I’ve actually built something like this in the past. One of the rotating wheels has to be sprung loaded agains the ball - so the passage of the ball pushes past the rollers. The spinning of the wheels is enough to feed the ball through. I hope that makes sense? I actually used gravity acting on a swing arm that held the motor and the wheel but a spring could be used instead.

Very cool! So many things one could try out to improve the design. I think the slipping is caused by the ball dropping too slowly onto the wheels and then the fast spinning wheels only have a millisecond or so to accelerate the ball. So you could try out to have the balls drop faster onto the wheels already (airpressure?) or increase the time it takes to accelerate the ball. So perhaps 3 sets of wheels each with increasing speed would accelerate the ball more gently and also be able to put more energy in it.

Hello There
I may be a bit late, however, there is a wheel in competitive robotics called a compliant wheel, which is a wheel that can comply to the shape of the object it is rolling on. Using a medium to lower durometer compliant wheel would help with the traction problem you are having without the need to rebuild the entire setup.

Vor year

I knew at first that those kind of wheels will be the problem. I think a simple conventional air filled wheels will do the job, but it'll be a bit heavier and maybe that's the point, portability. Still a really really cool project🔥
Vor year
Hunter Wall
for indexing the balls out of the hopper one at a time you could probably make a simpler setup that uses the same mechanism as pinball machines - Wintergatan did a video not too long ago on his newer marble feed gates that used the same design. They look like super-wide-mouthed pacmans. Also you might have less of an issue with the balls getting shredded if you gradually accelerated them. A baseball normally gets accelerated from zero to a hundred over the whole arc of a thrower's arm motion - you might want to maybe have several wheel sizes, geared together so they spin at the same rotational speed but increasing surface travel speeds. One set would pitch to the next set basically. If you can get ~70mph increase per set of wheels without it stripping the covers off, that's only 3 sets of wheels to get over 200mph.

PAPO1990
The nerf modding community has been dealing with similar problems for YEARS, I'm sure there's already a solution to get those balls launching harder, Concave wheels are just ONE, also using softer balls would probably help too, but you might have to consider having 2 stages of flywheels, the first stages gets the ball going, then the second stage really kicks the speed up a notch.
Vor year
PAPO1990
@Rattytherat you're a springer/ HPA stop aren't you? :P but for real, I doubt a baseball would seal properly in a barrel with the stitching and everything, probably barrel-drag problems too, flywheels are probably the best option for launching a baseball at high velocity.

I think that in fully automatic a legend could aim for the 3rd ball using the first 2 to predict where and when it would be, getting a single chance at a very difficult but arguably possible play. I think 3 separate individual shots are better against someone with that strategy in mind, being arguably impossible to hit unless one could use the action of whoever triggering the device to fire for timing and I honestly don't know how you'd get the location accurate but only getting lucky in one way to hit is still better than 2.

great job.. a couple of points.. number one.. your wheel on the top should actually be positioned on the bottom .. the way a ball is thrown the pitcher creates backspin going from the bottom forward on the ball not the top.. second.. by putting a heavily textured surface on the wheels will increase the friction giving greater velocity.. and third by using a softer ball you are hurting the performance of the "pitch" a harder ball will not absorb as much of the energy creating less of a damping effect on the kinetic energy....

You need to do a two stages launcher; first stage pushes the ball at half speed to the second stage that propells the ball to the maximum speed, or using a belt corridor propeller instead of wheels

Obviously, one reason why the balls were slipping was because it was accelerating too fast, so if there was a second set of slower wheels behind the faster ones, it would probably slip less (but weigh more)
Vor year
EV Components Review (De-bodgery)
The amount of time for acceleration is too short. You need to speed the ball along twice or 3 times. Each step accelerates them a bit more. I bet your wheels surfaces are moving at 2-3X more speed than the ball. There's just not enough time for the balls to match wheel speed.

Hey what if you had multiple rows of spinners that each progressed in speed? The ball would enter through the first row of spinners that are slow enough to not shred the ball; now the ball is already moving as it proceeds to the next line of spinners that are faster than the previous spinners and since the ball is already moving fast there should be less friction and still allow for the ball to go even faster. I dono how many rows of spinners you'd need but I feel like this would work?

Hey Ian, what about swapping out the wheels with some sort of tripple belt driven system? Could reduce rotational weight and also allow more prolonged contact with the ball to actually get it to speed and reduce slippage.

