I think nostalgia is not a negative, but rather a big part of why pokemon is so special. The time it came out, the craze, the age you were when you first experienced pokemon. It all added up to a franchise that will never be forgotten by diehard fans.

Yeah I understand why he clarified by saying nostalgia will effect his decisions but I think if someone were to say they are ignoring nostalgia then I would doubt them to begin with. Isn't the whole point of ranking your favourite is by using your bias opinion? But yeah nostalgia lets you ignore a lot of problems that you aren't necessarily letting other games off for.

Black 2 was my favorite as well! I care a lot more about plot than a lot of pokefans, and bw and bw2 I think did a fantastic job, especially the sequels in showing the consequences of team plasmas actions in the first. I also loved the conveniences they added. Grinding didn't seem so bad when I could just battle a breeder over and over and also earn money, and the y button was so convenient. Little things like that made it so much better. I also love the pokemon in them and the music is fantastic.

Playing Emerald, Platinum, and Black/White 2 on release was really something else. Even as a kid growing up, you could tell those 3 games were something special. The fact that gens 3, 4, and 5 had back to back bangers makes looking at the current state of Pokemon legitimately pretty sad. I hope we get to see a game like at least one of those three again.

@Jose Enrico Coronel I mean mid means middle of the road man and judging how you only named a few titles under it, it makes sense to be mid. But the main reason i say it’s mid is cus aside from the delta episode the game wasn’t anything crazy. Post game was a little weak, the main game was way too easy even under nuzlockes with hard rule sets, Steven got replaced with a way worse champion, and the originals look better and have more to offer. To me a whole remakes purpose is to either be just as good as the old game with new graphics, or to offer a far different take on the old game while still keeping its charm. I don’t think ORAS did either
Vor Tag
Jose Enrico Coronel
@Bruis 15 I wonder why you think it's mid when it's better than XY, Moon Sun, and BDSP. If we have gotten the same Battle frontier in Emerald, it would be on top of the list.

@SweetSweetAliB They would've been stellar games if they had included just that small but big detail. Hell I'm sure that the games would've still been played a lot today even. There is no reason at all not to include a bf, it's really a waste not to. So I can't help but to see what could have been. While I type this, I have kind of realized why they didn't include this incredibly well received feature. The entire reason is because people would still play it today, which would make future games obsolete. Or you would be forced to include it in every following game, which is a hassle I guess? It's despicable yet somehow still a little understandable.

The Hoenn remakes are only liked by people who never actually played Emerald. The amount of fun one can have in emeralds or even platinums battle zone is unreached to this day and it boggles my mind that they haven't remade it, especially in the remakes of said generations.

There's a few facts that boosts both Black and White and Black 2 and White 2 imo is that being that there's a lot of interesting detail within the stories of these games. One of my personal favorite things in the entirety of Black and White is that N, no matter what text speed you have the game set to, always talks at the fastest possible text speed. It makes him feel like he knows what he believes in and knows what he wants to say before he even says it, and it makes his idealism feel more real, fleshing him out as a character a bit more without really doing much.
Vor 4 Monate
RPG Fanatic
@Kaz Kat Gamer My favorite part about black and white is how gullible N is to believe and how moronic Ghetsis is to believe that crappy speeches and being a regional champion will suddenly make people stop being with Pokemon when the entire world is unhealthily addicted to and reliant on them.
Vor Monat

my favorite aspect of B/W is that N's team is always pokemon you could catch around that area to further cement his goals and practice. On top of that Ghetis (how ever you spell his name) team is designed to be in total opposition to N's since he was just using N anyways. He had a counter for all N's pokemon.

My friends and I have always likened a Blissey being KO'd to a chicken with its head cut off. The fact that bw2 is advertised as being a different game is false advertisement. Just giving your game a different shittier plot with the same villain and giving us mostly the same shitty characters and adding a few locations and rerouting your journey isn't being a sequel, your mechanics have to change as well, that's the point. Either your mechanics change or the entire world does and neither happened. Either way, USUM was advertised as a definitive edition, it didn't have a 2 in the title but funnily enough it was more a sequel than BW2 was, it offered more gameplay modes and even entirely new Pokemon. USUM also has objectively more shit to do, check the post game checklist of USUM and compare it to BW2, BW2 is a joke in comparison.

My favorite games were pretty low on your list, but hey, that's the nature of subjective opinion. And some of those (Ultra Sun/Ultra Moon) really grew on me, because although I didn't really like gen 7 at first, the nostalgia has kicked in enough that I'm enjoying playing through them again. Looking forward to digging back into X/Y afterward, because I really enjoyed them the first time (and not so much the second time, but it's been a while). Meanwhile, Black/White wasn't my favorite, but it did one thing really well that I haven't experienced in the rest of the series - I genuinely despised the villains and wanted to beat them for story reasons, rather than simply wanting to beat them because they were in my way. Plus, the battle music when fighting them is among my favorite in the series.

