    Tesla Battery Day showed some exciting battery technology breakthroughs that will change the future of electric cars by massively scaling battery production and producing more affordable battery cells. Tesla focuses on vertical integration with a 5-step plan to cut the cost of batteries in half.
    Step 1: Cell Design. The last time Tesla released a new battery was in 2017 with their 2170 cell that started shipping in the Model 3. To move to the next step in battery cell design, Tesla needs bigger cylindrical cells because those cost less. This brings us to Tesla’s brand new biggest battery cell ever: the 4680 "tab-less" cell which brings a huge amount of improvements including: simpler manufacturing, fewer parts, and 5x reduction in electrical path. Tesla's new 4680 battery cells also have 5x the amount of energy, 16% more range, 6x the power, and faster Supercharging. These benefits are the core to what will move Tesla toward their overall mission: making their vehicles more affordable, making their vehicles travel further, and making their vehicles charge faster.
    Step 2: Cell Factory. The typical "wet" process is complicated and lengthy where powders are mixed with solvent then they have to go into a dry oven. Tesla's newer “dry” process is a much simpler process which makes the powder directly into film. This sounds great, but Elon made it clear that this is very difficult and they’re still refining the process especially to scale. The biggest benefits of dry battery electrode are a 10x footprint reduction and 10x energy reduction
    Step 3: Anode Materials. Tesla loves Silicon. It’s the most abundant element in Earth's crust after oxygen, and it stores 9x more lithium than graphite. However, Silicon expands so after many cycles it starts to crumble and gets “gooey”. To fix this, Tesla plans to design for expansion and use raw silicon then stabilize the surface through an elastic coating which will increase vehicle range by 20% and lead to cheaper electric vehicles.
    Step 4: Cathode Materials. A battery needs a stable structure to contain the ions. If there isn’t a stable structure the battery loses cycle life and degrades quickly. Cobalt is stable, but has its ethical and environmental woes. Tesla believes Nickel will solve this problem. Nickel is the cheapest metal and has the highest energy density, but Nickel needs to be stabilized. Tesla aims to maximize nickel and remove cobalt which should lead to 15% reduction in cathode cost. Tesla is also taking advantage of nickel and lithium mining for cathode production in North America. There is significant lithium in clay (enough lithium in Nevada to convert all the gasoline vehicles in the US to electric). Tesla has discovered a sustainable, environmentally friendly way of getting lithium by using table salt to extract the lithium. This new sulfate-free process has a 33% reduction in lithium cost.
    Step 5: Cell Vehicle Integration. Tesla's new vehicle architecture starts with single piece castings of high pressure die cast aluminum for the front and rear which leads to a 40% cost savings in the rear underbody and a reduction of 79 parts per car, using no heat treating or coatings. These castings will be connected to their new Structural Battery which is Tesla's first ever dual-use battery (used as an energy device and as a structure to the car). These structural batteries improve mass and range. The simpler, smaller, integrated battery + body factory of the future leads to 10% mass reduction, 14% range increase opportunity, and 370 fewer parts.
    After all steps Tesla can achieve a 56% reduction in price per kWh, vehicle range increase of 54%, and a reduction in investment per GWh of 69%. This means electric vehicle powertrains should cost less than combustion engines in the near future. They also hinted at a fully autonomous $25,000 Tesla coming in a few year. They also announced a brand new $140,000 Plaid Model S that goes 0-60 in less than 2 seconds and 1/4 mile in less than 9 seconds, with 520 miles of range.

I work on self powered items.I'll be designing self powered engines,which will run on my invention which uses no Gas,Fuels,Batteries,or Solar energies. It is a Perpetual devise,which will be turned into a vehicle motor!And other motors in many area's.I tried to get a message to Elon,butt didn't get through! He could invest in this,10 million USD. And we'll get started,his advantage is, he all ready has a few machines and mechanics running around. The bottom line is that EV's are currently at 2% global market share. The large scale manufacturers of vehicles, say that they figure they still have 45 billion vehicles to make with the 98% market share that internal combustion engines still command. My advice is to learn about engineering from engineering explained. As the host there, seems to be an engineer with a firm grasp of all facets of his subject. We must take care in re electrics. My concern is storage losses. If we charge, at no small cost, a big capacity battery, we've invested a lot of our energy resources in it. With today's tech, if we don't use it, particularly in cold weather, we run the risk of losing a certain percentage each hour. As a nation, that can really add up.

