This is the worst video I've seen from you. The first 8:28, you doesn’t make any points. You waffle around saying “man wow the Switch is approaching its 6 birthday, that's nuts” which is fine. It's no big deal to say things that are known and how you feel about it in a low effort casual video like this. It's not good content, but that part of the video isn’t trying to be . You didn’t even do anything fun with on camera because you are sick or something, which is also ok and understandable but definitely hurts the video. You don't always need to. I did like some of your speculation when we might see the next console; that was pretty good. But anyway, at 8:28, when you get to the point. The point you are going to make and argue for. You say “If it is true that Nintendo will give us a brand new system next year then it's probably also true that this year will be very light, maybe not, you know maybe they'll still have plenty of games coming for switch all the way up to the new systems launch and beyond it maybe, but just looking at their history it will probably be slim pickings during the switches last year wherever whenever that may come” You then say that the next Nintendo direct is inevitably going to be soon because there are so many games coming. You mention Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, Advanced Wars, the Kirby remake, Bayonetta Origins, Octopath 2, Pikmin 4, and Metroid Prime 4. 7 Big games are coming soon. As you say “we need info. If those are going to be coming this year, then the time to give us info is pretty darn soon” You then answer the video title, explaining why this direct is REALLY important. “If it gives us a whole bunch of new games to look forward to all year including like maybe even some big stuff then we'll kind of be back to square one honestly we'll still not really know what Nintendo's plans are” “But if the direct doesn't give us much…I mean like even kind of a medium-ish amount I just if it's skewing on the side of lower sparser then I personally feel like that is all but a guarantee that we will be getting a new system next year in 2024.” Your points completely contradict the reality. Your point that this direct will tell us when the next Nintendo console is coming is completely unjustified for reasons you yourself state. This is because there is so much to show already and talk about, not to mention we can usually expect at least 1 thing that is a new announcement in these directs. We should expect the direct to have little announcements because there is ALREADY a lot. Hence, why a direct felt inevitable. This theory is ridiculous to assume that if the direct is sparse with new announcements, it is a near certainty that Nintendo will have a new console in 2024 that does not track with what is already known. It's also super annoying that you premept almost every thought with "maybe not though" as if that somehow makes your terrible point better. My main theory, and tbh I only thought of this because you said a few times in the video things indicating that the direct wasn't announced yet, is that the video we got was not totally ready. But when the direct was announced for today, you had to upload it. I really like most of your content and would hope this was just a temporary blip in quality. I'm excited to see your next upload, which I know will be better.

It's not really supposedly, as it was confirmed last June that it would come in the next 12 months.

I'm glad you're enjoying Ys Origin! It's an incredible action rpg that works great as an introduction to the series or for returning players to get all the references to Ys I&II. It's a really quality series, and I think all 10 of the canon games are a really fun time.

I believe that the reason we've heard absolutely nothing from Retro Studios is because they're putting it on the new system. So the longer that system gets delayed, the longer Retro has to go without being able to show us anything from it. Thanks, Covid! Also, all this waiting has basically killed the whole concept of "so hyped I want to avoid all spoilers" for me. I honestly don't care what they want to show me from Tears of the Kingdom at this point. I'm tired of inching closer to death while I wait for some game. Maybe it's cause I was in my 20's when BotW came out, and now, in my 30's, I foresee being in my 40's by the time the _next_ big Zelda game comes out. I just... ain't got time or energy to waste on blind hype anymore. Just hurry up and let me play the game with whatever tiny scraps and shreds of free time I have, ya know?

The series is totally worth it, Oath in Felghana is another game in the series that plays very similar to this one. And yes, I had a huge smile on my face hearing you praise Ys, it deserves the attention as the main action JRPG series from the studio that pioneered action JRPGs.

Came for the usual great commentary, screamed at the randomly awesome plug of Ys Origin!! I LOVE the Ys series so freaking much. That series is a must play. Nihon Falcom is about as solid a developer than you can find, plus they have an in house sound team called jdk and they rock so much. Listen to a few soundtracks fromt he Ys series, and they go HARD. I love them. And hey, if you love Ys, maybe you can sneak on over to the Legend of Heroes series too ;)

I have two issues with the whole “we’re getting the next Nintendo console next year” thing. 1) Furukawa himself said last year that we were halfway through the Switch’s life. 2) I feel like we would have more concrete info at this point. We knew about the Switch/NX for years before.

Counterpoint: We "knew" about it, but not because Nintendo gave us any public information. I think a lot of the info you're thinking of was actually leaks and investor documents. They literally revealed the Switch in October, had a presentation for in January, and released it in March.