Seeing you saying Black 2 and White 2 being the best makes me so unbelievably happy. The games are AMAZING - I love the story, I love the new areas, I love the characters, the obtainable Pokémon, fun little features that got added and so on. Those games are my absolute favorites. I can actually 1:1 agree with S+ to everything including A-Tier on your list. Besides that, there are some things I do not agree with too much on the lower tiers, but this is such a wonderful list, tackling each game's strengths and weaknesses. Amazing vid, Wolfey :)

Amazing video just because it appeases to your one shitty favorite that was put in 1st place just to appease the loud majority? what a garbage assessment. This entire list is trash, the entire list is all over the place. Sword and shield is above ORAS and HGSS? FRLG is bottom tier remake next to LPE and it's above most of the games on this list. Saying fucking ORAS is worse than emerald just because of the battle frontier when ORAS excels in literally everything else in features? Speaking of features what does BW2 have that most of this list doesn't? A shitty movie mini game? An easy mode battle pyramid? A complete fan service battle tower with no unique gameplay features? As far as features go, I'll take worm hole ride, mantine surf, and battle agency over any of that crap.

I think it's exactly because Emerald, Platinum, and B2W2 when I was 7, 11, and 15 respectively has a lot to do with why the recent generations are so disappointing. A lot of people who grew up with these games like me got to grow up with really fantastic games, and we were unfortunately spoiled for it. If we could play and love these games as children, then why did the formula change to make the newer games so hand-holdy? are this generation's children really so inept, or have they just decided to stop giving them a chance? You don't have to be an adult to appreciate complexity and good content in games. It's like the quote of why there's no ORAS Battle Frontier said, they thought kids wouldn't play the game long enough for it to matter. Such a depressing direction for game design, when we just assume our games aren't good enough to keep people hooked so there's no need to add content. But not having content in enhanced/remake games like USUM,ORAS,BDSP, feels like there's just no heart and soul in the games anymore. They didn't make this from scratch, the game was already there that should cut down so much on the work you need to do, and leave room for more content and love put in. But alas, we get what we get.

Gen V B/W2 is my favourite! They have Join Avenue where you can invite visitors to open shops which makes EV training/resetting much easier, though it takes quite some time to level up them to make them useful. TM don't break which is a god damn good feature that allow me to try so many different builds! The endgame has so much content like battle subway, PWT, B/W towers and battle institute. Unfortunately we still have to keep track of EV training progress in an old school way like on a excel doc or notebook. IV check still needs help from online calculator. These problems keep it from being perfect but still it's a nitpicking. My only wish now is making Hidden Ability more accessible for All Pokemon available in the game not limit the feature to hidden grottoes after they shut down dream world (Yeah I grind weeks to get a multiscale Dragonite even with the help of Pass Power...)

I guess it depends... if u played gold/silver before HGSS it might lessen the fun because it's still just a remake. The opposite for ORAS, people played Ruby/Sapphire first and most of them prefer the originals but if u played ORAS first... U might feel the remakes are much better.

@Adam Morin I also just find HGSS story pretty bland and boring to be honest. I just fail to see how they get rated so high with some people. Team Rocket never really feels like a threat in it and just gets defeated way too easily/soon. Although I was also kinda done with them at that point just because of how uninteresting they were. @Average Lisp Enjoyer I played hgss when i was younger and then recently 2 times to see if they hold up. I don’t like the mechanics I’m sorry to say the gym leaders are bland and johto/kanto is still small and linear. Kanto isn’t anything special only a boss gauntlet just to fight red at the end. Not even to get gen 1 pokemon because you can catch gen 1 pokemon in johto. The new type chart is by far the best we have had in any gen except fairy being op but it still feels balanced. There was lack of story which i did like. I personally think they were good games but not as good as people think they were. Only reederming quality it has is the arceus unknown event. I’m not saying im ranking anything above or below gen 8 but i rank hgss below gen 8.. i do miss the battle frontier though

X was my first Pokémon game, so it will always hold a very special place in my heart. If I didn’t get that game for Christmas one year, who knows if I’d ever have become interested in RPGs in the first place. Sword and Shield are probably the games I’ve replayed the most (3 completed playthroughs plus some ongoing gimmicky ones) and, hot take, I honestly really like Hop as a character. After losing to Bede, he starts to doubt his purpose and skills and that’s honestly super relatable. …Okay, that sounds sad, but I’m fine.😅 Anyways, those are probably the Pokémon games I’ve enjoyed the most and that are the most memorable to me personally. Oh! Also Legends Arceus even tho I’m hopelessly bad at the controls. 😅 I can’t wait for Scarlet and Violet. Who knows! Maybe they’ll end up topping my list. :)

another thing you didn't mention about B2W2 is the key system. it's a bit weird to use but it allows you to change black city and white forrest, change what regi you get, and most importantly adds in more difficulty options. the key system also allows you to link to a BW game and gives you cool things like your entire dress up case from that save file, new dialogue, and N's pokemon.

