While Apollo placed the first steps on the Moon, Artemis opens the door for humanity to sustainably work and live on another world for the first time. Using the lunar surface as a proving ground for living on Mars, this next chapter in exploration will forever establish our presence in the stars. ✨
We are returning to the Moon - to stay - and this is how we are going!
Actress Kelly Marie Tran of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” lent her voice to this project.

This plan sucks. Throw away the entire rocket for one trip ? This isn't the 60s anymore. Who on earth designed this ? They should just pay Elon Musk whatever he wants and scrap the whole thing. Too complicated and too many things to go wrong.

Nasa needs to merge or shut down, the abundant supply of money allows the SLS system to be expendable, with SpaceX and other commercial operators showing reusability can be done . The public will support and encourage savings and technology in people like Musk and Bezos use put the planets ecosystem first.

Seems to be an exercise in leaving stuff behind. It’s like looking back in time to the 70s where you just dump it when your done. Surely Elon and his reusable ships has to be the real way forward, I’d hate to be the one cleaning up all those dead landers in 100 years.

Isn’t that far more expensive than Apollo missions? First: you need to deploy expensive space station on orbit of The Moon, which serves as a just parking lot for spaceship. At least make two launches per mission: new lander module for every new landing, then launch Orion.

Its just dumb to use sooo large rockets only for a so littel thing wich will go back to earth. I m normaly not a fan of everything Elon Musk and SpaceX dose but in the case of to reuse rockets i m totally in. The way Nasa dose it since decades is just a waste of money Pls Nasa find a way to reduce space pollution, cause that will become a huge problem for my Generation to clean that thrash out of Orbit. Artemis name should be 'Apollo 18'
Vor 4 TageEimajOzear
Apollo 18 to 20 were going to happen until budget cuts. SLS and Artemis are completely a different rocket and architecture respectively, which will use separately launched lunar landers (most likely on commercial rockets such as Blue Origin's New Glenn and ULA's Vulcan). I recommend you read into the last days of the Apollo program! There are so many interesting proposals including the Apollo Applications Project, where the Saturn V would have been used as a launch vehicle which would eventually send humans to Mars when coupled with a nuclear upper stage.

All of the individual components of SLS are proven in space. Starship is yet to reach sub-orbital space, never mind orbit. As a consequence of being bigger too, Starship requires refuelling flights to reach anywhere beyond Earth orbit; once prepped on the pad, SLS can send humans to the Moon all in one go just like the Apollo missions. A seperate launch will be required to send the lunar landers to lunar orbit, however.
Vor 3 TageAirwhisper80
Why help build it when it wont be ready for years when SLS already exists.

Vor 6 TagePOWERFUL STRONG
@EimajOzear It's a shame NASA cancel the Venture Star SSTO Space plane and aerospike engine program in 2001!
Vor 3 TagePOWERFUL STRONG
@EimajOzear Apollo missions all have many risks. It is very possible to lose crew in Apollo missions. Thanks to the good organization management of the Apollo program and redundancy design and many ground testof the rockets and spacecrafts, and heavy training of ground controllers and Apollo astronauts, no crew were lost in an Apollo lunar mission.
Vor 3 TagePOWERFUL STRONG
@EimajOzear NASA has became too conservative too closed-minded to accept new concept and new method of space flight since the 2003 Columbia accident!
Vor 3 TagePOWERFUL STRONG
@EimajOzear The Orion capsules and SLS are the pork barrel projects of the Congressional members who only want to protect the space related jobs of their home Congressional districts.
Vor 3 TagePOWERFUL STRONG
@EimajOzear It's such a shame to use Orion capsules and SLS to go beyond low earth orbit!
Vor 3 TageD.M.R Leenen
There will be so much waste that collects in space and on the moon itself, isn't that bad?
Vor 6 TageD.M.R Leenen
@EimajOzear you're right indeed, I forgot that it just burns up when re-entering thank you for your comment!
Vor 3 TageEimajOzear
If you're talking about the pieces of the rocket itself, not really: 1) The two white boosters will fall back to Earth 2) The central orange tank will burn up in the atmosphere (it does not reach orbital velocity) 3) The upper stage may enter an orbit around the sun or impact with the Moon (both options were used during the Apollo program) 4) At the end of the mission, the Orion service module will detach from the crew capsule before re-entering Earth's atmosphere, burning up while the crew capsule safely re-enters. When I visualise waste, I think of the millions of tons that accumulate over the course of a day here on Earth; from one of these missions (which will take place at most twice a year), less than 100 tons will be left over in orbit and on the surface of the Moon combined. Of course, we will want to move away from this kind of mission design as we improve propulsion technologies, but right now, getting humans to the Moon takes precedence over 50-100t of waste produced per year. Hope this helps!

Vor 5 TageCorey doyle
Can't they just use SpaceX starship instead be a lot cheaper When it's ready
Vor 6 TageEimajOzear
**If** Starship ever reaches orbit and is certified for orbital and lunar missions, I'm sure they will as they have selected it as one of the human landing system contracts for landing on the Moon. However, the SLS is the only current rocket design which can take humans to Earth orbit and send them to the lunar gateway all in one launch and each part of it has flown in space in one form or another. The less launches, the less complications, the smallest chance of failure; this is critical when you have crew onboard. So I say stay cautiously optimistic about Starship and SpaceX as they have brought a lot of previously studied and proven technologies into the mainstream, but anything could happen in the next few years or decades.
Vor 3 TageCameo Six
It's a Nice idea that NASA can use. But it's a colony ship more than a research platform. NASA wants to do more of research and experiments before they begin. They just want to be prepared
Vor 6 TageOhThatEdit

Vor 6 TageAGuyWhoBreaksTheRuleOfUniverse
Wait...why are you soo late😂
Vor 3 TageI'm socially Awkward
I'm all for this but it would be a lot cheaper and efficient if the Core Stage didn't burn up in the atmosphere and was able to fall back down to the Atlantic Ocean where it can be recovered and used again in a future mission.
Vor 7 TageEimajOzear
The Space Shuttle program was sadly more expensive to maintain than using expendable rockets. While recovery/re-use makes a lot of sense from a materials and manufacturing perspective, the refurbishment of engines and the amount of labour ($$$) which is needed to safely re-certify human-rated systems for re-use can be counter productive. Re-use in the way that SpaceX does it (propulsive landing) also eats away at performance as fuel is reserved for landing; by being expendable, all of the fuel is used to reach orbit.
Vor 3 TageBobatomman4 1
recovery systems would be to complicated and heavy