One can further reduce Tesla 4680 Tesla tabless battery Ohm losses and increase heat dissipation by tapering the electrodes in the battery's axial direction so that each electrode thickness is increased where the currents and heat flow are higher, near the continuous "tab". This tapering is one further step in the optimization of volumetric and mass energy density. The tapers of the cathode and anode rubans are matched so that the thickness of both electrodes and the electrolyte is constant as thus the roll is a cylinder. The tapper can be straight for ease of manufacturing or nonlinear to minimise RI**2 and maximize heat transfer to the "tab" or end section. The anode taper and the cathode taper need to match to keep the roll cylindrical. The tab end of each electrode rubans can further be shaped so that as the ruban is winded the ruban tab end makes contact with itself so that no tab bending is required. This creates a solid disk at each end of the roll which again provides low electrical and heat transfer resistance. The thin side of each electrode ruban may have to be enlarged to form a small wire ( ==O ) to provide mechanical strength to the anode edge and reduce electrical and mechanical stresses in the electrolyte. The thick end will have a matching indentation. One should further explore the parameter space of electrodes and electrolyte thickness in the axial direction by manufacturing and experimental testing. That may get us to the Million miles battery.

One additional point. As the the thick end of each electrode will form a solid disk, each disk can act as the battery ""top" and "bottom" disk seals. Sealant or a weld may be required on the spiral. The sealed solid disk at the thick end of each anode can then connect directly to the wiring. This reduce the number of parts, further reduces Ohms losses and reduces heat loss resistance and reduces potential failures points.

Until we separate the battery supply from the car maker, electric cars can NEVER become fully mainstream. There needs to be an international standardisation of battery size and fitment so that battery stations can replace petrol stations and batteries can be swapped-out by robots in seconds. We cannot have charging stations all over the place. In Europe a HUGE percentage of homes do not have off-road parking, we can't have charging cables draped over the pavements every few feet.

This guy really has no Idea what he’s talking about. He’s just eating up marketing hype without knowing a word of what it means. Each 4680 cell has 5.48 times the volume compared to Tesla’s 21700 cells so when Elon is referencing 5x and 6x it’s mostly because the cells take up 5.48 times more volume. ΔV = [(46^2)*80] / [(21^2)*70] = 5.48 times more volume per cell. The 4680 offers Very SMALL improvements in energy density, Specific energy, Specific power.. By reducing the cell count by almost 5.5 fold it will allow 1000’s of less solder joints and connections. They do NOT have 5 times less internal resistance when based on volume. It just has the tab removed but The cells volumetrically are 5.48 times larger so yea EACH larger cell will produce more power but there will be over 5 times less cells so it’s close to a wash. Each cell might produce 6 times the power but with 5.48 times less cells that only a 10.95% increase in power when you reduce the cell count.  The reason for 16% more range is because they can pack more Watt hours of cells in the same area. Instead of modules and banks that are separated by walls and partitions. The 4680 cells will be stacked much differently removing most of banks and modules separator walls. They will be epoxied in place for support like a giant unserviceable pack of cells with the coolant pipes that touch each cell. Overall the cells can be crammed into a smaller space allowing about 16% more capacity. This will suck for serviceability. Are there other advantages? Yes 1000’s less weld points due to less total cells. a Reduction in weight by eliminating module housings, the new chemistry is shown to degrade much slower. Tests show 1-3 million miles before significant degradation. Tests are at 8-10k Recharge 80% discharge cycles. With degradation still above 90% starting capacity after all those cycles. 10,000 80% charges on a 300 mile pack is 2,400,000 million miles. Even if a pack has a 2 million mile potential that does not mean it will last 2M miles as Li-ion cells degrade not just by usage but also just sitting on the shelf. Time and testing will let us know if these new high-nickel cathode cells will degrade with time not just with usage.

