I feel so sad about the people returning to the abandoned village; I can just imagine a little old person hobbling through the woods to their ancestral childhood home to sit and reminisce a bygone era and way of life :(

Its more sad that in reality its the elderly that stayed as their children moved away. The little old person stuck in isolation in a dying village, once they passed the children came to take any valuables and left the home and possesions to rot. Thats why these homes still have so many possesions in them.

A fun fact regarding the relationship between the Easter island and Japan, the government of Chile actually offered Japanese counterpart for possible sale of the island in 1930s. Although the sale didn’t go through, if it were, it probably would’ve been a part of Tokyo metropolis!

I'm shocked that there's not more films shocked in these abandoned villages, because they are perfectly suited for roles in atmospheric horror.

I don't think the local government would want the bad press if they want to encourage people to move to the country.

The fact is, there is just SOOOOO many abandoned buildings and towns across Japan. These villages are actually really common. There are over 8 million buildings abandoned across Japan, with it only growing. Within 10 years that number will be around 22 million abandoned buildings.

I agree there are so many abandoned places in the US including all around the world it’s fairly easy to make it happen .

You want horror, try West Terre Haute, Indiana. Trouble is, it's real.

I live in Kyushu and do a lot of hiking in remote areas, so I have been down my fair share of dodgy mountain roads. However, I would never in a million years attempt a road half that bad in a non-offroad/4WD RENTAL vehicle. You guys are truly mad. Thanks for all the great content.

The abandoned village certainly had a creepy atmoshphere. At the same time knowing that people lived there and had to move makes you feel sad. The fact that this kind of thing will be more and more of a common thing is disheartening in a way. I myself live in a village of about 2800 residents -and while it is situated on a main road so most likely will not be abandoned any time soon- it is also true that most people don't want to move to a smaller settlements instead of a city, so a lot of houses had been up for sale in the last 5-10 years here.

Those mountain views are amazing, but I would be utterly terrified of whatever killer insect might be waiting in ambush in those forests! Also, I hope that the visits to Kyushu end up including a visit to Mr. 上手 (Dogen) himself. Would make for quite a nice video, I'd say.

I lived in Beppu when I was studying at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University. The jigoku are cool and the eggs and meatbuns from there were delicious beyond reason. Weirdly, most people in Beppu go to Yufuin for their onsen fun instead. Takegawara onsen also does volcanic sand baths, which were amazing

Production value is basically so good that if the world was more based this would be featured on the travel Chanel 😅. Keep it up boys love it !

ok but Chris's camera work is actually amazing. I've begun to really appreciate his cinematography (idk if that is the correct word or not but yeah)

So glad things have been mended in takachiho gorge! I went in September just after a huge typhoon hit Kyushu and so much of the infrastructure there had been destroyed, couldnt go on the boats and the walk way alongside the gorge had been obliterated.

The Kyushu scenery looks so gorgeous, it makes me want to visit ASAP. Although I can certainly see why the town was abandoned, given just how remote it is.

I always enjoyed watching your wacky weekends, but the driving section at the beginning made me realized that this is just effectively the modern Top Gear specials. Your banters with CConnerDawg really does elevate the series 😅

Isn't it a Mr. Broad posting a video within this week, exactly what he had promised 13 days ago (and I've still managed to wake up with the Journey Across Japan theme playing in my mind every other day) I'm pretty sure Chris just puts out the community posts to hype him up to complete the videos faster. I love looking at these abandoned villages. Just looking at the smashed insides, dusty and possibly tilted interior, all those doors having holes, it really sends you back to the "good old times" even when you weren't there.

These videos are so cool! I love that there are so many ghost towns in Japan to see. Make sure you keep an emergency kit with you! Pack at least 3-4 days of food, solar blankets, lights, first aid kit, radios, batteries/power storage, rain gear, heat pads etc.

Not even two weeks ago I was googling places I might live in Japan and Miyazaki piqued my interest, did a bunch of reasearch and fell in love with the area. Then BAM - WACKY WEEKEND IN MIYAZAKI. Taking it as a sign to move there.

Absolutely love the videos you make, Ive always wanted to visit for a week or so with friends and see Japan for myself. Out of curiosity, do you keep your expenditure list anywhere? I am very curious how much you spend for specific things, like the Somen, how much your Inn cost, things like that.

That mountain road was so scary! I really appreciate the drone footage, it gives such a broader perspective to these areas they visit.

