NOTIFICATION SQUAD: What'd you reckon? Could you be placed on Oshima Island randomly and live there? I'll admit, the spiders were something of a deal breaker. Another Wacky Weekend adventure from spiders and ATV's, to volcanoes and Japanese festivals - had an absolute blast as always. Special thanks to Daniel for being such a legendary guide. And thanks to Insta360 for sponsoring the episode with the awesome Insta360 Go 3. Having used their cameras for the last 3 years on Journey Across Japan and Wacky Weekend, it was a ton of fun experimenting with what may be the ultimate travel vlogging camera. ⭐Grab yours over here at: https://store.insta360.com/product/go-3?insrc=INRF3T8&utm_source=youtube&utm_medium=KOL&utm_campaign=AbroadinJapan&utm_content=date20230917

That old Japanese woman's outlook on happiness is honestly inspirational. Happiness for her doesn't stem from convenience and luxury, rather from wholeness of life; being one with world. Truly inspirational.

Wow - this is a genuine surprise. Thanks Chris and Connor for sharing Oshima with us. I feel like next time I go to Japan, I don't need to make my way down to Okinawa but rather get the same vibes with a 30 min sauna flight instead right out of Tokyo! Love it

Hands down most unexpectedly heartfelt video I saw from Chris this whole year! Idk why, but Kiri-san, Kanagawa-san, and even the worker in the restaurant that asked for the correct word for the menu - so cute, so real! Vor 3 TageTATOOINE TABLEFLIP
I’ve been to several on my many trips over and it’s a joyous, emotional, utterly fantastic experience every single time!
Vor Tagcrallen 1197 +30
Really liked the change of pace when you interviewed Kanagawa-san, it was nice not having a video that was an all-out sprint for the entire 40 minute run time. Interviewing her was a great way to get people personally invested in the history of the island. 10/10 video 👍
Vor 3 Tagetyranitararmaldo +35
This is a perfectly quintessential video to show someone why Chris' videos are so good. You get the funny interactions between him and his friends, amazing shots, but the best part is the rapport Chris has when he talks to locals. I know it's a pain to sub it all afterwards. But it's great to hear the local knowledge, while Chris makes the other person feel comfortable with his humour (which does come through even in Japanese). Also 40 minutes?! I'm settling in for the night with this!
Vor 3 Tageiggle +1
To be honest, I find some of Chris' interactions with his friends less than funny. Connor's injury was not funny.
Vor 3 Tageleorio nayil +1
@iggle It was not on purpose. I'm sure he's sorry about this (a little at least)
Vor 2 Tageiggle
@leorio nayil It's nice that Chris has such a loyal apologist. The push was on purpose and fraught with potential dangers. Connor was very fortunate to escape with relatively minor, albeit painful, recoverable injuries. I used to tell my sons "If you have to say sorry then it's too late. THINK before you do something stupid!" Chris might want to reflect on that caution.
Vor 2 Tagemike hawk +12
I’ve always wished i could experience a real traditional Japanese festival, it seems like it’d be a blast
Vor 3 TageChris Woolhead +1
Check out Connor's IRL stream he did there with Chris. Loads more of the festival.
Vor 2 TageRadio Behemoth +28
NGL, I feel like you could do a whole series wherein you just to go the rural, out-of-sight areas of Japan like this one and just interview the elderly. I might be cherry-picking here but they are all so fascinating to listen to. Kind, accommodating and all so eager to give you a personalised account on the local history. Just sit, have some tea with them and listen to a kindly old man talk your ear off about how the olden days were. Anyway, certainly going to write this down as a to-go place when I plan my Japan Visit. I prefer scenic vistas over the hustle of the city anyway.
Vor 3 TageKineticStorm +16
I’m not even all the way through the video yet but honestly Chris, this is some of the most entertaining and engaging content I’ve seen. Mix in amazing production, editing and a sponsored segment that integrates seamlessly and I’ve gotta say, absolute standout
Vor 3 TageMomo_TheBlackSheep +18