Here's the reality check...the major nickel producer in the world is in talks with Elon Musk right now to supply nickel for his batteries. Musk stipulates that part of the deal is that the nickel be mined "sustainably" ...in other words...no diesel mining equipment can be used, only battery powered equipment. So at one of the mines, where I happen to know many of the miners, they got brand new battery powered scoops, trucks and bolters. And when they went to use them, they ran out of juice and couldn't even make it down to the headings without having to be plugged in for several hours before they could do a few hours of work, before another recharge and trip back up the ramp at the end of the shift. And so they sit, abandoned , because they don't measure up to the industry's demands...or the hype. So that's the dirty secret behind your E.V. fantasy world...in reality it's not possible without fossil fuels. And to say that "they will eventually solve this problem" is just another variation of the falsehood that "science will eventually solve every problem".

I would be curious to know what the total energy balance for these batteries is. Beginning from digging the minerals from the earth to manufacturing them to how much benefit is received over the life of the battery. Without that study one cannot compare benefits of this technology with other traditional methods of energy productions. And eventually all these wonderful batteries have to be charged with some form of electrical generation.

Batteries must be as easy to charge as easy as it is to fill a gas tank. A battery must take you as far as a gas of tank will 600 miles or more. It needs to be cheaper then gas and needs to maintain 80% capacity for at least 200k miles or ten years. Until then your wasting our time and money.

Wesley, you did not address from where the energy is to come to put in the batteries. Will people have to choose between heating/cooling their homes or charging their cars? There's not enough power plants in this country to supply electricity for domestic consumption AND transportation.

In short no revolution at all - just little enchantments to both cost and few percent more capacity per kg. No new chemistry or some enchantments - same old tech just a bit more "refined". Battery always has been a structural element - same as glass in car windows is. Tesla as usual hypes a lot but is very low on actual substance. A real revolution would be for example explosion proof batteries - currently under development. They would allow driving an electric truck off road without worrying about dying every other minute. Better chemistry that would double or triple current battery storage per kg - or even move it into gasoline energy storage range!

I work within the US Power Industry. I love Tesla and the idea of everyone having an electric car... But I'm sadden to tell you all that America literally cant handle the power requirements. The power infrastructure in 80% of the country is crumbling and decaying at an alarming rate. Even if a quarter of the population were all charging simultaneously, the power draw would literally crash the system. They already have issues keeping everyone powered up when everyones A/C kicks on in the summer months..

As someone who takes a long time to accept new technology, hey, let me press stop on my cassette player for a minute. Need to get the cotton bud to clean the tape head, its warbling a bit, I must admit the future looks exciting for electric cars with the advances they are making in the industry in such a short time. Like many others I am a big petrol fan, and I even like the bigger diesels because they sound great but I can see a day when I say goodbye to the combustion engine. Sad in a way but progress must happen in order to make the world a better place for future generations. A world with no pollution from any forms of transport, although not sure about planes yet but its only a matter of time before they become electric as well. Biggest problem will be ships and how to replace the massive diesel engines. An EV is not for me yet because of the obvious issues but Its a step in the right direction.

Affordable EV with short charging time and long-range would be quite possible to imagine. Many things were not just a few years ago but here they are. Wondering what Saudi Arabia and other oil depending countries will do. If they manage to pull this by 2022-2023 it will have a massive impact on the planet in so many ways.

I think the Battery Day presentation went over the average investor's head, judging from the swoon in the stock price in the days following. It also showed that, much like the computer industry, the cars that Tesla is producing now will be significantly obsoleted by the new battery technology to become available in 1-3 years. This explanation added more clarity to the long range vision of Musk and Team, and for me is a good justification for staying invested in the stock for the long haul -- 10 years or more.

If you reduce demands on vehicle power, effectively making them slower, you gain massively on range. I dont understand why it is interesting having vehicles accelerating to max velocity within 2 seconds. Thats not within the green planet thinking, but brainless competition thinking.