Up until last week, ultra moon / sun were the only main series game I never finished, but since it had been a few years, I tried them again, and man, I had a blast. The rainbow rocket episode was especially fun for me. My opinion of black and white also changed drastically as a replayed them after a few years. I didn't like the games when they first came out, but replayed them almost ten years later definitely was a new experience and totally changed my mind on them. But man, do I agree that BDSP was a complete miss. I hope one day we get a proper remake of a lot of people's favorite generation, me included, cause boy oh boy was that not it.

I'm very glad to see the Unova region games placed so high. It was a start for Pokémon to start to breeze past its time, and have its flower bloom. It was a step into what could possibly be described as "it's released a long time ago, but it's like it was created 10 years later from now." Finding a shiny Cobalion infected with Pokérus was genuinely a blessing, it felt like a one in a million. After that, my luck plummeted until I eventually was able to get my hands on a shiny Zangoose. Yeah I understand why he clarified by saying nostalgia will effect his decisions but I think if someone were to say they are ignoring nostalgia then I would doubt them to begin with. Black 2 was my favorite as well!
Vor TagJose Enrico Coronel
@Bruis 15 I wonder why you think it's mid when it's better than XY, Moon Sun, and BDSP. If we have gotten the same Battle frontier in Emerald, it would be on top of the list.
Vor TagDrewX86
@SweetSweetAliB They would've been stellar games if they had included just that small but big detail. Hell I'm sure that the games would've still been played a lot today even. There is no reason at all not to include a bf, it's really a waste not to. So I can't help but to see what could have been. While I type this, I have kind of realized why they didn't include this incredibly well received feature. The entire reason is because people would still play it today, which would make future games obsolete. Or you would be forced to include it in every following game, which is a hassle I guess? It's despicable yet somehow still a little understandable.
Vor TagSweetSweetAliB
@DrewX86 I played emerald as a kid and did the battle frontier a decent amount and I thought oras was quite swell

The Hoenn remakes are only liked by people who never actually played Emerald. The amount of fun one can have in emeralds or even platinums battle zone is unreached to this day and it boggles my mind that they haven't remade it, especially in the remakes of said generations.
Vor TagRainbowTurtle
There's a few facts that boosts both Black and White and Black 2 and White 2 imo is that being that there's a lot of interesting detail within the stories of these games. One of my personal favorite things in the entirety of Black and White is that N, no matter what text speed you have the game set to, always talks at the fastest possible text speed. It makes him feel like he knows what he believes in and knows what he wants to say before he even says it, and it makes his idealism feel more real, fleshing him out as a character a bit more without really doing much.
Vor 4 MonateRPG Fanatic
@Kaz Kat Gamer My favorite part about black and white is how gullible N is to believe and how moronic Ghetsis is to believe that crappy speeches and being a regional champion will suddenly make people stop being with Pokemon when the entire world is unhealthily addicted to and reliant on them.
Vor MonatKaz Kat Gamer
my favorite aspect of B/W is that N's team is always pokemon you could catch around that area to further cement his goals and practice. On top of that Ghetis (how ever you spell his name) team is designed to be in total opposition to N's since he was just using N anyways. He had a counter for all N's pokemon.

@Phat Phungus Yeah they stopped the developpement of pokemon Z (apparently they were going to make a ZX and ZY version, we got that from SM's source code), and rushed SM's development to release it on the 20th anniversary (SM started development in 2014 and was released two years latter apparently).

Yeah they really should get a sequel like black and white 😭 I would love a game with an open world but more like exploring cities, towns, and other urban areas like assassins creed ya know. I love the wild areas n all but they are not doing as well graphically as the cities and towns are. Plus it would be a cool change in environment

I personally really like sun and moon but I can see why others don't. The cutscenes can be really overwhelming at times and z moves aren't the greatest gimmick. The thing that really makes me like the games is the Alola region itself. I really just love the whole Island aesthetic and the music is also outstanding. I do have to admit a lot of this may be nostalgia talking because sun and moon were the second ever pokemon games I played and the first ones I beat.