The Switch successor won't even be MENTIONED officially as a thing for the future until AT LEAST 2025. The Switch is at a halfway point now. Maybe slightly later.

Interesting idea, and I think you might be right. Oh, and I am calling right now: Metroid Prime 4 first trailer releases during the direct where they announce the next system. Dread did great, and a very solid looking prime 4 trailer would have the hype train through the roof for the Super Switch or whatever it will be called. That's the Metroid prime 4 something that will happen that you predicted in your other video :)

I'm wondering if the delay of Tears of the Kingdom has anything to do with the new system, or if it's unrelated to the new system and they just need extra time to work on it. But in all seriousness, a new system might actually be likely going into next year. Although, I dread if it will be anything like the Wii U in terms of unwanted gimmicks, marketing and sales. I hope at the very least it will support proper backwards compatibility with the Switch system and not just for physical releases. But obviously, I can't forget the fact that it needs to address the drifting issues, since they've already faced legal actions for how bad it truly is.

Just finished watching the direct. Mate, I think you were SPOT ON with your prediction!

The Ys series is one of the oldest JRPG series there is; it's almost as old as Dragon Quest. All of them are about an adventurer named Adol Christin exploring places and ending up having to save the day from some ancient magical threat. The first and only one I played was Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of Dana, and, apart from a terrible out-of-nowhere plot twist at the very end of the game, it is absolutely brilliant.

Ys is a remarkable franchise! Coming in clutch on the promotion.

The announcement said it'd be around 40 minutes, and while some of the stuff we know about could end up taking a large chunk, I think they could fit some nice surprises in there. It starts right when I get off work, so I'm excited that I'll be able to just manage to catch it live.

@TCG Yeah I get you; there has been a lot of speculation recently about an incoming announcement so🤞🏻 I'd particularly like to replay Investigations and get a long, long, _long_-awaited official translation of Investigations 2, but frankly I think that ship has sailed by now😔

I mean they did the games that never got made here and they already have HD textures for them. Why not put them on the switch to complete the family. Same but I have to drive home by the time it’s almost over with I’ll get home. So…yeah. Personally some word on a port of ace attorney Apollo Justice games would be nice. I just got into that series and finished the first game last week. They are stuck on the 3ds so…it would be nice. Maybe GBA emulation but yeah that’s a big ask for them.

I don't think we'll see a June Nintendo Direct for the simple reason that Nintendo doesn't like that timing for a big blow-out. They only did it in the past because the entire industry and market expected E3 to be it but with E3 now losing its significance, Nintendo is seizing the opportunity to move on. I believe September is the time they consider optimal for their biggest Direct of the year and I think that's when we'll see it in the future.

I remember watching a video a couple years ago where arlo suggested splitting the zelda development team so half could work on an asset-reusing sequel and the other half could start the ground work for the next game. what if that is why it's taken so long to develop TotK, and we get another brand new zelda with the new console (for reference, i still think we are looking at a 2025 or 2026 release)

I am positive they will show 10-15 minutes for Zelda today. They don't have time for another direct before May and as you said Zelda HAS to have a good amount of content shown before release. And if they decide to release Prime 4 for the next generation I will be extremely peed.

As an absolute Ys maniac, Arlo just suddenly mentioning Ys Origin activated my neutrons immediately, that was such an unexpected crossover. Honestly Arlo, Ys is a rabbit hole MORE than worthy getting into, you can get most if not all of them on Steam, they're amazing games.

While I think it does seem we may get the next console next year, I was pleasantly surprised by today’s direct. Pikmin 4, Layton, a release date on Advance Wars (Q2), Metroid Prime Remaster (wish it was the trilogy though), and news on TotK.

@Observing Procrastinator I agree that Nintendo will likely continue using the “Switch” name for their newest console but I think they’re likely to name it Super Nintendo Switch. Or possibly just SuperSwitch. The word “super” is as much a part of their identity as Mario is. The only problem is that it might not be “new sounding” enough for the general public and people might assume that it’s the same system with a few minor upgrades. Either way I can’t wait to find out.

Why does the cartridge not work for switch 2? Can’t they just use larger capacity cartridges with a Switch 2 banner at the top or something?

@Qrazy Quarian Oh I agree with what you're saying, I guess my comment was more about, despite their blunder with the Wii U, I can still see Nintendo somehow fucking up.

