Red Bull don't just make energy drinks and sponsor crazy extreme sports. They also run a global soccer empire spread across three continents. DW reporter and New York soccer fan Dave Braneck visits Red Bull's teams in NY and Leipzig to see what that means for fans and the sport itself.

A company owning a team is just too far? So much for Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg... in that sense, I also don't understand the hate Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig are getting in Germany, other than sheer hypocrisy. But anyway, I've been drifting off. Red Bull might not give any information about their marketing (which makes sense, it's their secret of the chef, after all), but whatever it is they get involved in (football, Formula 1, extreme sports), they're generally fairly successful in what they do. Not even necessarily in winning the silverware, but at least in football definitely to make money by investing in young talents to sell them with significant profits. So maybe Red Bull doesn't need all of these football clubs in order to sell their energy drinks, just like Coca Cola and McDonald's don't need to advertise as much as they're doing to sell their products, but it sure helps to stay in the picture. After all; getting customers is one thing, keeping your customers with you is a whole different ball game.

The main problem for buying a club in Germany is the 50+1 rule. That means that you can't buy a professional team, the members have to keep 50+1 parts of the club so they are always the majority

Answer a dumb question in a simple way , because it was never a club . Just because you put fc after a company doesn’t make it a club . Manchester United was once a club . Now a company . Simple as that clubs are made of members

I share a lot of this sentiment. I'd love to support a different club that truly represents my community but without pro/rel the lower division clubs that sell much cheaper tickets aren't all that attractive to me. I want to support a club that can win the top domestic trophy, and lower division clubs in the US only have access to the US Open Cup. The current format doesn't lend itself to taking the lower divisions seriously either.

Honestly, I would have been delighted if Red Bull had taken over Bolton when we almost went out of business last year. Changing the name would have been rough, but Bolton Wanderers is reasonably well know, they may have gone with Bolton Wanderers RB. We already play in white, and they have enough blue in their logo they might have kept the trim blue. Being in the pyramid that has the Premier League at the top there's a decent chance that we would have been prioritised over Leipzig. Shady ownership is way less controversial in England.

I don't get it! New york metro stars was founded on 94,achieved nothing, and now has a stadium with fans, leipzig had only 18 fans according to polsen when they started! So everything has improved! People hate them because they have spent 100 million dollars and made a team which is first in bundesliga, other teams spend that much money to buy 1 player!

This whole discussion about the 50+1 Rule is so useless and hypocritical. Every club can make the decision to adhere to it or not. I think Hertha BSC chose to work together with an investor as well. What makes RB unique is that they do not spend hundreds of millions to buy some players like Chelsea or Man city did ( and clubs like Real Madrid, PSG or Barca still do) but develop young talents. There is reason why "little" Red Bull Salzburg made over a 100 million Euros profit in the last years by developing players like Mane, Keita and Minamino ( all now Liverpool), Sabitzer, Heidara, Gulasci and Ilsanker (all Leipzig), Haland (now Dortmund), Lainer (now Mönchengladbach) and so on. The list is long. RB scouting is 1A. Also RB has an upper limit what they pay to players per year. So the concept behind all this is quite sound. And please do not tell me that Signal Iduna or Allianz (both insurance companies, by the way) provide their names for wanting nothing in return......

Sorry, but, what is more traditional is that Americans bet on football teams, they don't support them. So, keep your nostalgia, but get with the program, dude. Or, go live in Canada. If you want to really feel disenfranchised and put out then become a NY Red Bulls fan and have a drink with a NY Metro hipster snob who says they used to be so much more authentic. What happened to you and your boys is nothing compared with old school Man. City supporters. So, try not to be such a douche to the young NY Red Bulls fans. BTW. it's football.

The thing that no one talks about is that Red Bull couldn’t have changed up the club if they bought a Bundesliga team. They had to buy one in a lower division thanks to the 50+1 rule which stops owners from changing the club drastically.

That freaking stadium is in NJ Harrison, i live in the town next to It and is a hell when there are games or events. They build it and did not improved the roads or access to the highways, besides all the people fleeing NYC to live in the dozens of apartments being build around it, which increases the number of cars.

Red Bull missed a trick in Brazil. Instead of Sao Paolo where there are many big established football teams, they should have formed a team in the capital city, Brasilia. There's already a big stadium thanks to the 2014 World Cup and the potential is there to grow football in a surprisingly non-fanatic football city of Brazil.

Vor 4 Monate

Red Bull realized this, the old team was in the city of Campinas (São Paulo) that has two great fans of the teams of the second division Guarani (champion of the first division in 1978) and Ponte Preta, in addition to the fans of the teams of the first division of the state , Santos, Corinthians, Palmeiras and São Paulo. Last year Red Bull ended this team and bought a team from another city in the interior of São Paulo that plays in the Second Division (Bragantino de Brangança). Today the team is a surprise, a team that was stranded years in the Second Division was champion with rounds in advance and will play the First Division in decades. The crowd did not seem angry with the new club, joined it, they just did not like having changed the shield a little, but unlike reports from other countries it does not seem that it went wrong in this regard.