Vor yearZünder
Vor yearS Lapain
I appreciate that you show the iteration process and looks amazing. Get well Hacksmith

When you aim it at 45 degrees you can see the balls going to the back of the pipe .you should of included a spring mechanism that would keep pushing the balls to the pushing rotating gear that way you can also shoot while aiming at 45 degrees

I may be a bit late, however, there is a wheel in competitive robotics called a compliant wheel, which is a wheel that can comply to the shape of the object it is rolling on. Using a medium to lower durometer compliant wheel would help with the traction problem you are having without the need to rebuild the entire setup.
Vor yearNitro Wolf

Vor yearIsaac Graphics
I'd love to see a video where you increase the acceleration distance. A rail-gun arrangement with rows of smaller motors might not tear the ball apart so much.
Vor yeararian sevandal
I knew at first that those kind of wheels will be the problem. I think a simple conventional air filled wheels will do the job, but it'll be a bit heavier and maybe that's the point, portability. Still a really really cool project🔥
Vor yearHunter Wall
for indexing the balls out of the hopper one at a time you could probably make a simpler setup that uses the same mechanism as pinball machines - Wintergatan did a video not too long ago on his newer marble feed gates that used the same design.
Vor yearOliver Erlandsson

You need to tack them up with some clay or what they call "dyno sauce" for car and motorcycle dynamometers or something. Do that, use regular hardness balls, and then set the motors to max except the bottom left one (from shooter's perspective) which should be at half, for the ultimate curveball.
Vor 2 TagePAPO1990
The nerf modding community has been dealing with similar problems for YEARS, I'm sure there's already a solution to get those balls launching harder, Concave wheels are just ONE, also using softer balls would probably help too, but you might have to consider having 2 stages of flywheels, the first stages gets the ball going, then the second stage really kicks the speed up a notch.
Vor yearPAPO1990
@Rattytherat you're a springer/ HPA stop aren't you? :P but for real, I doubt a baseball would seal properly in a barrel with the stitching and everything, probably barrel-drag problems too, flywheels are probably the best option for launching a baseball at high velocity.

Maybe automatic feed into a slower flywheel before ejection? Giving the ball a little speed before it hits the big flywheels won’t subject the ball to such crazy acceleration and friction. Might just have to have two sets of flywheels. Great idea! Wish I had that in little league!

I recommend a hand guard for the front hand. Edit: also try spiked wheels for better grip.
Vor yearCasey Christensen
To fix the balls getting chewed up by the wheels, increase the feed speed, not the feed rate though. So have 6 wheels total, 3 slower ones feeding into 3 fast ones
Vor yearIAMASITUATION
If you try to use a rim and tire setup instead with them a bit closer together. The tire will compress slightly increasing the contact surface dramatically. This may solve your problems.

great job.. a couple of points.. number one.. your wheel on the top should actually be positioned on the bottom .. the way a ball is thrown the pitcher creates backspin going from the bottom forward on the ball not the top.. second.. by putting a heavily textured surface on the wheels will increase the friction giving greater velocity.. and third by using a softer ball you are hurting the performance of the "pitch" a harder ball will not absorb as much of the energy creating less of a damping effect on the kinetic energy....
Vor yearRoberMC
You need to do a two stages launcher; first stage pushes the ball at half speed to the second stage that propells the ball to the maximum speed, or using a belt corridor propeller instead of wheels
Vor yearIm A Fanboy
Oh boi, the endless possibilities with this machine 🤤
Vor 22 TageCasey Bieker
I think a fair amount of pro baseball players train with either a pitching machine closer in to provide “over speed” training or use a tennis ball launcher at well over 100mph.

Maybe it would work better if you had a second set of wheels before the main wheels to pre accelerate it. So the main wheels don't need as much friction force to accelerate the ball and stop them from burning it up.

The wheels need to have some give to them to keep them from shredding the ball. Look at pitching machines. And what wheels they use. Would love to see a version 2.

Vor yearFiremaistro
I like how they wear protective gear for the baseball machine even though the balls go slower than a professional mba pitcher
Vor yearprOscrUx Tj
I'm not an engineer, but I think you should've put "shock breakers" or some kind of big springs on each of the wheels, so that the wheel would adjust to the ball's width and pinch the ball when it came through. So there would be less scraping? IDK, just a thought.

Obviously, one reason why the balls were slipping was because it was accelerating too fast, so if there was a second set of slower wheels behind the faster ones, it would probably slip less (but weigh more)
Vor yearEV Components Review (De-bodgery)
