Nothing in the Universe is static. In the milky way, billions of stars orbit the galactic center.
Some, like our sun, are pretty consistent, keeping a distance of around 30,000 light years from the galactic center, completing an orbit every 230 million years.

This dance is not an orderly ballet - more like a skating rink filled with drunk toddlers. This chaos makes the galaxy dangerous. Our solar neighbourhood is constantly changing, with stars moving hundreds of kilometers every second.

Only the vast distances between objects protect us from the dangers out there. But we might get unlucky in the future. At some point we could encounter a star going supernova. Or a massive object passing by and showering earth with asteroids.

If something like this were to happen we would likely know thousands, if not millions of years in advance. But we still couldn’t do much about it.

Unless… we move our whole solar system out of the way.

Moving a galaxy is not as easy as a solar system. While they look similar, a solar system has 99% or more of its mass in it's center. The star. Or stars for multi star systems. The supermassove black holes we assume to be in the center of galaxies only make up 0.05% - 1% of a galaxies mass though. Therefore we cant move a galaxy by moving one point of it. Galaxies are held together by the gravity of the collective. The supermassive black hole more a natural occurance of that collective then the core of the system. Solarsystems are held together by the gravity of the star. The star is very much the core and center of the system. And on a galactical scale, the planets it has effectivly dont matter.

imagine a civilization building a stellar engine and using it to colonize other solar systems, and whenever they pass by other solar systems they build a dyson sphere to power a new stellar engine in the new solar system so that all the star systems they colonize can travel through the galaxy together to keep all their colonies within at least slightly more manageable travel distances

I just watched this video and the ones about Dyson Spheres and Skyhooks. They’re amazing and revolutionary! The biggest problem I see is that these things concern the future beyond our lifetimes and people don’t care about futures that aren’t theirs. I think that if we were (functionally) immortal we’d turn our attention towards these things because they would then be our own futures.

The funny thing is I first read about this idea in a 1937 science fiction novel called "Star Maker" by Olaf Stapledon. An amazing work of prediction. The Milky Way civilisation made contact with Andromeda by sending populated worlds across intergalactic space. And that wasn't even a major thing in the story. He even had virtual reality and the multiverse, as well as things like artificial worlds, Dyson spheres and so on.

(2) Cybersouls: In the case you dont want to die, you can download your mind into a computer. (3) Impervious Flesh: in which our bodies are brought to the point where they no longer decay and we can actually live longer, millions of years longer. (4) Temporal Mirrors, a technology in which we cross into a the solar system's far millenial future. Thanks for your vids. As you can see you got me thinking.

Since you said that when we move and use the sun as fuel, the sun would live longer, couldn’t we just keep moving throughout the universe so then the sun lives for longer? But if we use it too much, would it lose its amount of gravity and drop all the planets into the universe to drift apart and crash into other solar systems?

This same technology could allow us to mine the sun - instead of a beam generating thrust, you push out a beam of ionized particles that get collected into a massive particle accelerator - one able to fuse any element we'd ever need. I've seen some folks call the technology "star lifting" and it would basically end the concept of scarcity for our species.

gamer dude wake up. We’re further ahead technology wise than you probably realize and those “problems” will never go away regardless of what we do so stop. Global warming is natural for one and we just accelerated it. You act like these “problems” will cause humanity to go extinct in the next 100 years. Not going to happen. Even at this rate the earth will be habitable until the earth goes red giant. If we can theorize as much as we do I’m sure we already have the technology and resources to do most space exploration. I think it’s the nations who don’t want to collaborate with each other and work with one another. We’re too greedy as a civilization to even collaborate with each other for the sake of humanity. It’s pointless to even ponder the possibilities. If every nation on earth put their resources together and we’re collaborative we probably would be actually doing a lot of what we theorize instead of talking about it like we can’t do it when we clearly can.

Since G-type stars like the Sun never actually use up all their fuel- they end up puffing *most* of it off during the Red Giant phase- the beam of energy shooting into the sun would stir the stellar mantle, ensuring the star burns its fuel supply more efficiently, thus extending the lifespan of the sun that way too.