Heart Gold and Soul Silver is my #1. I think it has the perfect execution on almost everything. I remember being so sad that I beat the pokemon leauge in Johto only to find out that I got to play in a whole other region in kanto with the same team.

I have been an X & Y defender for so long. People really underrate how important they were in moving along the speed and ease of raising a competitive team. Also, a great in-game online ladder system. Considering Sword & Shield made such an effort toward making competitive pokemon accessible, I feel like I've seen more people begin to at least point out that X & Y did this too! Also: your channel has grown so much and your videos are amazing in quality, truly--3 Michelin star Pokemon content!

X & Y are very over-hated. They're definitely one of my favourite Pokémon games. The only critique I really had with it at the time were the most annoying rivals, but honestly, looking back, Serena wasn't that bad (definitely better then Hau and Hop that's for sure). Plus, they brought my favourite mechanic in mega evolutions. The game I actually didn't enjoy playing was sun and moon. For me, those are bottom tier Pokémon games. I just really don't get the X and Y hate at all.

My friends and I have always likened a Blissey being KO'd to a chicken with its head cut off. You give it a half-assed limp-wristed punch, then watch it run around in a panic as its HP ever-so-slowly... painfully slowly... goes down, until it inevitably tires itself out, lays down and takes the big sleep.

Vor MonatRPG Fanatic

From the perspective of someone who plays non competitively, swsd and blwh2 were my favorites. I know Pokémon doesn’t always have the deepest stories or best narratives but these games have the most memorable characters ever. Plus the jump in graphics for swsh and blwh made it a lot more exciting personally. Even though I grew up with the start of Pokémon, I don’t have much value for that nostalgia minus the music. Gen 5 is the gen where the developers give their all and very passion about. But what they got from that are insults and hate and worst pokemon sales. That's probably why newer pokemon doesn't feel as good ever since then since what's the point of putting their all when doing bare minimum give better sales and reception

On top of that I feel that they are attempting to appeal to a broader audience by making their games easier than usual which doesn’t sit well with long time fans. I wouldn’t necessarily say they lost their passion, but I would assume it would be difficult to be passionate about a franchise that Nintendo is forcing you to milk just about every year.

Vor 3 MonateRPG Fan

Not even to get gen 1 pokemon because you can catch gen 1 pokemon in johto. The new type chart is by far the best we have had in any gen except fairy being op but it still feels balanced. There was lack of story which i did like. I personally think they were good games but not as good as people think they were. Only reederming quality it has is the arceus unknown event. another thing you didn't mention about B2W2 is the key system. it's a bit weird to use but it allows you to change black city and white forrest, change what regi you get, and most importantly adds in more difficulty options. the key system also allows you to link to a BW game and gives you cool things like your entire dress up case from that save file, new dialogue, and N's pokemon.

There’s an action replay code for increased walking speed pretty sure there one for screen change speed too but if you enable the walking speed code gen IV is easily the best for content, length, and variety

I've never played a single round of competitive pokemon. You reference the competitive scene a lot. I think that accounts for how different our rankings are

It's funny to me that you cna double your catches in let's go by adding two joycons and putting them in the joycon holder. You'll always get the fuse ball in my experience.

Emerald's Battle Frontier truly was the best set of battle facilities in all of Pokémon.

I only liked it for pyramid, the rest doesn't really hold more over what gen 4's frontier has to offer.

God I love this list, it's so charming... reminds me of a game with limited 3D.. so charming

Im gonna keep defending the Strong and Agile style. They might've been unsuccessful in their debut. But I don't actually want it gone. I want to see the mechanic improved and better implemented, because I find it mechanically interesting and thematically cool!

I love pokemon X and Y, it was a refreshing generation with amazing new pokemon and the fairy type, and incredible music, i disagree with your ranking for that. The soul of this game i can't explain.

My top three are B2W2, Platinum, and Emerald. I haven't played Legends yet, but seeing how similar your ranking is makes me even more excited to give it a try!

These sound irrelevant, but I like to think this feats wouldn't have been possible without the release of gen 5 so long ago.

Gen 6 was my first pokemon games, and I love them very much, that being said, they weren't very good. A sort of "Don't talk trash about my garbage" sort of connection.

I really enjoyed watching this! I grew up playing Red, FireRed and Sapphire and I stopped playing after Diamond, until Sword and Shield came out. To me, BDSP weren't that bad because of that, neither were Sword/Shield because it was such an upgrade for me. I looove Kanto, Johto and Hoenn because of my nostalgia haha. I watched this hoping to add another pokemon game to my to-play-list, and I was able to add Black2/White2 and Emerald. Thanks!
