Dear friends and followers, in today's video I`ll be explaining a few thumb rules to make your descent planning a lot easier. Initiating the descent at the right moment is one the things/procedures most flight students and even experienced pilots struggle with from time to time. Nowadays airliners are equipped with all sorts of helpful tools showing you when to start your descent but this systems still can´t anticipate the mood of the air traffic controller, which can always interfere with your descent.

So watch the video and look out for some great and helpful thumb rules which will make your descent planning a lot easier.

Thank you very much for your time! I hope you enjoy this basic introduction about descent planning!
    Wishing you all the best!

    Your "Captain" Joe

Should I assume that when you say "thump rule" you're referring to a "rule of thumb"?

A better way is the 36 rule. 3 x alt to lose or 3x27 =81 so you start at at 81 miles out. 6x your groundspeed ( not indicated) = rate of descent so 300 over the ground x 6= 1800 ft/min. 36 rule works everytime.

Descent is dictated by the plan/need to get to pattern altitude on the approach. But you can't just go down...you have to still avoid terrain, stay on your assigned heading, avoid other aircraft, airspace restrictions, distance from the airfield (and what altitude you start your descent from) and avoid going down too fast putting stresses on the aircraft and pickup up too much speed. Pilots learn tricks/shortcunts for calculating cross-winds, cloud bottoms, holding patterns, density altitude (performance measure), and landing distances...here is one for calculating how to descend: Start with altitude above target field (airport) elevation and multiply by three. This gives distance in nautical miles from the airport to start a 500-foot-per-minute descent to reach pattern altitude.

Altitude minus field elevation (actual amount of air you need to descend through) times 3... ie... 35,000 feet, landing Denver (5,000 feet) means 30,000 needed to descend, times 3 ='s 90 miles. Quick and dirty... now, add speed restrictions and a ton of other things...

Comment posted in 2030 for suborbital airliners. "Excuse me, Captain Joe, but I do not understand what you are talking about when you mention the exgirlfriend detour. I am using Delta Azimuth of 5 degrees during Entry Interface while keeping AoA and I do not see how descent can be fun for passengers." Reply from Captain Joe "This video was made for legacy airliners from 2020s decade, use OTT for TAEM which provides an overhead approach in addition to a straight in approach. Start at mach 2.5 at 85000 feet altitude. Or you may use GRTLS guidance system starting at mach 3.2. I was not referring to Entry Interface, I was talking about NEP and MEP points that will determine which HAC approach you will use. Basically my video says that if you do not plan ahead it is the equivalent of flying like having NEP HAC while flying over MEP point. You will have plenty of energy on final approach, and ATC and other pilots will see you are a fish out of the water, basically that you entered TAEM without the Energy Management part of the acronym". Reply from 2030 "Thank you for your kind response Captain Joe. Your reply is quite enlightening. It is very educational to learn about ancient history of aviation"

Has anyone here flown Volaris before (Mexican airliner)? I think their pilots have a very wicked descend and on landing I feel their touch down is at a much faster speed and rough compared to other airlines I've flown before (with similar aircraft, Airbus 320). Would love to hear your thoughts if you've ever flown them.

Simple version is altitude/1000 * 3. Example, 35,000 feet / 1000 * 3 = 105 miles. Of course, other factors can complicate this decision.

Joe, I think your altitude calculation is slightly wrong. So for every 1000 ft you lose, you would go 3 nm forward. So it will be in a 1000 ft: 3nm ratio. 27,000 ft = 27000/1000*3 = 81nm

Very good but 270 is 90 that’s ok And 10 miles for desaceleration Fine On the descend always you.distance by 3 70 x 3 = 210 , and the desacelelsrstion and go on Only 1 think You don’t need to know the the tail or head wing . Because this is rule of 3 Your ground speed is divided by 2 If you start the the descending with a Ground speed of 400 kts, your rate of descent is 2000 ft/ mint If you have tail wind , at any moment, you will have for example now 450 kts Now your rate of descents is 2250. Joe that’s the reason of the bracket on the 320 to compensate this. I hope is clear Thanks

7 degree slope is the safest way to start descent. So calculate the distance to runaway/Airport from where you are and decide to glide at 7 degree slope and lo behold you are at the airport of all other conditions apply.