How does the Sun gets kinetic energy from photons? I mean if they give energy then will the wavelength of the photon reduce or what will happen to the photons? I mean the light energy must reduce or deteriote. Isn't it? Will it disappear as if hitting a black source or just increase its wavelength and become radio, micro or infrared wave?

so the solar system becomes the space ship, interesting. however even though the planets are bound to the sun, it could throw then out of balance. it might even throw them back behind the exaust, and even have them smash into each other at a single point. or loose momentum when we stop the engine so they fall into the sun or end up with the orbit of murcury, aka very close.

this makes a lot more sense than say... flying 3 light years to a neighbouring star. Instead, bring the whole solar system to be much closer to a neighbour, then send satellites to collect detailed data on different planets for viability, and then send humans if really promising.

I love these videos and the ideas presented in them, but I seriously doubt that humanity is going to be around for that long or become that technologically advanced, because we can't even seem to handle the problems we've got now. Using both cooperation with nature and our technology, we need to figure out ways to sustain ourselves, our resources, and our planet if we ever want to become this technologically advanced.

I love this video, and I have a question, please be gentle. If the engine is producing thrust out one side, and thrust out the other to balance itself from falling in to the sun, wouldn't the two forces be the same force? It needs to not hit the sun, so it needs to balance it's position which means it needs to stand still...? where is then the movement of the sun coming from?

Vor 2 Monate
Quân Trần Hồng
Quân Trần Hồng

when it is balance the thruster and the sun become 1 object, that is when the jet from the thruster become the acceleration source for our sun. It's like you tug your car by another car, between 2 cars, the force is balance but the total acceleration of the 2 is from the one that is tugging. The jet shooting back is just the rope to connect 2 seperated object

in 12019 this make sense to me but in 12022, I have questions wouldn't the shkadov thruster just fly away with it's thrust? The gravity created by the thruster is too weak to pull the sun along? what if the caplan thruster doesnt push the sun, but only give the mass back to the sun, pushing itself and crashing into the sun? And how will it stay there without getting pulled by gravity when it's turned off? also what if the nozzle created by the caplan, burns mercury, Venus and possibly earth?

i’m a bit skeptical as sonce the sun is millions of times larger than the thruster, and since it is somewhat flexible and made out of goo, won’t the thruster just push a hole in the sun, moving all the mass out of the way?

Vor 6 Monate
Quirky View

I keep coming back to this video cause it's cool, but there's something that I feel gets super glossed over. "We only need to move the sun, all the other stuff is glued to it by gravity." I know the videos super oversimplify a lot for the sake of convenience but I really want to know how that works. Like I feel if I opened up Universe Sandbox (if I owned it) and loaded our solar system in, and then added acceleration to the sun it would end up throwing the planets orbits out of wack and causing issues

Vor Monat
Bugajue98
Bugajue98

Not only that, but wouldn't our solar system passing close by other massive solar systems affect their orbits and equilibrium also? Could it be a domino effect that throws the entire gravitational orbits of the galaxy's stars out of balance? Perhaps a lot of math and careful positioning could avoid most problems, but we couldn't move through space freely without disrupting the gravity of any system we would want to pass close by.

PLEASE MAKE A VIDEO ON THIS: So, let’s assume you moved Solar system towards the centre of the Milky Way galaxy, the “conservation of Angular Moment” changes and the Time runs faster since its Relative. The solar system would spin faster and days and nights become shorter, since the sun is spinning itself, it would also spin faster and produce more heat and whole solar system would age faster than it should be. And it’s opposite would happen when solar system move away from the centre of the galaxy, the speed decreases and temperature would fall to a certain point. Please make a video on it

This may indeed be the answer to future interstellar exploration and solar system defense. Unless a hostile alien fleet can jump into hyperspace and show up, we can divert the whole solar system away from their rendezvous maneuver with Earth xD Or who knows, maybe we can bring the whole damn system with one jump one day, too.

1:38 so the idea of gravity kind of works, but you forgot about inertia right? Things moving (or not moving) want to keep moving (or stay not moving), so by moving the sun, wouldn't you mess up all of the objects' orbits as well? Kind of eliminates the purpose of moving you solar system out of the way of the red dwarf if your gonna get showered by space rocks anyway...

Vor 8 Monate
Alpha

It's not really going to be a problem for things in orbit, imagine holding a lasso, swinging it around above your head and start walking . If you don't move too quickly the movement of the rope will stay pretty much consistent.
