@Niaer there is a difference in MOST hispanic dialects. I know argentinians give it no difference but it sure as hell sounds different in carribbean dialects. Mexicans pronounce the ll with a y sound. Panamians with a y and j sound smashed together and argentinians with a shj sound. Spaniards speak with a lisp. For you to sit there and say there is no difference is misleading.

Vor 12 Tage
Susanne Eby

@Ginés de Pasamonte theyre not. Puerto ricans pronounce R like an L. Carribbeans straight up drop syllables. V and B is a different sound in many spanish dialects. My mothers dialect pronounces the ll more like a cross between a "y and j" sound whereas i hear mexicans sound it out more like a full y sound and argentinians give it a SHj sound. All these so called "Spanish" claiming it is the same sound makes me think you all live in a rock and never speak to any hispanic beyond your goat village. But seriously most hispanic dialects distinguish it. Are you argentinian or something. I know they dont.

@Chiara Ordoñez no, spanish language rules say there is absolutely no difference between the pronunciation of both. dont get me wrong. i absolutely love pronouncing them differently, i find that the language is richer and more beautiful that way, but that doesnt change spanish rules. in every single spanish dialect you do not pronounce v and b differently, however, in some places they do because of the influence of languages that do. like catalan, english, or some native american languages. the conclusion is you do what you believe is better, cause that is the way languages evolve and trascend. but it is written on the rules you pronounce them exactly the same

To put it another way, Let us remove Foreign words from the discussion. They are not really portuguese. We'll start with the English words. Well, we can go back to a time when English wasn't so important. Say 1850 for arguments sake. We find there are lots of French words that are being used, so we take them out since they are not "legitimate". They are not "from Portuguese". So what's next? We need to take out a lot of words that come from Tupi, Yoruba, etc... Then maybe a few that come from Dutch, Spanish, English. We're drifting back to a Portuguese lexicon maybe circa 1400 without all these foreign influences. Except there are lots of Latin and Greek words that educated people have added to the "real portuguese" lexicon. So we take them out. Do we have "real portuguese" yet? No. We have to take all the Arabic words out. They come from Arabic, not Portuguese. And some of those Arabic words don't "come from" Arabic actually. They come from Persian etc... Ok. Now we have Portuguese that comes from Portuguese speakers right? Well, we have gone so far back it might be better to say we've got a variety of late Latin ,or proto-romance, but maybe. Except we should remove some Germanic words from Visigothic etc... And now we should remove all the Greek words. They don't "come from" latin. (There's a lot of Greek words.). Maybe we should take the opportunity to remove some Punic words, and a few from various Celtic languages etc... So now we're looking at Latin before any major Greek influence. Maybe a bit before 300 BC? Maybe a bit earlier than that? Our quest to find Portuguese words that come from Portuguese is running into some problems. The lusitani who live in what is now Portugal probably don't know that this language exists. But maybe we're getting close to the end? Now we just have to take out some Etruscan words and some Celtic words. We have a small problem now, because it's difficult to find inscriptions, so we can't be certain what the language looked like. But probably we need to take out some words from Oscan and Faliscan etc... We're probably getting close to a point where we can stop talking about "Latin" and start talking about "proto-italic". Unfortunately, we are really running out of inscriptions etc... But we can reconstruct things based on later languages. We *think* that there were a lot of different varieties of proto-italic that were in contact with each other. Possibly there was some kind of sprachbund. So it is probable that we need to remove some loanwords. Also we are pretty sure there was a *lot* of proto-Celtic influence. So we will have to remove a lot more Celtic words. And, well, we can reconstruct things and move back to some western variety of proto-indo-european, and maybe speculate about what possible loanwords might have come from other languages, but it's getting very difficult and complicated now. I think maybe we have reached a point where we should accept that finding the "original" Portuguese that "comes from" Portuguese is difficult. Or maybe even impossible?

Vor Stunde
eldric grubbidge
eldric grubbidge

@Sarah no Word in Portuguese is "from Portuguese speakers". Or at least very few are. They are *from* late Latin speakers, Arabic speakers, Greek speakers, French speakers, Tupi speakers etc... In the case of Latin, which is the origin of the biggest share of the Portuguese lexicon, we find that it had already incorporated a lot of Greek words, and adopted a new letter, "y" to spell them. So there is no escaping loanwords. The question isn't where these words come from, but where are they now. Do Portuguese speakers use them? When speaking Portuguese? Do less educated monolingual Portuguese speakers use them? In my experience the answer is yes. Which makes them part of the Portuguese lexicon. And legitimately Portuguese words. Just as much as any other loanword in Portuguese.

For anyone curious in some linguistics in latin there is no W instead V makes the sound that W does in english. And V was used as W as well. So V evolved into V U and W. From latin. Very cool.

Vor 7 Tage
J.C.L. Eagan
J.C.L. Eagan

Fun fact; w as a letter actually is two u’s and v’s combined. See in Latin, v and u were the same letter, v. This v was pronounced as u between consonants, and as w before vowels. Over time the w pronunciation become v in Latin and it’s descendants. So v was pronounced as oo in pool and v as in veal. The Germanic languages meanwhile, still had a w sound, and to write it, they placed two v’s together.