Vor 3 TageNature's Finest

These are my favorite videos to watch. I love the interesting settings and incredible camera work. The shots of the island are genuinely incredible. You didn't spend enough time in the KiriKiri restaurant, the lady hand-carved EVERYTHING in there, including some of the furniture. Really amazing place.
Vor 4 Tageakiheavenly6 +109

When the innkeeper of the Pressed Flower was talking about Oshima's strong points, such as the nature, the fields, and the sea, she momentarily felt and sounded like a Studio Ghilbi character. It's a testament to how magical that place must be, and how some of the residents afford a relaxed nature to life
Vor 2 TageSimon Verhoeven +13

Vor 3 TageGaia +16
chris talking with the locals is just such a nice change to see on video... that reminds me of the time he interviewed multiple people after the 2011 earthquake and how it affected their life. These last few months I was thinking about what was left for chris to explore in Japan but seeing these small interviews and stories about random people in Japan give me hope that Chris can make so so much more content about this beautiful country and its people
Vor 3 TageMagnus Halten +17

Huntsman spiders are apparently great for killing roaches. Rachel and Jun get them in their house. Rachel said they only really come out at night, and she carries a flashlight if she has to get up cause the spiders are just there randomly XD They're great pest control and I guess you just learn to live with them. They'd freak me out a little, not gonna lie XD It's such a neat island! I'm a slave to convenience stores, so living there would be a challenge. Looks like a nice place though.

Wacky Weekend meets Journey Across Japan! It's always fun to see you and Connor go to different places but it's definitely something unique to see your elevated documentary style in a Wacky Weekend video! Had so much fun watching this and had a good laugh at Connor struggling through cobwebs in the forest 😂 Hope Connor's bruises heal quickly. Does Connor just bruise easily though or is it easy to bruise when jumping from that height? Congratulations on the sponsor btw, Chris!
Vor 3 TageChris Woolhead
Guess anyone would bruise. Connor's bruises became very colourful. On stream, he sometimes mentions his mild haemophilla. He seems fearless, though no contact sports for monke I guess.
Vor 2 TageEmpress Ryuumi +1
@Chris Woolhead Was it hemophilia that he has? I couldn't remember the exact name but now that I googled it, it seems like people who have hemophilia do bruise easily. He is quite fearless and adventurous, I agree! Although, I don't know about other contact sports but, the 1v1v1v1 and 2v2s he did with airsofts probably counts, right? 😅

Vor 4 TageBrotherHood
Not sure Australia qualifies as a remote island.
Vor 3 TageSyd +13
@BrotherHood tf are you talking about?
Vor 3 TageBrotherHood
@Syd well, a remote island is an island separated from civilization. Australia doesn't really qualify in my opinion, for that as the only locations in Australia where people live can't be classified as remote, because those are civilized areas.
Vor 3 TageSyd +12
@BrotherHood why are you bringing up Australia?
Vor 3 TageBrotherHood +5
@Syd Because from my understanding Kiri is from Australia. Edit: I understand my mistake now, I confused Kiri with the dude that teaches on that remote island xD

Vor 3 TageKittikat4124
Thank you for sharing these communities with us. It's so sad to think how much culture is quickly dying as people leave these small towns and islands in favor of city living and that Japan doesn't seem to do much about it... I'm sure if they had a tourist board tasked with sharing these small towns and their festivals, food, activities, etc. they could move more money into the areas and convince more young people to stay/move back to their home towns as well as invite in new residents.

Cool to see you using Japanese in your vids! This one was a lot of fun, and had somewhat of a similar vibe to another place I know, whose name, funny enough, also means ‘Big Island’ (Also, legitimately never checked to see if Niijima was a real place during my (still unfinished) read of Umineko. Now I wonder what it’s actually like)

...on second thought, this place is far more secluded and provincial imho. Not in a bad way!

The most hilarious part of this is watching Connor walk through the spider infested woods without even grabbing a stick or something to wave in front of himself... Tell me you don't do nature often without saying it: (I live in Canada and am not very outdoorsy, but I still would know to grab up a stick or even better a fallen branch with some leaves still on it to use like a duster) :'D The things they do for content. I'm convinced he must have chosen to walk face first into the spiders.