@Observing Procrastinator tl;dr: Uninformed buyers royally screwed up the Wii U's marketing, making the naming of "Switch 2" unlikely. I 100% disagree with this, and the main reason why is because of the disaster that was the Wii U. Not trying to sound mean here, so hear me out. When the Wii U debuted there were many, many problems that caused sales to perform nearly as badly as the Sega Saturn or Virtual Boy. One of the large reasons was because it was poorly-marketed (the onus is absolutely on Nintendo for that), but it was also assumed by many that the Wii U was a simple upgrade from the Wii--a large reason for this was because of the shared name of its predacessor. In other words, the naming convention they used for the Wii U bit Nintendo in the ass. And a big reason why it hurt Nintendo but not XBox or PlayStation is because of the target market: kids. Disinterested (grand)parents who simply buy the games without understanding what consoles they're for. Imagine getting Super Smash Bros. for Wii U from your grandma, but not getting a Wii U because she thought it was for the Wii. Things like that. With Nintendo reaching out to a more adult audience this should be somewhat mitigated, but there are parents who still buy consoles and games with zero knowledge of it, and Nintendo has the biggest share of that demographic of buyers (not consumers). Long story short: Nintendo needs to make it as clear as possible that their new console is not a Switch Pro, and needs to disassociate their next console from the Switch in order to combat uninformed buyers.

If I get at least one or two things I'm excited for then it's a good direct for me!

It's worth noting that on both DS and 3DS, the second new Pokémon generation had a sequel release in each console's last year. Actually, Black 2/White 2 released a year after the release of 3DS, and Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon released 6 months after Switch released. Will Scarlet and Violet get DLC before Switch 2, or maybe even after?

Imagine what their next system could even be.

Nintendo is great at having small games and then showing us many big games out of nowhere. Can't wait to watch Nintendo YouTubers react to the direct.

It will be interesting to see how they'd launch a new console under the pressure of global supply chain/distribution challenges.

I think they can still pad the rest of the year with releases like Metroid Prime 2 & 3, HD Wind Waker and HD TP. It would also be interesting if they wanted to release their new console in time for the holiday season (if supply chain can keep up)

I'm calling it: Nintendo will have a duo of big trailers for Tears of the Kingdom just like they did for Breath of the Wild. The E3 2016 trailer focused on the gameplay and world of BotW, and the Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017 trailer focused on the story. I think they will do the same for TotK. There's going to be a gameplay focused trailer in this Direct and then a story focused one closer to launch. Maybe a third one somewhere between there, just like BotW had the "Life in the Ruins" trailer.

I think they will probably announce Prime 4 for later this year and a surprise next day drop of Tears of the Kingdom. Next they'll probably announce a new DK Country for October before Prime 4

I think you're right. If there's not much to show at this direct, then yeah, it'll be pretty clear that the Switch is on its way out soon.

I think alongside Tears of the Kingdom and Pikmin 4, this Nintendo Direct will confirm at least two major new games. The rest will likely be adding content to previous games like Splatoon 3 and Mario Kart 8. Hopefully an update for NSO. Which btw, the Switch successor needs backwards compatibility. There's so many great Switch games that it'd really kill the momentum of the new console to start from scratch again, especially since N64 games finally just came to NSO.

If we do get a new console announced, what are the chances they’ll allow us to transfer our current NSO’s before tossing in an upgrade costing 20$ extra? One thing I do hope for the new console is at least transferable saves ( if they port switch games to it either online or physical)

I personally think, if a new system was around the corner, Miyamoto would have delayed Pikmin 4 to be on it instead of the Switch, as happened with 3. I think it's likely the next console is in development, but not at a stage where it's going to come out next year.

Ys Origin is great, but Ys 8 is high on my list of all-time favorites. I've finally been going through the whole series (at least the latest versions of each entry) recently after about three decades of admiring it from afar.

@wiremesh Yeah, I've heard that Adol getting shipwrecked is his equivalent to Link needing to be woken up at the start of each Zelda game; a consistent running gag throughout most of the series.

Agree that they could have handled that better, especially since Tritheism was already established as of Ys 7, it seems like they could have fit in more mention of Maia (I think she was only briefly brought up only after the Wardens appear). Maybe a castaway that is a devout follower or something. Also Link's Awakening is one of my favorite Zeldas! It's also very Ys-like in that Link washes ashore unconscious, which is pretty much Adol's main method of transportation.

It's interesting, sure, but if you want an example of a video game that did that idea well, and two decades before Ys VIII came along, I recommend _Link's Awakening._ In that game, the Wind Fish is established from the beginning, there are real hints that the island is just a dream, and the twist happens in the middle of the game, not at the very end, enabling it to actually have a profound impact without being jarring.