Most likely, the Easter Island ones weren't rolled on wood. They were waddled down, by shifting the weight from one side to the other. That fits both the lore (that the statues walked down to their places) and the condition of various broken ones that didn't make it to their final place better.

Oh my god that narrow mountain road. There are similar roads in my country that people only use hired motorcycles to get up on. Even locals with cars dare not risk it. Also, the drone shots are insanely well done and put together. Your chemistry with Connor is one of my favorites. Looking forward to more collaborations in the future.

Absolutely cacked myself during this one. Heaps of LOL moments. We went to Takachiho a few years ago and our visit was similar. I think I say in my video that the row boats were the least romantic thing we've done, and I'm pretty sure my boat ride was as expletive laden and Chris'. 🚣🤬😂But man, it was fun. As was the Soumen noodle place. They were the best somen noodles we've had and the kids loved it. 😍🍜 I also have to mention the Miyazaki beef. 🥩We didn't go as up market as Chris and Connor, we went to the local yakiniku place (look for the restaurant with the big cow out the front 🐄), and the beef was superb and really affordable. It was every bit as good as more expensive places we went to in Kobe and Tokyo. Oh, and that gorge. I hate to say but I think I said it was gorgeous too. 😂 The abandoned village reminds me of places like Nagoro (the scarecrow village) that is so close to ending up like this one. Hopefully things like scarecrows delay the almost, sadly, inevitable. Superb work from Chris and Connor. And yeah Christ, you do have to go to Easter Island. There is nothing like it. 😍 ps If anybody is so inclined you can see how "real" tourists 🤣visit Takachiho and Aso (and Nagoro), we have a couple of videos. 😁

Soooo serendipitous -- I'm planning a solo trip to Japan for November this year and Miyazaki will be my last stop, i'm going for the falls/gorge but couldn't find any info on this place really!! So I'm super stoked you guys happen to be doing a video on this area just as I'm planning a trip here lol

Miyazaki is one of my favorite prefectures! I can't believe you guys didn't try the food they cook in the Beppu hell, the buns are really good!

You get used to narrow roads in Japan. Cars, trucks, every road vehicle is smaller on average than the rest of the world.

Now that you have seen all of Japan you should make a tourist guide video for 1-2 week trip which covers all the basics plus some hidden but reachable cities/areas you know of.

That abondoned Town is incredible, kinda sad but still awesome. I always Imagine if you clean up just a little bit and repair one of the less destroyed houses you could actually stay there for a few days living a hermits life. Also how could you visit beppu but not visit Connors family ? there is a big monkey park about 2 hours walking distance from beppu city center.

I think the most interesting abandoned place in Japan (For me atleast) is rabbit island. Seeing the massive empty warehouses and facilitys are eerie, and especially haunting when you consider the place your standing in was a toxic gas facility, which was literaly responsible for thousands of deaths, all surrounded by rabbits. Weird stuff (that area would also make a good wacky weekend)

That mountain town looks like it came straight out of a Ghibly movie. 😳😍 It must be gorgeous to live in nature like that back in the day. Lounging on that porch in the chair, sunbathing without a care in the world. Too bad people choose the fast life over a peaceful life in the mountains.

I once had that noodles in a bamboo drainage once in a (kind of) Japanese town in Bangkok. It was fun. But after we passed through Covid era, I don't think everyone putting their chopsticks directly from their mouth into the drainage is an acceptable practice anymore. 😅

Love the fact that both of you were laughing in the face of certain death if the car falls of that ravine. So many of those towns will be forgotten and will be returned to nature. And did Connor just say “like a magic”? (12:45) Sweet!

I love the abandoned places of Japan, I've mapped out at least 4-5 thousand already, all confirmed by the Japanese government. They are some of the most amazing places I've seen. So many hotels, villages, resorts, Ski-Slopes, and much more just left behind for so many years.

What do you mean you've mapped out 5,000? That sounds like a crazy amount of time and such an undertaking, however you mean it.

@@nathanl8998 I've been mapping abandoned places for almost 10 years now and try to keep up with them over time so I can see the progress of the people or destructive progress of nature. I currently help out a Japanese website as well and they give me an income monthly, so that's nice for virtually no work, then someone will go on the ground and confirm it in person since I don't live in Japan anymore. Big website in JP, unknown everywhere else. I do it for fun though, I've taken literally millions of photos of abandoned places over the years.

I actually lived in Beppu for almost 5 years. I was there getting my degree at Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University, an international university there, and the onsen were the best way to de-stress after finals. I miss Beppu quite a lot, but I need to be in Tokyo for work.
