Drew Gooden would honestly be a pretty good writer, or maybe even cast member for SNL. His sense of humor is quirky and weird enough to appeal to a younger demographic than a lot of the usual "targeted audience" snl has, but still has enough general appeal to make his humor accessible to a wide audience. In performance terms, I haven't really seen him act a role other than himself, but... well, there have been a LOT of SNL cast members who only ever really played themselves, or barely disguised versions of themselves. For a current example, Pete Davidson (whom I adore - he is hilarious, even as Chad despite Chad being way overused); for a more classic example, think of Adam Sandler. Sure, Sandler had "characters" but they were never really anything on the level of the characters that a performer like Kenan Thompson or Kate McKinnon or Tina Fey or Will Ferrel could bring out... and sometimes, the less character-focused cast members like Davidson or Sandler are still BETTER than ones that are more character focused (think Chris Kattan or Jimmy Fallon). So, yeah. Lorne, since I know for a fact that you have been internet stalking me since 2009, take my advice here - at least bring Drew in for an audition.

Vor Monat
Commander862
Commander862

@pillbugm I haven't finished the video, but I got to the 2000s and so far the only reference to Norm (that I caught) was saying that he was fired. Now, I have a few issues with this. 1. I love Norm. I love his comedy and I wish he were still here to make us laugh with his unique style. The only issue with this is that Drew talked about Norm as if he barely knew who he was (or at least that's the impression I got; I feel like if he knew much about Norm he would have at least mentioned the offensive jokes when he stated that Norm was fired). I really don't think this is a big problem though, especially since I could be wrong. 2. Its a youtube video... most fans don't care about the length. He could have extended the video out another few seconds to talk more about Norm. Even if he was worried about the length, he could have cut out some of the parts where he played clips from the show and explained the joke of the skit (and why he didn't think it was funny). Really, my point here is that Norm is something that he easily could have talked more about and if the video were too long I feel like Norm would be cut from the video after a lot of the things that are still in the video. 3. Drew talks a lot about his favorite comedians from the show. He even paused to talk about some of his favorites and why he liked them. Not only that, but it frequently listed cast members/comedians from the show. So, while the comedians aren't the main topic of this video, Drew could have included Norm without deviating from the tone and direction of the video much. 4. The comedians are a big part of SNL. They define a good portion of the show. This is why Drew spends so much time talking about them. You can see the evolution of SNL through the skits and the jokes that the comedians tell. So, it stands to reason that such a unique and beloved comedian as Norm should have been included more, at the very least to show the state of SNL at the time. In conclusion, Norm should have been included more because time doesn't appear to be an issue and the SNL comedians show the evolution of SNL because they reflect the state of the show.

Vor Monat
pillbugm

I mean the video's already pretty long and he was probably trying to condense the video. Its not really about which comedians are the best but the evolution of SNL. Better not speculate about his personal feelings on each comedian.

I think a lot of the people who say that grew up on 90's SNL and reruns of 90's SNL. It's never exactly been good, but it is funny, especially to younger people who are experimenting with their own comedy style. I'm pretty sure the funniest SNL will ever be is the series you watched when you were 14, and some of those jokes will stick with you forever. I will always remember the making of Titanic sketch. They ask the actress playing Kate Winslet how working with James Cameron is, and she says "oh he's an AMAZING director. He'd always be saying things like 'More Water!', or 'this isn't turn of the century water, this is 90's water! Get it out of here!" I say that every time my water gets a hair in it and I have to dump it out. It's hilarious to me, and I can't fully explain why.

I remember growing up during the Sandler/Farley/Myers and Ferrell era and seeing Samberg, Sudeikis and Hader make their debuts in high school. That was the first time they debuted the digital shorts, as that wasn't really a thing in the 90s SNL, the prefilmed sketches were usually parodies of ads. So Lonely Island gets credit for creating that particular segment, they didn't "save" that segment from anything.

