NOTIFICATION SQUAD: Where did Natsuki's pirate pants go?! Genuinely, it was utterly bizarre. But still not as insane as his cover of Bon Jovi in the bath tub. 🍿🍿🍿Just to point out, I don't want to make it seem like I'm trivialising a fear of flying. I do have one that's been steadily worsening over the years, though when you live in Japan, you don't have much choice to get over it when flying home. In a strange way, the Cessna did actually help, as one of the key fears is the turbulence and honestly, I've never endured such a turbulent flight. But I hope you enjoyed the first action packed episode of Journey Across Japan: The Lost Islands! The series continues next week! 🍿🍿🍿

Now I know Chris' videos have a high quality BBC documentary, travel show vibes to it but I don't think anyone would approve someone as unpredictable and weird as Natsuki for TV. That's why these videos stand out from rest of the standard shows and I can't emphasise how much of a gem Natsuki is to Abroad in Japan.
Vor 2 years@lycheens +135
Natsuki is a rare combination of chaotic and wholesome energy.
Vor year@benscomments1432 +268
Somebody's probably mentioned it already, but Natsuki's imitating a talkbox, a device that lets you modulate sound waves with the shape of your mouth by putting a plastic tube inside it. The tube runs to a device connected to your keyboard/guitar and an amplifier, and the result is that your instrument sounds like it's talking. The tube he's holding looks exactly like a talkbox tube -- same size, probably same material, just opaque instead of clear. It's used for the voice-like guitar riff in Livin on a Prayer, hence Bon Jovi.
Vor 2 years@kricku +1
Different word for vocoder?
Vor year@benscomments1432 +13
@@kricku good question! They’re actually totally different. A vocoder is entirely electronic — it takes one input from your instrument and another input from your voice (via a microphone) and returns output that makes your voice sound like that instrument. A talkbox has a mechanical component — your mouth. It uses the physical shape of the inside of your mouth to make the instrument sound like your voice.
Vor year@kricku +4
@@benscomments1432 now I get it. That's super interesting. So does the talk box blow like, guitar noise into your mouth and you sing with that, or do you just sing through the tube into an amp and the magic happens there? I did watch some videos but it wasn't clear. Edit: that's quite the response time on a basically necro'd comment, btw 😛 Edit edit: that's a redundant question now that I think about it.

"BON JOVI STYLE" "I don't know what he's on about" I know exactly what's he's on about. Natsuki is referring to a talkbox, an electronic sound effects pedal that can be used with electric guitars and also electric keyboards. It uses a rubber tube (similar to the water hose he's holding) to combine mouthed words/noises with the sound of the instrument. This effect was used in Bon Jovi songs such as "Living On A Prayer" and "It's My Life".

I'd say fear of turbulence is just kind of a lack of knowledge how planes operate, what they can withstand and how normal turbulence is.. I've had severe turbulence a few times, it was fun. The way I started learning about planes and how they are constructed and handle was when as a joke i started watching plane crash videos before my flights lol, after a while, you start to learn what to really worry about and what is completely normal

Chris, few people you meet can truly relate to your experience with the cold air turbulence, but I can. And your bumpy Cessna flight. When you were about 5 and I was about 15, I flew from Sydney to LA and hit two of those nasty air pockets in a row during a storm. I know exactly what you went through, mate, and I too thought it was all over and haven't quite been the same since whenever I have to fly, which was often pre-covid. Probably more impactful because it was my first long haul flight and relatively young to be flying alone. And seated on the wing so I could see it flexing wildly during the storm. Front of the plane suddenly where your feet were, your stomach in another dimension, and literally falling out of the sky helpless. A baby a few seats over got launched over the next row. Images like that never fade. A few weeks later I reluctantly took a "joy flight" over the Grand Canyon in a Cessna. The turbulence from the updrafts of the canyon below as you pass over each tabletop would basically pick the plane up and dump it like it was hitting tarmac. I felt your hesitation, so extra kudos to you and crew for another great vid, but this one in particular.

