How Hidden Technology Transformed Bowling

Bowling has been reinvented many times over the past seven thousand years but especially in the last 30. This is the fascinating physics of balls, oil, lane and pins. A portion of this video was sponsored by Salesforce. Go to salesforce.com/veritasium to learn more.

I think bowling has changed quite a bit in the last couple decades. I remember watching the big crankers and power stokers back in the 80's like Pete Weber who had the sweeping, hang-on gutter hooks using the splint-like wrist wraps. I've just started watching a bit more and there seems to be a lot more straight ball, and moderate hooks rather than the old cranking I remember.

Everything I know about bowling since childhood is now voided. I thought balls are just heavy balls with holes for fingers and the floor is just shiny because of floor wax. This video gave me a whole new perspective. I'm also curious about that 3000 bowling balls manufactured everyday, what are the players do after a game are they eating it? 🤣🤣🤣

I always thought you just had to roll it straight and as fast as possible to knock all the pins. All the people throwing the curve balls I thought were just trying to be cool or extra.

I'm still not going to pretend bowling is a complicated sport lol everything on planet earth is complicated when you break it down. Bowlers only roll a ball and add spin using muscle memory. Make each lane different with diagrams showing random oil placement, and different weighted/surfaced balls.

My first 300 was with a Brunswick T2 my second was with a Storm El Nino Both still ABC everything after was USBC but I've got 298s 299s 300s and a 799 and 853 series for 3 games and my high series for 4 games at age 17 in 1994 was 968 scratch throwing a Turbo X where we bowled 2 games then move a pair and bowl 2 more. Pete Been Beast since frame 1 game 1 perfect 300 out the gate won one hundred bucks and sealed his destiny and fate! The guy is nothing less then GREAT! His pops was special to so I'm sure that it's the case that right off from the jump made Pete step up and elevate! Chris Barns is a machine that's why he beat the machine! His wife Linda can pitch the rock and kick ass as well! Great video. Now go in depth on the pinsetters AMF 82/30s 82/70s 82/90s 90 XLs 8800 Golds Brunswick As the A2s with jetbacks they now have one that sure looks like a Marrige of both machines then there is the Mendez machines... You can skip that part. Then the pins are Brunswick AMF Am flight 2s and then Twister but they are not used much anywhere THE AmFlights 2s are the best.

How do bowling ball manufacturers stay in business? They are kinda hard to lose and nearly indestructable so don't really wear out. I didn't think there were that many hydraulic press channels crushing them for videos or explosives channels blowing them up.

Vor Tag
Hauptmann6
Hauptmann6

They do wear out. The covers absorb oil and after a while they don't react correctly. A normal league bowler can get several seasons out of a ball. Better bowlers get less as they notice the change sooner. The cover can also chip. Chips are bad.