I came of age watching SNL off and on from the early to mid 80's and that was the standard I measured the show by Joe Piscopo, Eddie Murphy, Brad Hall. I liked the Mr. Bill Show, Mr. Robinson's neighborhood, and some skit with superheroes with Mr. Hall being a superhero who had the power to staple himself to things and did so to a chair. I was somewhat entertained by the earlier generation Garret Morris, Gilda Radner, Dan Ackroyd but found those a bit odd, dated, and frantic energy wise (Looking at you Steve Martin). I was not a fan of the jokes about race as they were off the mark and not funny. Not a big fan of Land Shark. I stopped watching regularly in college in 88 and 89 and found the next generation Sandler, Schneider, juvenile and off-putting. I would pick it up from time to time and I did like the Funmation films (The Ambiguously Gay Duo) some Tina Fey, Andy Samberg, Phil Hartman and some mid to late 90's female cast members.

I also feel like the "SNL was funnier in my day" comes from how TV used to be watched. When I was a teenager I would stay up late and watch with my sisters. On more then one occasion we wouldn't laugh during the episode but then talk about the skit so much that it became funnier in hindsight because it became an inside joke with my sisters. Also there was less content out in the world so it was more likely my friends where watching SNL. If I missed that weeks episodes, I couldn't always find them on YouTube, I would just be out of the joke that week. My point is SNL was funnier when my friends and family watched SNL because sharing a joke with someone is funnier than laughing and a screen alone in your bedroom.

@Jace N I started watching SNL at the first episode in 1975, my last year of high school and first year of college. I worshiped that show and the people on it. Watch today, though, and it just doesn't hold up all that well. It was something brand new back then and it was really better than so much of the dreck comedy that was on TV at the time. It was a fresh phenomenon and that's part of why we loved it so much. We rooted for them to be good and we were occasionally rewarded.

@Jace N SNL has always been hit or miss, stop lying to yourself on that. The only different between now and 20 years and even 50 years ago is number of choices besides SNL. It was the go-to on basic network TV up unto steaming and now people are crapping on because they found things more pinpoint to their interests. I don't know what you think was in the mid 2000s but it wasn't all that great either.

I'm a HUGE SNL fan. I have watched it for as long as I can remember. When I was like 6ish I used to sneak downstairs, sit on my staircase and watch it through the spindles. I wasn't allowed to be up that late or watch the show so I had to go all covert to watch along with my dad. Turns out my dad knew the whole time, he thought it was cool that i loved the show so much. Back then I loved all the physical over acting. My favorite recent sketch it John Mulaneys monkey judge. That sketch is so smartly funny, it's amazing. I would never claim that it's all amazing. In my opinion for the most part there aren't any bad seasons, but there are bad sketches or just bad whole episodes sometimes. I honestly feel like each season only has like 50% good episodes. I still watch every single episode though.

as someone who's been a longtime SNL fan and even gone so far as to go see it live back when Bill Hader hosted in 2018, but besides the comedy community i was able to find because of the show, could never pinpoint why exactly i continue to watch, this video was fantastic. it really is something about seeing young comedians come into their own, catching that niche second-to-last sketch that no one else will remember but that you'll still giggle at years down the line. no one's saying it's a perfect show, but to follow the sports metaphor, it's like watching the big leagues of college comedy and there is something fun in that

I haven't watched SNL since the early-mid 2010's, which IMO was when it was at its best. But the show has always gone through peaks and valleys. Bill Hader, Andy Samberg, Jason Sudekis, Fred Armisen, and Kristen Weig were just the AAA-Team. As for Adam Sandler, I found him hilarious at age 12-20, the moment I entered young adulthood up until my 30's I suddenly didn't find him funny anymore. He nails humor for children... and he really missed his calling doing a risque kids how. "Sometimes when I think about Modern SNL I think they're still in a transitional period" _nearly a decade has passed since the last good era_ Ah, just like me. A "transitional period" I think the thing that has caused SNL to lost most of its luster and star-making power, is that younger audiences these days have replaced SNL with youtube (hell I'm 32 and got rid of television to replace it solely with youtube over a decade ago!). I agree wholeheartedly that SNL is the same it has always been, it is society and the world that has changed. The next Adam Sandler/Will Ferrell/Eddie Murphy/ect is gonna come from those channels on the trending tab who's thumbnails give you eye-cancer. >__> It's already starting with that guy who filmed a corpse in Japan and said he didn't think It'd be a big deal to show the body in his youtube video (I am so glad I don't know his name off the top of my head XD he will forever be that corpse-filming guy to me)
