How to calculate final Approach speed

    Many get caught during their Commercial Flight Test on calculating their approach speed for their predicted landing weight (which is a mandatory question on the commercial flight test in Canada). Here I go through a sample calculation for you.

Pretty hard to find .2 knots on an analogue airspeed indicator, and frankly, even the 3 knots over 50 is not much more than a needle width. So I generally round down for numbers of 4 and under, up for 5 and over. Cheers

this is what I need! I always feel like I'm missing something when I have to depend on a computer to do all the calculations! I really want to know what is going on behind the scenes just incase I have to fly a plane completely manually without any computer assistance! Knowing the actual math is a very important safety backup, and helpful even in simple smaller aircraft! Someday I may fly a Ford Trimotor! We may never know! :P

​@Michael MacDonald my grandpa didn't have much of an education, but he could build and craft all sorts of things, he built and designed RC airplanes from scratch, and they did fly pretty nice. There was one plane he built that it looked like a simplied version of a cessna 150. He gave me that one as a gift, and when I tried to fly it it would fall out of the sky everytime I tried to make it climb steeply. and wierd thing is, I would try to turn the plane while climbing and the plane would turn the wrong direction and fall out of the sky into a tailspin. it was very wierd. He ended up having to always patch up and fix the plane. hehe But I imagine if he new the mathematics, he would've designed it better so that it wouldn't fallout fo the sky like that.

@Michael MacDonald I feel like I want to ask you this favor because you seem brilliant enough to make such a tutorial, because I really want to be able to design a plane from scratch, or derive performance statistics from any type of aircraft especially those which lack reference materials like performance charts, etc. If only there was someone willing to create a Youtube using the math to derive: 1. how much a speed decrease based on the angle of a flap for a specific aircraft 2. how much bank angle is needed to achieve a specific rate of turn. 3. what is the best angle of climb 4. what is the best rate of climb 5. wind correction angle 6. original wind direction & speed of wind derived from the H/T & Xwind Component 7. how much Power is needed to provide the desired lbs of thrust needed. 8. How much time and distance required for a plane to decelerate to a required speed. 9. Propeller/Turbine Efficiency calculations 10. Wind Chord lift and drag efficiency calculations I long for a video tutorial that would demonstrate how to calculate all these things using mathematics, but done in a way to help a layman understand the mathematics!! this would save years of advanced schooling and research to gain such understanding! But, I you are probably very busy in real life and I don't want to pressure you too much for a project like this. But if you ever do find the time, I hope you do consider trying to also derive these formulas if you ever get the chance! Thanks for your time and efforts!
