kids, don’t try this at home. Normally, there are guides and ropes and equipment for this sort of glacier crossing. Those crevasses are hundreds of feet deep and the ice is visibly rotted and melting. I’m shocked that they allow people on that glacier in summer... one wrong step and you’re not just injured, you’re gone... no funeral, just a memorial... I’ve been on that glacier but in winter with a guide and ropes and such... I’ve looked into one of those crevasses and they are deeper than you can imagine...

Wow! I just started to follow these two adventurers and was about to give them props! Then I started to read the comments ! I have never hiked a Glacier in my life so I have no concept of what is needed and what precautions to take. Kara and Nate had literally no proper gear according to most comments here; they took this hike as the hikes I weekly take here in Oakland CA (just need hiking shoes and maybe poles). I enjoyed the video because it seemed adventurous and I’m that kind of person but honestly I was not aware that they did this hike completely the wrong way, unprepared; I guess the video does not really tell the full story (dangers). Thanks 🙏🏽 everyone for keeping us all aware of the dangers, this is much appreciated. To Kara and Nate... hey I just joined your channel. The video, the experience, your enthusiasm is amazing which is why I joined your channel, please keep making amazing videos. Please stay safe! So incredibly dangerous hiking glaciers. Being properly equipped and prepared for sudden changes in the weather while hiking in mountainous terrain is essential.

It actually is pretty reckless - another Swiss on here gave a link to an article where a 17 year old Japanese tourist died last year at the same hut they went to - just wearing crampons / he was told by the hut manager that his equipment was inadequate and fell into a crevasse because he went back into the glacier while waiting for the helicopter, those poles also mean something - they are blue which means Alpine trail - ropes, pick, crampons, compass, and experienced mountain hikers only - the fact that they aren’t saying anything about that and that they aren’t carrying the equipment leads me to believe they didn’t know- why encourage dangerous behavior, you are absolutely right

They needed more than poles. They should have had ice axe, rope , prussics/ascender, ice screw etc etc. They were completely unequipped for the trip in both kit and knowledge. Crossing glacier requires experience, planning, rope and few other equipment. In these mountain weather can change really fast. In thick fog its hard to see cracks and crevasse. Also can loose the sense of direction. These crevasse can go super deep and can be full of ice cold water at the bottom. I bet you guy didn't carry a sat phone either for rescue. Extremely irresponsible to traverse a glacier unroped and without proper equipment. Especially in the afternoon, on a hot day like this. On a glacier you use "bridges" to cross over crevasses and in such weather the are likely to be weakened by heat. People, don't do this, they were incredibly lucky the didn't get injured or worse.

If there ARE bridges to be used on such a route, then it's correct what you're saying. But there are glaciers without such bridges. If there is no snow on the glacier, they are safe to cross if they don't have big crevasses.

WOW!!!!! Oh my lordy!!! I was trembling all the way while you were hiking up that glacier. The first time I walked on a glacier up in AK, i was unprepared totally. Wore shorts, took a fall, and the glacier ice stuck to my skin, literally burning my shins. Painful!!! Never mind those crevasses....was told of a few stories by our friends/who were guides with Kennicott Guides...that people disappear if they fall into one of those. Please consider your parents & family members when you take such scary risks. Consider how they would feel if anything happened to you out there in dangerous terrain. May you stay safe on your way down and always!!!

Mountain can be extremely dangerous, you can't image how many people lost their life there. Next time try to be more careful and go with an expert (alpin guide). My parents told me not to take risk with the mountain. I'm Swiss. 🇨🇭

We have very similar system of mountains, cabins and routes in Norway. Look up Faneråkhytta! Also the Jotunheimen area in general. We have fjords too 😊 You are most welcome. I look forward to watch it and really identify with this feeling of being one with the nature!

Dear Kara and Nate I live in Switzerland nearby and done my fair share of hiking in high alpine regions. I have a wish to you: Please set a better example to your 750k subscribers. People die and get seriously hurt each year in the mountains because they behaved exactly like you did. You were badly equiped, have no experience in these conditions on a glacier, obviously far too little experience to plan your route and the time required correctly and left far too many factors to pure luck. I promise you: The mountains can be experienced in an incredible way and you obviously are physically fit enough to do this route. But please take a guide next time you go onto a glacier. It takes experience to do this properly and by risking your own health and life you also risk those who will come for your rescue. Again, please be a better example, respect the mountain and its dangers. Then you can enjoy many adventures also for the next years.

Yes, they should be more responsible and show more respect to there fans, there making it look easy which can make others do it, but them not knowing it’s very struggling and hard, they are just obv, excited but they should some more respect, so yes but they’re allowed to have fun tho to.