Yes, In persian and urdo the V and U are the same letter. Which is و. Recently, they add a new letter for the v, which is ڤ, but nobody use it, I can't even write it by the keybord, so I copy and paste it. This similarity effected the Hebrew Launguage as well, since most of them are Khazars. In Hebrew they used ו for U and בֿ for V (not בּ‎ wich is B). However, Khazars used the u and v as the same letter, which made V in Hebrew names that are originally not V but U, like in "David", which written like this דוד (DUD) in Hebrew, but pronounced the way you know. While in Arabic they don't use the V anyway, so they still call the name as it used to be: Dawood (داود / DAUD).

It is actually called a "double u" for a very valid reason. In Old English we dropped the runic alphabet and converted to the Latin alphabet instead. We originally had the letter "wynn" which was based off of a rune of the same name because Latin did not have a letter to make the "w" sound (One of two runic based letters at the time, both of which have since been discarded. Thorn [Þ þ] is the other; Thorn ia actually still used in the Icelandic alphabet.) Wynn was then replaced by "uu". Very slowly over a long period of time this "uu" merged, first being written with the tails crossing and then finally being formed into a seperate letter entirely but it never recieved a new name. It is still named after it's origin of "uu".

En realidad en español la diferencia entre la pronunciación de V y B es inexistente, la diferencia de pronunciación depende de dónde se ubica la letra en la palabra, no por la letra con la que se escribe. Para investigar más sobre esto, recomiendo el canal de Liguriosa. In fact, the difference in pronunciation between V and B doesn't exist. The pronunciation is based in where the letter is located, not in what letter that's spelled. To know more about this, I recommend the YouTube channel called "Linguriosa", it's in Spanish but I think has subtitles. In realtà la differenza nella pronuncia delle lettere V e B in spagnolo non esiste. La pronuncia depende della posizione della lettera nella parola, non della lettera con la che è scritta la parola. Actually there’s a misunderstanding with the spanish one. It’s not that we call it “double u-v”, it’s just that in Spain we refer to the “v” letter as “uve” and to “b” as “be”, whereas in the other spanish speaking countries they refer to these letters as “ve” and “be” respectively (yea the difference in sound is very little) , so we actually say it like the french

The history of the W starts with it actually being double V, English named it appropriately, but it was both two hard to draw and say, so people started to draw it with rounded points and named it the double-u

@Ivy Rose Most of the writing and reading studies I found while researching the whole myth that video games cause eye problems. (They don't by the way, all evidence shows that that actually greatly improve target acquisition and hand eye coordination.) The rest is just what recorded history says about the letter's origin.

@Ignemuton This isn't entirely true either. Most of what you said is pure speculation that cannot be proven. As is the case with most things pertaining to the origin ns of a word or letter. We don't know the exact story, but your side is no more right than what the original person said.

Vor 18 Tage
Ignemuton
Ignemuton

This is actually not entirely correct. You see originally U and V werent distinct, you could write either of them and it could make either U, W or V sound depending on its location in the word in latin. However during the early medieval period the sounds /w/ (which was spelled as V) and the sound /b/ (which was spelled as B) transformed both into /β/ (very similar to the modern day v in the word "*v*ery") Because now germanic speakers had no symbol to represent the sound /w/. In order to represent said sound they wrote VV or UU (remember the two shapes were not distinct yet), because of this writers of old high german and old english called the digraph uu "double u". However the english made their own symbol for it (wynn ƿ which derrived from nordic runes) Eventually when the normans who spoke french invaded them, they reintroduced the idea of the "doube u" (uu). Whether it was VV or UU changed depending on the font but eventually by the 14th century it would be considered its own separate letter. In middle high german the sound /w/ eventually became the same sound as modern V which is why they use W to represent V.

@Ceridwynn Haven Drawing sharp edges puts way more strain on your wrist and other joints than drawing soft edges. Historically, people had to write everything down by hand. They didn't have modern keyboards. So writing sharply curved letters all day would lead to permanent wrist damage over time. Same happens with reading. Reading sharp jagged letters strains the eyes way more than reading soft letters. Our bodies are not built for sharp mechanical movements.

In German, this letter (w) is called "ve" like you'd pronounce the beginning of the word "vélo" (bike) in French. For learners of English it's always a bit confusing because what we know as a "w" is in English a "v". The letter "v" is called "fau" and is sometimes pronounced like a "f" (Vater - father, Vogel - bird) and sometimes like a v (Vase - vase, Vanille - vanilla). Edit: Someone corrected my example, I've changed it. ;)

@Ruby Bailor Kein Problem. Did you know that in modern Germany you can easily get around with speaking English? But it depends on the region and what person you're talking to. It's just not like in France or some other European countries where they don't want to speak anything other than French. Most young people here even use English very often as a kind of bonus to German.