@Matthew Muir I've heard this interpretation (and subsequent disappointment) of the ending before. But I think you're thinking of it wrong. It's not some "random person's" dream, it's a god's dream. I actually think dreaming as a god's method of creation is kind of interesting and, in my view, doesn't make the world any less real, or the events matter any less, as you can't really compare a god to a regular person. I actually found the ending to be very satisfyingly bittersweet (the true ending at least).

@Nat Same, though mainly because it is the _only_ Ys game I have played. That said, it had an interesting story and cast of characters, fun combat and exploration, the island was fun to explore; it was a great game overall. Unfortunately, that description has to come with a "however": however, what was the point of that twist at the end where the whole world is just some random person's dream? That was unbelievably bad and almost ruined the game for me; key word being "almost".

So I think that if they are planning to release a console they are setting up really well to have plenty at launch day, because if they were originally planning a switch pro, that means that they were potentially developing games for it that might have gotten scrapped for the new system like what if that’s why we haven’t heard anything about Metroid 4 and there’s games, Nintendo wanted to put on the switch, but just couldn’t

Now that Arlo has discovered YS, I wonder if he will play more of it. Maybe even get into Trails.

@‘merican_pig Pikmin 2 was also amazing. No 30 day count down. You Play as Olimar, Louie and the president of the company they work for lol. They each have unique whistles and the game is pretty long. You go into dungeons that have multiple floors and it tells you as you go in what pikmin elements are a must to bring with. A lot of fun, a lot of challenge. An excellent game! Really fun final boss as well!

@Gary 5642 I will say that I don’t have a Wii U and don’t have the funds to get one so I think it’ll probably be tough for me to play any Pikmin made before 3 I was just curious to see if you had played 2

While I do agree with most of your take. The fact that Zelda is the Heaviest hitter in their lineup and releasing in may leads me to believe that Nintendo can rest a bit. It will smash sales records and remain hot for weeks. If we get that band Pikmin 4.. I am good. Throw in GBA on NSO and sure.. anyway I guess I made no sense but TOTK will be Game of the year so, maybe get to our backlogs lol. Love the channel

Nice shoutout to the Ys series at the beginning! I had Ys III Wanderers From Ys on the SNES back in the day and loved it for its Zelda 2 style action RPG gameplay, and I loved Ys VI on PS2. I really need to get around to Ys VIII, I got it on Switch last year but still haven't fired it up yet even though I have like half the soundtrack memorized by now lol!

If there is a new hardware release, I just hope it's backwards compatible. My switch library is easily my most expansive since the Mega Drive/Genesis, would be good to carry it forward (either that or i'll have to contemplate getting a spare switch)

I think this direct will be very straight forward. One game each month, all the stuff we know about, advance wars and Bayonetta and Kirby. Lots of Zelda. Maybe xenoblade 3 dlc? They’ll do a later half of the year direct in June, after Zelda made its splash. They have no reason to extend beyond that. Why distract the audience? If we get a hint of new hardware it’ll either be the fall 2023 direct or some big reveal event next spring.

Oh sweet, you checked out Ys Origin! Now you should totally check out the other Ys games, they're also a lot of fun. It's with good reason that the Ys series is my absolute favorite series now. Ys 8 is my absolute favorite out of the series, and that one's also on the Switch (along with Ys 9). (And yes, you are saying "Ys" correctly - as for "what an Ys is", you'll have to play Ys 1 and Ys 2 to find out!)

Ys VIII is my favourite in the series as well, if only because it's the only one that I've actually played. In all seriousness, it is a great game: good combat and exploration, interesting story and characters, and it really is one of those games where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts; everything works together really well. There is only one problem with it, and it unfortunately is a big one in such a story-heavy game: The final plot twist at the very end of the game; the "This whole world is actually just the dream of a character you've never heard of before, and the Lacrimosa, i.e. the mass slaughter to the point of extinction of at least five sapient species, is necessary because it keeps her from getting bored and waking up" twist, is absolute _garbage._

I believe they're going to present the next gaming system until next year. Will it release the same year too? Only time will tell

Ys is great and you were spot on with pronouncing it! The Oath in Felghana is also a great Ys game that Origins uses the same engine from. Hoping the Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana gets an international release later this year.

Ys7 is my favorite and still trapped on PSP & PC. It was my first Ys game. Then I played Ys1&2 PSP. And played them mostly* in order from there.

Oath in Felghana and Ys 8 are my favs.

Call me crazy, but I actually enjoyed Ys 6 the most out of the three that used that engine, though I admit the gameplay was most refined in Origin.

It would be awesome to see one new 1st party game a month for the first twelve months of the next console release.

I expect that for next gen most games will be cross-gen, but some of the most technically demanding ones will be next-gen exclusive.