Nobody: Abroad in Japan: I'm going to make my production quality higher than most tv shows. In all seriousness though, I love your videos with high production values. They invoke such an adventurous feeling that makes me want to go to Japan more than anything else. I really appreciate it, keep up the good work!

I love journey across of Japan. I hope this series continues. Even if it is once every two years.

I just rewatched the original series now with my boyfriend (he is already a fan) and I must say, amazing job on this, too. The production is fantastic, such a difference to the "mainstream " Youtube vlogs and channels. Great job and please never stop!

Natsuki’s Bon Jovi moment got me giggling hard 🤣 Whenever I get the chance to visit Japan…It would be awesome to have you 3 as tour guides. Never a dull moment😀

This channel strikes the perfect balance between being informative, respectful towards Japan and laugh out loud funny. Keep up the stellar work guys.

Flying over that volcano looked amazing. I'll have to try to do that in the future. I did stunts in a bi-plane in Australia before, so I think I'll be fine, but I'll definitely be taking Dramamine beforehand lol

Is anyone else gonna mention Chris' amazing cinematography when Natsuki was shutting down the shop??? Those camera angles were golden

Late to the party here but just wanted to say, I love your vids! I often run them while working on basses. This is an insanely good, documentary quality production. Love the humour as well! Anyway, cheers from a Scot living in Japan.

The honest fear on Chris's face in the plane is amazing, well done for getting on that plane!

I'm probably first to comment on this but just in case: editing skills and production are on top level. Not just the concept but work behind it. Much respect.

The part with Natsuki's salon was amazingly cinematic. The losing of the pants and the Bon Jovi bath had me genuinely laughing, Natsuki's such a character. Love him.

That’s it, I’m terrified of flying but I need to visit Japan. Great videos Edit: I hadn’t even got to the part where you say your scared of flying when I wrote. Same, woke up one day in my 20s and now I have a phobia 😳 Super brave to get in to that !! Awesome

Not quite a glider but a lightly loaded C172 has a great glide ratio and you have some time to pick a spot to land if the engine quits. Although for professional flights i thought they would use something a little more powerful like a 210 which can seat more passengers and has a beefy engine. Bouncing around in turbulence is all part of the experience and you get used to it as a pilot pretty quick.

It's like watching a BBC Documentary, a Comedy Show and an Adventure Vlog all at the same time!. Absolutely love the amount of effort you guys put into this. A treat for the senses. The opening Natsuki scene was like viewing a friggen movie. Top notch!.

Im scared of flying but even i would feel safe and comfortable if i knew my pilot had 20k hours of flying experience. That it insane, more than 2 YEARS of total time in the cockpit. If there is someone i would want in the drivers seat during an disaster it would be someone with that kind of experience.

Absolute level-up this series. Feels like a culmination of everything Chris has learned doing travel series. Extra love for Ian's legendary camera management skills in the Cessna. EDIT: Or Norm's, as it turns out!

We were lucky enough to go to Yakushima on our trip to Japan in 2017. :) It was the scariest place to try to get to without speaking English (compared to just taking the train). We took the ferry from Kagoshima port - there weren't too many folks around that spoke English or English signs, so it was tricky to find the Ferry. If you took the flight, maybe there would be more English-speaking staff if you need more help. Getting around Yakushima is also tricky. The bus comes to the stops only every hour or less, so it can be a long wait. It's worth having a sight-seeing guide if you don't/can't drive a car. We booked a sight-seeing trip with Yakushima Experience. They were great! Our guide was from New Zealand I believe. You can customize your tour depending on what you like - hiking, sightseeing, shops, beaches. They took us to that waterfall in the video :) We also hiked the Taikoiwa rock trail which was easy enough to get to by bus (no need for a guide). I think either our accommodations or Yakushima Experience helped us in confirming how to get there. We stayed at Shiki no yado-Onaida and were able to get there by bus. We had our own cabin which had an outside bath (and inside) - but we went in the Fall and didn't get a chance to use it since it was dark early - and there can be huge bugs like praying mantis and others. The food was great, the people were amazing (and they had laundry for long-term travelers). Loved our time at Yakushima! Hope those travel tips help someone :)
